  • A quick look at what I did with tree branches that were growing between my fence and the neighbor's after cutting it down in the winter, finally found a use for the branches that we were going to get rid of and made these nice, ladder-like, tree branch trellis' for my climbing vegetables, beans, and squash and my other trellis veggies in the garden.

The tree is called a Flaming Mimosa Tree which blooms these beautiful pink puff like flowers. I used to have one in my previous house, we purchased and planted it in the front yard because it looked a little tropical and it's known to attract hummingbirds.

I collect sticks from the yard and make trellises for my garden. Makes it interesting.

The mimosa tree is a nitrogen fixing pioneer tree , I love ally cropping with them , make perfect shade for hot weather at about 70% shade . When you prune the roots have nitrogen nodules and will release it in to the soil and the green is a great chop and drop material ! So it's a fertilizer shade cloth all in one ! Nice trellis !!

Hi Wells Farm! Thank you for that info, that's great to know. The main problem with this tree is that it's growing between my chain link fence and the neighbor's wood fence - actually entangled and breaking both fences. I chop it multiple times a year and it KEEPS GROWING! It's been three years and only now the branches that I made my trellis with are breaking down!

@@SemiHomestead that's the awesome part , you can cut it very hard and not kill it but each time gather 20%+ leaf protein for the soil microbes or animal fodder and each time you cut you release more and more fertility. Don't be afraid to cut it out of the fence and keep it tame .

Mimosa is not invasive everywhere. It depends on where you are. I grew up in Louisiana and they were becoming invasive but then a fungus attacked them. There’s still a good number but they aren’t like they were before. They actually are a really good nectar plant for butterflies and tropical migrant birds such as orioles and hummingbirds who are more used to trees with extravagant flowers like that. They smell nice too they are really beautiful trees.

They bloom around the tail end of migration/early summer. I saw one once with about seven orioles and swallowtail butterflies feeding on it. It was like a mini tropical paradise.

Well I love hummingbirds so I may try to see I can have it grow without breaking our fence!

I love this! My husband is making a few of these for my squash and cucumbers that I'm growing in 5 gal. buckets right now. But you've given me inspiration to use the same design for my tomatoes next year. Thanks so much!

Nice trellis. I had a weird tree weed that looked like that. It kept popping up next to the house. And i'd lop ot off, and it would pop back up. I finally dug out as much as i could and paved over it. Someone called it a juneberry that might have been planted by a squirrel.

It's a mimosa tree. Has medicinal properties. Can make tea from it. Great trellis's!

I believe it's an invasive species called wild mimosa.

That is correct. It puts on an awesome show in May or so, but the rest of the year it is a real pain.
