it wasnt a dogfighter, it was a fighter interceptor for our quick reaction alert. get into the sky as fast as possible and as high as possible, to fire missles at russian bombers. :) during test excercises it managed to weapon lock concorde, and U2. so its not all doom and gloom.
The radar merely "slaves" the seeker head. It isn't really an IRCM alternative. But it sure does make for some nice shots on prop climbers or weird angle shots
In alot of lightning articles. They said the best climb technique will be 25-35 deg. using ur speed to climb. anything more than 45 actually slows u down. With the old mentioned techique. U can climb at 50 000 ft per minute.
way to fix this, increase the ceiling on warthunder games map height, introduce proper high altitude bombers. also the lightning could climb straight up with its afterburner. highest climbing plane to ever exist even now. reading up about it, at low level altitude the acceleration should be very similar if not slightly faster than the f104 starfighter.
Ever heard of the lightning that climbed to 88,000 feet to practice an attack on a U2, was faster then said U2, and overtook Concorde when the other interceptors in the challenge couldn’t? All the same pilot to
The reason why the Lighting sucks in Wt is the same reasons why RB EC failed, people are just not patient enough to play it properly are you seriously surprised that a plane made to intercept and engage at high altitudes sucks at low altitudes? you can say that it still sucks on high altitude combat, and yeah of course, if most rb maps it fights are the size of a peanut, you just simply don't have the space to engage the enemy and disengage using your Superior speed and acceleration to lose the foe and relocate to re engage, an EC map or even maybe the british channel map wouldn't be big enough for these Craft and given how fast they can fly forget hyping planes like the Tomcat or any Future high altitude interceptor in this game, because the only planes that will always fit the meta are the ones that are decent enough at low altitude battles as the playerbase push for shorter and faster matches
Elinzar Not to mention the Lightning was made to intercept nuclear bombers, not fighters. Everyone overhyped the hell out of it. It’s very good at doing its job, but it can’t do its job in War Thunder.
@@turkeyboy5543 It was a well respected plane in its day, like alot on here though, its getting bad press because it's not a low altitude dog fighter that everyone wants.
i think they muddled the afterburner, here's why: The lightning's top engine is further back than the bottom, so the afterburner on the top should be longer and the bottom shorter, but its the opposite.
War Thunder as a concept is amazing , with truly skilled developers, however the execution of that concept is done horribly wrong. They will add wonderful vehicles but the game play mechanics, the maps and objectives are utter garbage.
This game still has many of the same problems it did 4-5 years ago; ground forces meta has been to bum-rush and spawn camp for waaaaaaaay too long, and the BR compression is horrendous in most game modes. But as long as people still buy Premium they don't care.
I think the unequal afterburn seen behind the plane is due to the fact that the engines are not directly on top of each other, but staggered. So one has longer to the exhaust than the other.
As a "Selling point" I believe Gajin will be adding the SEPECAT Jaguar, Panvia Tornado, and some form of the Harrier before they touch the Eurofighter Typhoon and the patch will be called Tornado season :-)
Leandis Floyd or it’s meant to intercept Russia’s nuclear bombers and goals fast as “lightning” it wasn’t meant to engage or fighters, it’s an interceptor
The asymmetcial look of the afterburner flames is because the engines are off-set. The top one is further ahead than the bottom one. You can see this on the x-ray view in the hangar.
Zetaris made a video stating that it's actually overperforming in more areas than it's underperforming, but this can probably be said for most planes. It underperforms with turning and speed acceleration at low altitudes if I am correct.
I worked on various aspects of the EE Lightning, cant expand further as i'm bound by the official secrets act. They were designed for short range intercept missions to take out Russian Supersonic Bombers.
The Lightning was the only plane able to catch the U-2 Spyplane. So it climbes like hell. This is a citation from Wikipedia: In 1984, during a NATO exercise, Flt Lt Mike Hale intercepted a U-2 at a height which they had previously considered safe (thought to be 66,000 feet (20,000 m)). Records show that Hale also climbed to 88,000 ft (27,000 m) in his Lightning F.3 XR749. This was not sustained level flight but a ballistic climb, in which the pilot takes the aircraft to top speed and then puts the aircraft into a climb, exchanging speed for altitude. Hale also participated in time-to-height and acceleration trials against Lockheed F-104 Starfighters from Aalborg. He reports that the Lightnings won all races easily with the exception of the low-level supersonic acceleration, which was a "dead heat".[78] Lightning pilot and Chief Ex.
Don't forget its Red Top and Firestreak are subsonic missile, it can't even catch up a B-57 800m away if fired when both aircraft at 400km/h, if B-57 decided to do an non-defending dive.
Reality of the Lightning was to be launched from dispersal airfields at very short notice, short take off and exceptionally rapid climb rate (one held as a record for decades). The high speed was also used to intercept high flying Soviet Bombers. They would aim to shoot them down with guns and missiles while allowing the V Bombers to head to the USSR to drop their nuclear payload. The Lightning's were later bolsted by the Phantom 2 and Tornado in their latter years. However the Lightning still played a role in quick reaction interception until nearly the end of the cold war with a operational history of being a proven and effective asset from its appearance just after WW2 in the 50s thru it's career until just a few years before the gulf war! I believe the RAF retired them in 88. Sleek, manoeuvrable, capable and ridiculously quick. (It's near vertical take off angle is something to behold) it was known for feeling like you were riding a rocket, although given the fact that it's engines were 2 (used normally to power bombers (Vickers valiant) and Airliners (dehavilland comet)) mounted on top of each other with afterburners, a set of wings a gun and some nutter up front trying to fly the maniac! They were highly agile and aerobatic, one of the very few planes capable of interception of U2s and the SR71 - which was HIGHLY classified at the time and occured over the North sea and also capable of Mach 2+ and yes it could easily out pace concorde... Overall a magical plane and awesome bit of engineering.
I know this may sound dumb but I like how it’s name being the Lightning with how you should play this aircraft. You climb and build up your strategy and then strike from the clouds like a bolt of lightning carrying a payload of missiles. That just me trying to be stupidly poetic I guess.
Time flies fast. You'd be surprised. And it would probably be sooner than that. More like in 3 years for *late* F-16 variants and 4 years for F-22 Raptor.
I feel like it acts like its name suggests. It comes soaring out of the clouds and strikes its enemies down like a bolt of lightning with the speed to match. So fast that your prey is unable to react.
Yes the lightening may have a better sustained turn rate due to massive energy loss when turning however, the F4 has a way better first turn at 800kmh+ and in jet combat apart from the draken sustained turn fighting means absolutely nothing
This aircraft was designed to get as high as possible as fast as possible to launch its missiles against incoming bombers. Nothing else. It was essentially a missile for carrying and launching missiles. It was basically 1950's technology and could climb faster than any other aircraft of its day, right up to 85,000 feet.
The fact that it can be out-climbed and out-accelerated by the MiG-21 at high altitude is a joke... The Lightning was the only aircraft to catch up with AND overtake Concorde while it was going mach 2.04... F-15s, F-16s, F-14s, Mirages and F-104s all attempted the same thing and failed... It also had a lower wing load than the Phantom, so should be able to out-turn it at subsonic speeds...
The thing is, boom and zoom doesn't work in top tier jets because even if someone is slower than you, if you burn too much energy zooming back up, people can just nose up and fire a missile and you don't have the energy to dodge it.
Cyberboi He's probably fine with it cause he doesn't play British stuff, nearly everyone Ive seen defending gaijin doesn't play British stuff, instead they play American or Russian stuff which hardly ever has a shit underpowered vehicle so they don't care.
@@kieranwilliams5148 Yeah, the only people who are fine with this are most likely the pathetic part of the playerbase which are just happy to have another incredibly underperforming vehicle they can club.
Exactly, people are selfish and as long as they have the OP vehicle then they couldn't care. I bet if everything was flipped round tomorrow and the British were OP while America and Russia were underpowered then Kenny would be saying the same as us.
If I remember correctly this plane was made to be able to fly in vacume or close to vacume as it would be able to fly over ata missiles and other planes and shoot out low earth orbit satellites
Thanks for trying, The EE Lightning in WT sucks, the real thing now that's a different story. Ah well, back to the virtual drawing board. Just wait till the Brits get the Harrier :) Just know it won't be as good as the US version :/
@@yatokami7907 I'm guessing you haven't actually seen one in real life, because spectacular is the one word you would use when you see one take off. Long-range, no. Effective, only as a high altitude interceptor and admittedly nothing else Fast, in a climb SPECTACULAR. Definitely :)
@@southernbear736 Spent 4yrs working on an RAF airbase in Germany, alongside F4-M's (FGR2) and GR7's. The only time that I ever saw people rushing out to watch an aircraft take off, was when the last Flying Lightning in Europe, visited the airfield. (I think it was going to South Africa as the CAA wouldn't allow it to fly in the UK) The sound of the Afterburner, alone made it an amazing aircraft to watch, eclipsing anything the Phantoms could do, and the near-vertical climb once it cleared the runway made the Harriers attempt look futile ;)

