  • How we installed the High-Performance S&S Camshaft in our Interceptor 650.
    We approached this install in a peculiar way, as we wanted to gather accurate Dyno information on the cam's effect alone. We'll follow up with a more instructional video where we remove the head (as recommended by S&S), but for now, here are some tips and insights from the TEC workshop.
    Take a look at the cam on our website: www.tecbikeparts.com/product/...
    Here is a link to the (unofficial) Service Manual: drive.google.com/file/d/1EPfo...
    Thanks for watching,

    I really want to see the 865 kit! Also, no matter what I do to the motor, I want to improve the brakes. My Auto Shop Teacher began the entire program by saying, If you can’t stop it, or you can’t steer it, don’t drive it! Everything I’ve ever driven, in my work as a mechanic, test driver for one shop, or on my own cars began by testing the brakes and steering before I went on to anything else.

    Very interesting. Some may say if you want a faster bike but a Triumph etc but I like my Interceptor.
    People used to say the same when I had a GSX1400 but I had TTS change the cams and I fitted a KN and Akropovic exhaust, it flew (136 at the rear wheel) and Below a ton it wasn’t far off a Hayabusa.

    Ive had the S&S cam fitted along with the stinger 2into1. I already have the dna filter and booster plug on my gt650. Where to start.... well the bike still keeps its essence but is just a bit more manic! The power is more instant and builds quicker through the gears, you find yourself over the national limit with plenty of oomph left to go if the mood takes you. It will rev all the way into the red no problem but is just as happy chugging around if the mood takes you keeping that ability to have a chilled ride.Overall, with the mods now fitted I think its a noticeably better and more versatile bike than standard.....and that stinger exhaust note is bliss. Thanks Tec.

      @MrJulianneave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good to hear your thoughts on it. Is the drop in torque at lower rpm very noticeable to you? And has it affected some of the daily practicalities like starting, idling, fuel economy that you've noticed? Cheers

    • @redstormcrow
      @redstormcrow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MrJulianneave hi mate, I actually changed bikes just last week moving over to a Harley! I will say it was a difficult decision that I finally made due to long rides with friends becoming uncomfortable and in no way diminishes my appreciation of the GT650. Now to answer your question, the cam made no difference at all to the basic functions such as idling. The supposed drop in torque for outright hp wasn't really significant at all, in fact I'd say after a few hundred miles on the bike it actually felt more predictable with a better torque spread throughout the range with the added bonus of being able to get more of a shift on should you want to. If I had another enfield I wouldn't hesitate in doing exactly the same mods again. Hope that helps, anything else just ask.

    • @redstormcrow
      @redstormcrow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh and fuel economy. Strangely I felt that the fuel economy was the same if not slightly better! I put it down to the fact that the bike was quicker through the gears therefore requiring less effort to achieve the same speed as before. Not a clue if that is a scientifically apt view but it's all I could come up with. Thanks again.

    • @MrJulianneave
      @MrJulianneave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redstormcrow Really appreciate the response. I've never had much interest in Harleys myself but I think they'd definitely fit the bill if you wanted more comfort and more relaxed cruising at higher speeds - hope it's going well for you! I think if I was to get a new bike I'd maybe go for a 1200cc Triumph like the Thruxton R, but couldn't really justify the extra cost to myself and don't really need the extra performance.
      Yeah it's funny that you get some people like TEC with the opinion that the s&s cam significantly changes the character of the bike from a more tractable machine to a high revving "more Japanese" feeling bike, whilst others like yourself say the drop in torque wasn't really that noticeable. I suppose it's partially individual opinion. I'd definitely be keen to get a bit more of a free revving feeling and continuation of the power at higher rpm, but wouldn't want to lose too much of the ability to do easy hill starts with a pillion, or recover by just opening the throttle if you find yourself coming out of a corner a year high, or being able to stay in high gear up a hill by just twisting your wrist a bit more.
      I currently have DNA filter, free flowing mufflers and headers and a powertronic ecu so figured the cam might be the last modification I do before I decide I'm done with chasing performance. Did you have an ecu tuner on yours, and if so did you get a map made on a dyno after installing the cam?
      I've got a feeling we're both in Australia - I was thinking about maybe getting the work done at revelry cycles in Sydney, who seem to be pretty committed to these bikes.

    • @redstormcrow
      @redstormcrow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrJulianneave no mate, I'm in UK. I love revelry cycles, great company. I never thought I wasca harley-davidson man until I ride one. The s&s cam does change the character in the fact that I can only describe as schizophrenic, its basically the same as before but if you want to ride harder and faster it will certainly change personality to oblige. I didn't do a remap, I was planning one with a power commander when I changed bike I felt the booster plug made a massive difference to the bike at low revs and improved the gear shift, I have no explanation but a smoother ride. Also, I think that after riding the bike for a few hour or so rides after the cam was installed the bike seemed to adapt to the cam as I'm sure I did too. Honestly, money well spent in my opinion and with revelry nearby I wouldn't hesitate in letting them fettle my bike. Cheers.

      Hi
      To some point I agree, power gains must not effect the basic bike's soul too much and most importantly be affordable.
      It is easy to get carried away and pour cash into a bike in the search for more power. But in the case of the RE 650 the bike has been well designed, then had power removed for marketing reasons. Why would your bike smash the land speed record for its class, then not shout it from the rooftops like Triumph did in the 60's with the Bonneville. We live in different times now.

