  • A quick video on steps to remove the "shutter squeak" on a Canon AE-1 Program (or similar) model. The "shutter squeak" is actually the mirror return and brass parts rubbing together. This noise does not effect shutter speeds. Perform this service at your own risk.

Wow. This video helped me remedy the shutter squeak issue on a Canon AE-1P I got off eBay in 5 minutes. I did it with removing the bottom cover method. Super to the point and easy to follow video. Thanks!!

It is the best video to solve the AE1 Program squeak problem. I used high quality sewing machine oil and after the third shot the shutter noise disappeared. It sounds like new. Thank you very much for this contribution.

You probably don't want to use sewing machine oil either because of the plastic gears inside the camera that have already been deteriorating with age. Liberty makes a 100% synthetic oil thats safe on plastics. Otherwise any silicon based oil should be safe.

I just picked one up at a flea market yesterday for $85 with the 50mm lens. I bought a battery and some film today and tested it. It does have that squeal. The only other thing I noticed was what looks like foam hanging down around the program in the front side of the camera when I took the lens off. It looks like it has deteriorated just a little. When I look at the prism I see a slit between it and the front of the camera. I'm not sure if this is normal. When the mirror clips up it may cover that anyway. The lens looks like it's in great shape and the camera isn't too bad. I think it's just need a thorough cleaning. It has a little dust in the crevices from sitting in the store.

  • @kmoecub
    @kmoecub 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I prefer to use a silicon based dry-film lubricant. Usually it's sold in spray cans, so get a syringe from a farm store, spray some of the lubricant into a small container, and then fill the syringe with just a little more lubricant than you need. It won't attract dust like oil does.

Which is precisely why nobody should be following “tutorials” like this, and perhaps more importantly, why nobody should be making “tutorials” like this in the first place. I had a customer bring one into me after they watched this video and tried doing this. There was oil everywhere 🤦🏼‍♂️
They told me that they followed a video tutorial on how to properly lubricate the shutter and I asked them to show me. This is far from proper. It’s not even the shutter that causes the infamous squeal in these cameras anyways, it is one small bearing. Dripping oil into the camera and praying you get it where it needs to go is not something anyone should ever consider doing.

*”do you offer lubricating services for the squeak?”*
      - I offer proper servicing. That is a far more involved matter than simply placing a drop of lubricant. Consider for a moment that this notorious issue is caused by a dry bearing which had once been correctly lubricated. Where do you imagine that lubricant has gone? The answer is that it has broken down over time, just as it has throughout the rest of the camera more likely as not. This usually means that there are gummy deposits of lubricant additives, combined with decades of dirt/grime which have to first be cleaned away prior to applying fresh lubricant. It is a tedious but very important step in the proper maintenance of the camera, ensuring reliable mechanical functionality for many more decades to come. When someone brings one of these into me asking for the squeal to be fixed, I disassemble, meticulously clean the mechanisms and re-lubricate all points requiring it with the correct lubricants to ensure longevity. The nice thing about modern lubricants is that they tend to perform for longer than those used when these were manufactured, so a single service - with proper care and storage of the camera - can ensure a very long life of the mechanical components.
*”I’m looking for somewhere I can take my camera in”*
      - In which part of the world are you located? I run a small repair business in Central Alberta, Canada, so unless you are in the same area I don’t know how much I can help in terms of performing the service myself. Unfortunately this is a dying trade, so finding a local repairman can sometimes be difficult. I know others in the trade, in other parts of the country, that I could certainly refer you to though, if you are located elsewhere in Canada.

Please don’t do that ! You have more chance to ruin your camera on the long term than to repair it !!
you either take it to a professional to end the squeaky noise, or you take it to get rid of all the excess oil that ended in every part of your camera, resulting in a short circuit most the time, and to stop the squeaky noise… one is repair cost more than the other… i’ll let you guess.
I’ve repaired dozens and dozens of ae-1, a-1 and ae-1 P that came dead or with lubricant all over the viewfinder or in the mirror box, because they “tried the tutorial on TH-cam for the squeak”

For the love of cameras, please stop doing this! The mechanisms inside of these old film SLRs really do need to be *properly* cleaned, functioned and lubricated with the *correct* type and amount of lubricant. This *always* requires a proper disassembly and thorough understanding of the mechanics inside. What you’ve demonstrated here is the kind of nightmare DIY “repair” which will inevitably render the camera inoperable eventually, just take it into someone competent in photographic equipment service and repairs. Practices like this will almost certainly serve only to reduce the total number of these cameras in use, not the other way around. If you wish to do this with your own personal property then so be it. But please stop leading others to believe that this is an acceptable practice, especially without so much as warning them of the many and highly probable consequences they may have to face when doing this to their own camera.

*”Maybe some people don’t want to pay the price of the camera to lube a shutter.”*
      - Maybe those people should stick to non-mechanical cameras if a $50 CLA is out of the question? 🤷🏼‍♂️
Also, you just supported my entire argument here, probably without even realizing it lol. The squeal in these specific cameras isn’t coming from “the shutter”. If that fact has escaped you then you really have no business opening one of these up, to be honest.
The squeal is caused by a dry mirror governor flywheel bearing. Sure, you might successfully get some (incorrect) lubricant onto that bearing by doing this. But you’re also going to get it all over the side of the mirror box - inside the mirror box most likely - as well as several other components in the mirror mechanism which will only cause problems later on. And that’s the best case scenario.
These are *mechanical* cameras, and as such require maintenance just as any mechanical system inevitably will. It is my opinion that these cameras are far better off being left to collect dust if you can’t or won’t pay to give them the care and attention that they need, because what is out there is literally all there is , they don’t even manufacture parts for these anymore.
      *”Chill out.”*

That is where you will find someone to give it the proper maintenance required.
*”Rather than just saying this is incorrect, provide the correct method.”*
      - If my memory serves, I believe I paid somewhere on the order of $80 for the A1 service & repair manuals back in the day. That knowledge isn’t free. If you’re asking me to layout the entire procedure here then I might possibly be so inclined, though I doubt you’d benefit much from me describing the correct procedure unless you have a working knowledge of camera servicing and repairs, as well as the required tools to perform the job.
