My first reaction was is Emma's fitness regime being mishandled. She has said previously, in fact, even as long ago as when she was playing the US Open that she has to toughen up and become more robust. Players are all different in respect of what can affect them. Think back to Andy Murray's early career, I seem to remember him falling about and seizing up with cramp. People said the same about him that he wouldn't make it because he wasn't tough enough.
Emma' physio is treating her blisters with surgical spirit, which is causing her a lot of pain to the point of screaming. I share peoples anxiety with those who want her to do well and feel nothing for those who only want to have a go at her and delight in her downfall. Get a life. I think it will take some time for her body to adapt.

Yes Queens 2005, against the Swedish player Murray had bad cramp and couldnt continue, even Djokovic in his first years had all sorts of fitness issues, breathing problems etc until he completely changed his diet, then after that the rest is history, 20 grand slam titles.

Hingis set a series of "youngest-ever" records during the 1990s, including youngest-ever Grand Slam champion and youngest-ever world No.1 Hingis was 16 when she won Wimbledon. Raducanu is now 20 (which is female tennis is definitely NOT young). She wants the money and the spotlight but can't string 4 wins in a row. The great's are always facing serious injuries and have to just push thru. Her excuses are laughable at best.

Age isn't the only factor. It's years on tour, number of matches played that brings on the experience to cope with various situations arising. Very easy for us to say so and so without the context of her unprecedented trajectory. Emma's path was instant graduation into the elite club after USO. She didn't even play any wta matches prior to her USO. Now the grinds of tour life begins. Her body needs to adapt to playing week in week out which she hasn't had prior to her 1st year on tour now.

After her run at Wimbledon last year, I thought great, here is a wonderful new talent. Now she can go away and learn her trade on the tour and maybe win a slam some time in the future, nobody knew what was to follow! I never expected Emma to be winning multiple GS after the US Open and that she needed tome to develop. However we cannot ignore the poor results. Emma has played 9 matches this season, less than her usopen run. won 3 lost 6. So while it can be argued she is still learning it could be that this is her real level and the usopen was an aberration. Is Emma a better player than Harriet Dart? I was so excited for Emma and never had high expectations this season but not able to win 2 consecutive matches against players in the lower rungs of the top 100 is a concern and it may😢 be that Emma is not the elite player we are expecting, time will tell, I hope I am wrong.

Realistically she was ranked 361 in April 2021. To hv instantly graduate to top 15 within a few months doesn't reflect her true match position. She needs time to build her game. All players go thru years of matches to achieve their high rankings. But Emma did so within just a few months. And she has just played less than 150 matches in her entire career. Her back to back matches are only starting this year on her 1st pro tour. The continuous grinding is subjecting her body to so many vigorous training sessions. She needs to adapt and build up physically. So just don't jump on her after any losses. It's her steep learning curve, having to stay on top with the others who hv taken years, whilst she has only months.

I love Emma and I think she is being totally honest about the challenges of adapting physically to life on the Tour - but I think the messaging needs some work. The problem is people think she is just using her injuries as an excuse. It would be better if she said something like: “Look, I’m a novice on clay and was totally outclassed by an awesome player who I beat last year on grass. I had some blisters that certainly didn’t help but they weren’t the reason I lost. Yes, we knew I had an issue before the match, and with hindsight it might have been better to let Katie or Sonay play in my place, but I thought the issue was manageable and I really really wanted to play for my country. I’m sorry it worked out the way it did - but don’t think it made any difference to the result and I got some valuable experience.” Saying something like that would help keep people onside. Glad she had the sense to finish the match (as she did with Kovinic). If you are playing for your country you need to go out even if you only have one leg. Don’t need a branding expert to tell you that. BTW, can’t tell you how much I love Emma and believe in her.

@@alamin-fr8rc Yes, that sounds like an exaggeration and didn’t sit comfortably with me - but we can’t know the truth of that. My point was: even if that is true (ie she really couldn’t move) you can’t let people think you’re hiding behind that. And if it wasn’t true, then it’s even more important that she owns it out loud, because she won’t make the next step till she accepts the truth that she was nowhere near good enough to beat V on clay. If I’m honest I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a bit of denial going on in her head - but let’s cut the kid a break! She’s a teenager, she’s finding out about herself in a real pressure cooker. That’s the real soap opera here. She’s been a queen for 6 months: now she’s on her ass. How’s she going to react? But as I say, I believe in her, I think she’ll figure it.