it wasnt a dogfighter, it was a fighter interceptor for our quick reaction alert. get into the sky as fast as possible and as high as possible, to fire missles at russian bombers. :) during test excercises it managed to weapon lock concorde, and U2. so its not all doom and gloom.
88,000 feet!!
9:55 'It's like an interceptor dude' I mean, I hate to break it to you but that is what the plane was designed to be 🤷🏼♂️
The lightning's clime rate and acceleration needs a buff, plus it should go quicker at low altitude
A way to try and overcome flares is by locking on planes on the radar, cause the missiles are controlled by the radar and IR signature.
Yes but, certainly I'm not the only person who has issues picking on with plane radar
The radar merely "slaves" the seeker head. It isn't really an IRCM alternative. But it sure does make for some nice shots on prop climbers or weird angle shots
Great if the radar ever worked when you needed it.
@@piscessoedroen it's like missiles, they always seem to prioritise locking on to allies. Even if the enemy is closer
8:24 I think it might be because the bottom engine is placed farther back than the top engine.
Yup. Engines where staggered so as to avoid too much weight in the rear.
I think it would have caused issues on takeoff otherwise.
When will gaijin add new jet bombers? They just keep adding useless helis lol
We need the B-52 in WarThunder
Helis are arguably more useful then new bombers
@@Katniss218 Thats what I keep saying but no one listens.... we already have jets that can shoot a bomber from a mile away so why not.
@@patriotic-panda I beg to differ

