Top 10 Longest NON-RPG NES Games!

  • In a previous episode, I covered the longest NES games, in fact it's my highest viewed episode, at almost 90K views. But one of the common complaints about it, was that it was dominated by RPGs, and that was the unfortunate nature of the beast. I was asked to work on a video that omitted those, and from that we have a wonderful episode dedicated to the LONGEST, non-rpg games on the platform!

You know you are getting older when you start to hit the simulate games button until you get to the playoffs. I had Bases Loaded II. I think the furthest I ever made it into a season before I got bored was about 40 games. Pretty sure I was playing as Utah. They had a lot of pitchers with funky deliveries, sidearmers and stuff, so it made them a little more fun to use.
Some of the longest games I remember playing:
Solar Jetman - The world record speedrun for clearing all 12 levels of this game is about 53 minutes, which feels inconceivable to me; between the brutal difficulty and the nasty physics engine I can remember spending well over an hour just trying to clear a single level, and that’s without having to continue because of losing all my lives.
Ring King - Now this game doesn’t have a clear-cut ending, but if you set the parameters for beating the game at “training your boxer all the way up to 99 skill points and becoming world champion” then it’s going to take a long, long time to hit both of those goals. You have to win anywhere from 3-5 training bouts per skilll point that you earn, plus fighting your way up the championship ladder, so even if you go totally undefeated you still have to fight hundreds of boxing matches to hit both of those goals. I owned this game and got my boxer built up pretty high, but not all the way to “completion.”
Rampage - One time when I borrowed this game (can’t remember if it was a rental or if I borrowed it from a friend) I decided that I was going to complete all 128 days. I don’t even know how long it actually took. I wasn’t timing myself. I just know that it felt like it dragged on interminably for hours on end. I was so bored by the time I finally cleared the last stage that I didn’t even celebrate; just watched it loop back to stage 1 and shut the console off with a feeling of relief.

I never played more than 1 game at a time in Pennant mode in the original Bases Loaded, but to this day it’s still my favorite baseball game. Sure the fielding is bad like most NES baseball games, but better than many others. The heart of the game is pitching and hitting, I love the control you have over pitches and you can learn what pitches the ump will call as a strike even if they are WAY off the plate. The key is any pitch you throw whose shadow passes over the plate no matter how high or low will be called a strike

Do you consider The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link RPGs? Without a guide or knowing where to go next and what you are doing, those games are very long. Same with Blaster Master and Rygar. If you don't know where to go in those games you're in for a long ride. Plus, there are no saves or passwords in Rygar and Blaster Master so if you're not comfortable leaving your NES on for hours and hours, you have to go through the whole game again in one sitting to get back to where you were. Bionic Commando is another one like Rygar and Blaster Master. I agree with @AgdaFingers we need a Non-RPG, Non-Battle, Non-Sports longest NES games list.

The only game I can think of that wasn't on this list is Metroid. The game itself was spectacular, but I personally am not big on exploration games.
I'm a huge baseball fan and I played every one of the Bases Loaded games back in the day. My preference was Bases Loaded 3 because of how it kept track of the statistics. I had problems playing the original because of the mechanics. My favorite baseball game is Baseball Stars. Unfortunately, as I've grown older, I find it so much more difficult to get into a game that requires timing and skill. I played Ken Griffey Jr Presents MLB on the SNES the other day and got absolutely crushed.

Great video and presentation, but the game selection....... Most of these are just turn-based strategy or sports titles, THREE Bases Loaded games? Why not include part 3? 😉 Heh heh. Baseball Simulator 1.000 has a 165 game season, I've done that ONCE. Plus, you have to either play, or 'Simulate' every other game to skip. And it takes bloody forever, could've put that in for one of the Bases Loaded games..... Glad you at least showed Tecmo Super Bowl. A season can take a long time (not like the baseball games though)! Track & Field II is also long and frustrating, good thing it has a password system! R.C. Pro-Am and Excitebike are also good candidates, those games don't have endings!
