Nope, you were pretty much spot on. Ahav, on the other hand, messed up the port forwarding part. It should be 443 to 8123, not 8173! I think he deserves another slap for that :P

With all respect but promoting this "platform" is really like selling "snake oil" - countless security issues - within HA and with "integrations" not to mention HACKs, and when you addressing this with examples - "developers" banning you from official forum without warrning. There is also politicaly correct bias with community so if you not following current trends you will also get banned. Deveopers started even banning russian developers:)))) Which is just crazy. And last but no least - non existing stability which has long lasting tradition and it seems that it will never end. If you really thing that you want put your famili safety and security in such a "profesional" and "responsible" envirnoment then good luck.

Note on using the Conbee (or any USB-based Zigbee controllers) in combination with the RPi, although your case may have actually solved it:
The WiFi antenna signal may interfere with the Zigbee antenna signal, so you need to distance them apart using a USB extension cable (or use a case that includes it).

Actually running Home Assistant right now because your earlier video on the Tuya local integration gave me the push to do it. Works pretty good so far. Main issue the rube goldberg collection of sensors, IR blasters, and scripts needed to make it work with the minisplit, is just one of the many rabbit holes you can find in Home Assistant. Another Home Assistant rabbit hole is ESPhome, which leads to soldering and burned fingers

I may have missed this - but a silly blocker for me as a complete newbie to Raspberry Pi 4's and Home Assistant is that the SD card may need to be removed before it can boot via USB (SSD). So after you've put USB Boot via the Raspberry Imager on the SD Card, you've inserted the SD Card into the Raspberry Pi 4 and let it boot to copy the boot-up instructions to the Pi... Turn it off, take out the SD Card and the USB Boot should work.
This took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out why the SSD would not boot up Home Assistant.

Good job paul. Might I suggest to add the Home Assistant Google Drive Backup add-on. This will backup your HA every few days to your google drive account automatically, keeping all updates and changes you make to HA current in case of a drive failure. Can even set it to delete the old versions so it doesn't take up all your google drive space. But i agree with all you've said and done. Again keep up the good work. 🙂

      @@paulhibbert I understand.
But local backups and/or manual backups is the same as no backups at all.
It's going to work for a few days then weeks from now it has been forgotten and all you have is a month old backup, and that probably equals several hours of development lost.
I upload a new backup every morning. Probably not needed anymore, but in the beginning when lots of changes are done it's very helpful to have current backups.

Just got inspired by this and installed home assistant and commissioned 5 lights with scenes. I deployed on proxmox and it had none of the non-responsive delay periods after the install wizard. A few suggestions on Pauls approach (1) I'd put a redirect on your router so the external server gets redirected to your internal server when you're connected at home (2) A virtualisation server with NVME is available for ~200-250 USD and sips tens of watts... then you can run pihole etc isolated but on the same box

I have moved from SmartThings to HA three weeks ago and can confirm you will become single due the work in learning all this. This video would have saved me some time starting out as the information is all over place. Some advise I started in Pi3 but has I have 80 zigbee devices it seems to struggle and was getting slow already. I moved this to a Small computer with a celeron processor and like rapid now. If you are deep into automations I recommend getting the right hardware. As Paul said raspberry Pi with and SSD disk should be best for most.
Once your setup and ready to play around more look at trigger IDs - game changer in automation clean up!

Thank you Paul for this. Between yourself and those mentioned I have a much better understanding of what HA can do and how to do it. Funny - my wife thinks I am having an affair on computer as I have spent days watching videos and then taking what I watched and converting into how I will use in my home. This was a massive undertaking and happy now that I am on the other side. Well worth it and I am still amazed at the things my home now does.

Amazing Video for beginners for sure. Really enjoyed it, even I am not a HA beginner anymore :)
Step 1 to 7 and all the raspberry pi crap you can avoid ( and all the pain with it ) by just getting a Odroid N2+ with pre-installed
Homeassistant Image :) odroid UK and amerdroid US has them ( can not post link here I guess ).
I personally use in both houses Homeassistant Blue which are bascially the same just neater looking case.
Also when you first startup HA I would highly recommend to not let HA all import what it finds, especially if you have already a lot of Smart devices.
I would rather recommend doing that manually one by one from Settings > Devices/Services later and immediately start renaming the entities and devices to names
that actually make sense to you.
Otherwise you can end up with hundreds or even thousands of entities you have to rename, disable, etc. makes things easier.
Would assume a lot of beginners in your audience also would appreciate a HACS Video, without it, Home Assistant is only half as good :)

Was about to say the same. I ran HA on a Win machine for a couple of weeks just over a year ago to have a look. Ordered an N2+ as you mentioned and never looked back. Rock-solid from day one. I have dozens of NR flows, actionable notifications, cameras, thermostats etc etc. Very pleased with my choice.

    Great, entertaining video!
I view the nabu casa fee as a support/goodwill gesture. These people work hard and I can afford it. I'm an old hack so maybe I'm an old softy
what I like about node red the most besides the interface is the fact that's easy to store the state of your room. So for example, my lights are rigged to remember their last state when they were turned off. That way I don't have to faff about with scenes and settings 99% of the time. Also, much easier to expose to the outside world - you don't need an amazon account for example. I'm on the fence though about exposing my server directly, still digging into security.
I'm realizing now that automations are the tip of the iceberg with node red.

Thanks for the video Paul, informative and definitely more entertaining than other automation uploads I've seen. I'm thinking of making the jump from Google Home to home assistant, not really because I need it, but because playing with tech is fun. Are all the parts still relevant today and is it possible to implement the Matter/Thread new standard I keep hearing about?
I do already have a Qnap Nas, is it worth doing it on that or should I run home assistant on a stand-alone raspberry pi?

Arrrggg I finally installed HA after seeing this and it's *so unfriendly,* even to someone who's ok writing a bit of python.
Got my zigbee coordinator connected - reset and added a few bulbs and a sensor and I'm already pretty frustrated/angry at the whole process.
Replicating the basic "sensor makes room lights bright during day, dim at night, turn off after 5 mins no motion" rule that Hue makes easily was pretty painful. If it's going to be that hard to re-make the routines I have in there and Alexa this is not going to be for me and I'm in awe of the patience anyone has that can do this.