In alot of lightning articles. They said the best climb technique will be 25-35 deg. using ur speed to climb. anything more than 45 actually slows u down. With the old mentioned techique. U can climb at 50 000 ft per minute.
Not in WT since it's underperforming by 20% at low altitude
I played this game for 5 years and im still waiting for the sturmtiger
Enjoy your minute long reload
@@willdyer9688 the Kv2 without a loader already meets that lol. Besides, i think a bathtub with a bomb load would take a little longer than a minute.
way to fix this, increase the ceiling on warthunder games map height, introduce proper high altitude bombers.
also the lightning could climb straight up with its afterburner. highest climbing plane to ever exist even now.
reading up about it, at low level altitude the acceleration should be very similar if not slightly faster than the f104 starfighter.
"overload 7g" I see warthunder is back on it's bullshit with british planes, meanwhile migs can turn whatever g's they desire
Just like the chally 2 they have dialed this thing way back
14:30 Welp, there we have it. Phly was outplayed by Corona
Ever heard of the lightning that climbed to 88,000 feet to practice an attack on a U2, was faster then said U2, and overtook Concorde when the other interceptors in the challenge couldn’t? All the same pilot to
The reason why the Lighting sucks in Wt is the same reasons why RB EC failed, people are just not patient enough to play it properly
are you seriously surprised that a plane made to intercept and engage at high altitudes sucks at low altitudes?
you can say that it still sucks on high altitude combat, and yeah of course, if most rb maps it fights are the size of a peanut, you just simply don't have the space to engage the enemy and disengage using your Superior speed and acceleration to lose the foe and relocate to re engage, an EC map or even maybe the british channel map wouldn't be big enough for these Craft and given how fast they can fly
forget hyping planes like the Tomcat or any Future high altitude interceptor in this game, because the only planes that will always fit the meta are the ones that are decent enough at low altitude battles as the playerbase push for shorter and faster matches
Elinzar Not to mention the Lightning was made to intercept nuclear bombers, not fighters. Everyone overhyped the hell out of it. It’s very good at doing its job, but it can’t do its job in War Thunder.
@@turkeyboy5543 It was a well respected plane in its day, like alot on here though, its getting bad press because it's not a low altitude dog fighter that everyone wants.
i think they muddled the afterburner, here's why:
The lightning's top engine is further back than the bottom, so the afterburner on the top should be longer and the bottom shorter, but its the opposite.
War Thunder as a concept is amazing , with truly skilled developers, however the execution of that concept is done horribly wrong. They will add wonderful vehicles but the game play mechanics, the maps and objectives are utter garbage.
They'd rather spend money on dancing exotic girls to promote the broken shit game instead of using said money to fix and change it for the better.
This game still has many of the same problems it did 4-5 years ago; ground forces meta has been to bum-rush and spawn camp for waaaaaaaay too long, and the BR compression is horrendous in most game modes. But as long as people still buy Premium they don't care.
Pale Horseman As a casual Air AB player, I disagree. (Though I did not play 4-5 years ago)
@@adamngaykoala3048 link pls giggidy
I think the unequal afterburn seen behind the plane is due to the fact that the engines are not directly on top of each other, but staggered. So one has longer to the exhaust than the other.
Phly perfectly summed up British vehicles in once sentence "it just doesn't fit the meta"
Now that WT has the Lightning, J35, and F-4, they need to add the F-8 Crusader!
New challenge Phly: Play the hs 129 b3 "Quack" in air battles, 75mm kills only

