The reason why the funerals go for 3 days is to give the living enough time to mourn . Spirits stay behind and can’t cross over is because the family’s won’t let them go . So people from all around nz stay respects to show the spirit how loved it is to make its Journey in to the after life easier . And yea you can still drink spring water . Everything on these movies are dead true . Our culture is so deep it’s actually scary the deeper you dive in to our customs and beliefs .

Jake loves his kids and really does care. But the relationships are just so broken. He is just so broken also he needs to be pushed in the right direction and meeting those two guys after the funeral put him on the right track. His character arch is just so awesome.

I just realized I've never seen the second movie
It's weird cause these movies never bothered me much until I was in an extremely violent relationship
Even though growing up my dad was exactly like this to the point my dad burnt our house down thinking we were in it kidnapped me and my brother and then stole our dog mistreated him then dropped him back off in a horrible state
But once I was the one being abused it was different
4 years ago I was in a relationship for 4 months
In that 4 months my ex held me hostage messed my mind up so bad convinced everyone I knew that I was in jail beat the crap out of me to the extent his own dad had to rescue me I had 2 black eyes all my front teeth busted out my nose was "deformed due to abuse" it was on the other side of my face my whole body was covered in bruises of different colors
I never thought me of all people would end up in that position
His dad was amazing to me he wasn't a great man in the past but he knew that because I was a good woman to his son that his son wasn't going to let me leave unless i left in a body bag
The night his dad took me to the woman's refuge his son was cracked out going through psychosis and was telling his dad exactly what he was going to do to me before he killed me his dad thought he was bullshitting the last time he said what he was going to do to me until he saw me that night he wasn't about to let him kill me
I feel awful that he had to choose between me and his own son but I'm thankful every single day I'm safe I worked through all the damage over the last 4 years and as much as I am scared of my ex he showed me what strength I really have
He use to have a tattoo that said "battle tested" I think out of the two of us I was the one who was battle tested I lived through hell and survived ive had a lot of cosmetic stuff done to look like i use too but it doesn't fix trust even after working through the psychological stuff somethings will stay forever
there is a lot of really sad truths in NZ one is i have worked with a lot of females in the adult entertainment industry the veterinary industry and event management and i have not met one woman who hasn't been SA'ed or in a violent relationship its something that is very hidden here women will openly talk about it in private with each other but for some reason we still live in a culture where women get revictimized over and over (btw i know men get abused too but im talking only from personal experience)
when you said too you wouldn't leave your daughter with no grown men i tell ya what im like that with my daughter i even have a nanny cam in my daughters room so if im asleep i know if anyone goes in her room again that's the lack of trust and being hyper aware after trauma

Bro! I watched your reactions to both Once were warriors and What becomes of the Broken Hearted. Thank you for sharing your insight to both these movies. I think you reacted with such honesty and humility and all your comments were expressed with respect to our culture. I feel you are very intelligent guy. Your emotional intelligence on the other hand is probably a reflection of your morals and an abundance of integrity Im sure. I love sharing my culture and I love that these movies provoked your emotions that you were kind enough to share with us.
If you are ever in NZ I would personally love to show you the other side of some of the beautiful things our culture has to offer. These movies are not an accurate representation of our culture, however this kind of stuff exists in parts of our lower socio economic societies.
    Once again thanks for sharing..

There's two main reasons they look so grimey and gritty is proximity to poverty, because even though they control the drug markets most of the money made gets spent on alcohol, cars, bikes, and guns, and the fact they model themselves after motorcycle gangs like the Hells Angels that carry a savage and feral aesthetic and codes of behaviour. That's changed a bit over time, but that was the way for quite some time and likely still is for some of the older heads.

We messed up the water in that 20yrs :-( Maybe you can still if it comes down from the snow mountains. i see people do it. if there was worms and parasites in the water no one would!!! EVER! ewww. Drinking the stream water whilst out tramping in the South Island is usually fine, though you have to know how the water is flowing etc. I would never attempt to drink water in the North Island unless I was about to die of thirst. Too much farm land so I don't trust it. Pig hunting (and hunting in general) is pretty common I'd say. There are a lot of cases where you need to grab it by the head and use a knife.

Why should you continue to be gangsta if you already have jewelry, cars, nice clothes and shit. You are gangsta because that's your last choice bruh, because you have nothing, you are poor to begin with.
If you are smart able to get nice cars, clothes and stuff, you are also able to get a job and stop being a gangsta. Pay some respect to the community not raping it

Im Australian. When we camp next to a freshwater river? YES we also boil that water and drink it. I even use it in my solar camp shower. When riding motos we also pull up at rivers and get a drink strait up and dump our heads under. Lie?? This is Australia young man and Nz is the same. Australia is the oldest land on earth brother. What plumbing do you think the native aboriginals use today lol and while I get that water. I check my crayfish nets. Freshwater crayfish for lunch. Australia 🙌 we ain't no joke. Nz are some of the most genuine humans there is. They live and breath hunting. Think a drink from a river worries them/us 😆