    Interesting how a big bore Enfield has the same bore & stroke as an 865 Triumph.

    I was a bit surprised to see the cam lobes for left and right cylinders have different timing and duration. I suppose this is helps exhaust tuning with the uneven firing intervals. The valve durations still look pretty mild for the S&S cam so the original RE cam must have been barely opening the valves!

    S&S makes it clear their pistons and big bore kits cams etc. are for racing applications only "FOR CLOSED COURSE COMPETITION USE ONLY. NOT INTENDED FOR STREET USE. LEGAL IN CALIFORNIA ONLY FOR RACING VEHICLES WHICH MAY NEVER BE USED, OR REGISTERED OR LICENSED FOR USE, UPON A HIGHWAY", so while they want to sell them, maybe they are reticent to promote them in the general market. You will get guys throwing in an 865 kit, not putting a stronger clutch in and burning up a clutch. I put a cam in a Street twin and it was really pretty easy. The cam install on the RE doesn't seem suitable for the average owner as replacing the shims seems beyond most guys capability., plus removing the head to port the exhaust. But just my thoughts. Do you have an updated timeline for release of you TEC factory style header pipes for the Continental GT 650? Someone in India posted a video last month with an S&S “full” exhaust system, but S&S sold the manufacture rights to Royal Enfield in 2019.They were either on an old prototype, or something R.E. Is about to release. “About” could mean never. I’d rather support you if you make them.

      I can tell you 100% that S&S Cycle in USA made a set of stainless steel catless header for the 650 twins. It was posted on their website in a PDF price list when I looked on 6-30-19. By the time I took my Continental GT 650 home on 7-2-19, the website was revised and the headers missing. I went round and round with S&S for a couple of months before they finally told me they sold the rights to the headers to R.E..The mystery continues! At some point R.E. may release these or not. This is a HUGE opportunity for someone to make a set of free flowing header pipes, without mid-stream Cat Converters, to mimic the factory routing allowing use of any number of silencers. The 2 into 1 looks great on some Interceptors, but the Continental GT. I have sever buyers remorse after buying the 650 GT and lack of support from R.E. I should have purchased that Thruxton R from Thailand. At least triumphand their partners support the bikes.

      It can be used on its own but as with fitting most cams with longer valve timing you lose power and torque at the bottom end of the range and gain at the top.
      If you also fit the 865 kit you should gain all the way through the Rev range. Hopefully someone will post a video of a bike with both mods fitted.

    Very informative and interesting BUT surely its missing the point of this bike. Early Japanese had higher performing engines in inferior chassis/running gear. I get improving the torque but turning the engine into a high rev sports type engine. Buy an old r6 and tune the ass out of it. As an experiment to see the highest performance you can achieve I suppose is of value.

    • @georgemilburn6213
      @georgemilburn6213 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes I total see your point and personally for my own use would just fit an exhaust system , as this enhances the essence of the bike . For me the cam is starting to affect the motors character too much and like I say now feels more like a Honda motor in it's power delivery . A lot of younger riders may feel at home with a rev hungry motor, but I like the mid range grunt a 2-1 exhaust and slightly milder cam gives you. I may make my own 'stump puller ' cam tuned particularly for torque, but this would probably not be for production. Best way for more torque is more cc's but cost to benefit on a £5500 bike has to be questioned. especially as I was more than happy with the 53bhp simply bolting on an exhaust and air filter gave ( also easily taken off again when selling a bike). I think that spec hits the bikes sweet spot !

    Please don't get me wrong, each to there own, but I really do not understand why you would buy a bike like the RE 650 and them try to make it a fast bike? Why not just buy a fast bike to begin with? Your quality of work and knowledge is without question. However, your judgment to do all of this in the first place is a bit spotty, in my opinion. But, party on...

    When these things first came out I got so much flack for suggesting that a 650 twin should be easily capable of producing 20% more power than the quoted and test figures.
    It was if I was talking heresy, akin to suggesting fitting a turbo to the baby Jesus!
    The biker world has apparently grown old and stupid. It’s as if the desire is for an antidote to the Blackbird/Hayabusa/Kawasaki thing race to the top end of the speed chart, by begging for a kiddies paddling pool - and water wings just in case the tiny Swedish Elf puppet gets upset because the plants get ‘too much’ carbon!!
    In my humble opinion, these Triumph inspired, Anglo Indian re-imagined ‘Royal Enfield’ 650s are perfect for creating REAL cafe racers, as opposed to the passé racers with their vacant Bermuda Triangles behind the carbs, impractical, thin, cross-ribbed poser seats in brown leather - with integrated LEDs!!!
    For an authentic modern cafe racer:
    Alloy rims; alloy GP tank; alloy mudguards; the decent exhaust and cam fitted here; bigger valves; gas flowed head (including widened and polished exhaust ports); big bore kit if you like.
    Plus, as well as getting rid of all the Eurotwattery sensors... CARBS! A pair of Amal Mk II Concentrics would be an historically appropriate choice. Maybe enough to achieve 60bhp?
    How nice would that be?
    Did I just describe a proper bike? You be the judge.

Nothing wrong with the work you are doing but why buy a cheap, lazy cruising bike and spend all the money you saved turning it into something it was never designed to be? Just buy one of the many sports bikes that will hose this any day of the week, even after all the mods.