As a "Selling point" I believe Gajin will be adding the SEPECAT Jaguar, Panvia Tornado, and some form of the Harrier before they touch the Eurofighter Typhoon and the patch will be called Tornado season :-)
Hence the name "Lightning" it's supposed to come from the clouds and strike on a targets :)
8:24: *phly goes into map*
Phly: 'let's just cut that out'
Guy in the chat: 'Covid-19 is fake'
TH-cam:' You cannot escape me'
Such a legendary jet pretty sure all of the UK loves it been my Favorit jet since I was a kid
BnZ doenst exist at this high of BR, missiles and other planes with burners completely negate what ever potential energy you have
The exhaust shock cones are different lengths because the engines are staggered vertically. The bottom one is slightly behind the top one.

PhyI I know you're busy testing out new stuff but remember to try the m42 Italian meatball launcher attempt #9
The Lightning was the only plane able to catch the U-2 Spyplane. So it climbes like hell. This is a citation from Wikipedia:
In 1984, during a NATO exercise, Flt Lt Mike Hale intercepted a U-2 at a height which they had previously considered safe (thought to be 66,000 feet (20,000 m)).

In real life the lightning could get to 30000 feet in 90 seconds. Can it do this in-game? NO.
That’s what I was thinking… I didn’t know why he was only climbing at 15 degrees when the lightning could do a Mach 1 vertical climb!
It's really cool watching the Phlyman making it happen with a difficult aircraft!
*"iT cOuLd oUtPeRfOrM f-15'S aT aLtItUdE"*
The new planes aren't really a selling point for me.
A dude with ~ 650 hours and stuck on Germany with Rank V planes and rank II - III tanks.
I have rank III-IV tanks with rank II planes with 650 hours lmao

I know this may sound dumb but I like how it’s name being the Lightning with how you should play this aircraft. You climb and build up your strategy and then strike from the clouds like a bolt of lightning carrying a payload of missiles. That just me trying to be stupidly poetic I guess.
I have a prediction in 2 or 3 years war thunder will have the first 21st-century machine in it.
Type 16 from 2016
M1A2 in game is also a SEP. There's a cooling unit in the bustle rack that wasn't added till the SEP series.
That's a relatively new package.
@@shirghazaycowboys too bad they nerfed the abrams to fuck that the ammo blow out panels at the back of the turret don't exist

Time flies fast. You'd be surprised.
And it would probably be sooner than that. More like in 3 years for *late* F-16 variants and 4 years for F-22 Raptor.
Can we just take a second to appreciate how beautiful that reversal was? I mean holy crap, that was sexy
This is a lazy model. One big give away is the 'take off flaps'. Lightning flaps were either up or down. No in between.
I feel like it acts like its name suggests. It comes soaring out of the clouds and strikes its enemies down like a bolt of lightning with the speed to match. So fast that your prey is unable to react.
Hey phly the lightning actually has a better turn rate than the f4
not 1000khm a plus
Yes the lightening may have a better sustained turn rate due to massive energy loss when turning however, the F4 has a way better first turn at 800kmh+ and in jet combat apart from the draken sustained turn fighting means absolutely nothing
My gran's mobility scooter has a better turn rate than the F-4.
Unnamed probably would yeah
Harvey Dole Yeah but the mig 21s are overperforming and gaijin wont let anyone see the flight manuals
Colour me surprised, gaijin introducing a plane with broken flight model, never seen before
Well its actually over performing at high altitude lol, check zetaris's video.
The Lightning is overperforming at altitude, it underperforms at low alt but not by that much
Space Tomato But underperforming at low alt.
I have this plane now at 9.7 and it's hilarious how can you boom and zoom and no one can just stop you i love it
The thing is, boom and zoom doesn't work in top tier jets because even if someone is slower than you, if you burn too much energy zooming back up, people can just nose up and fire a missile and you don't have the energy to dodge it.
The fact they gave it the Javelin treatment just adds to my want to uninstall the game...
Then uninstall and quit complaining to people who don't care
@@kennybewley2191 Hey I'm just joining everyone else who's pissed off at gaijin. So you're fine with this?

@@kieranwilliams5148 Yeah, the only people who are fine with this are most likely the pathetic part of the playerbase which are just happy to have another incredibly underperforming vehicle they can club.

The only time that I ever saw people rushing out to watch an aircraft take off, was when the last Flying Lightning in Europe, visited the airfield. (I think it was going to South Africa as the CAA wouldn't allow it to fly in the UK)
The sound of the Afterburner, alone made it an amazing aircraft to watch, eclipsing anything the Phantoms could do, and the near-vertical climb once it cleared the runway made the Harriers attempt look futile ;)
