Just to clarify, the name Ji Long SOUNDS the same as "chicken cage" in Chinese, it does not mean "chicken cage". We would call them homophones in English. . Great history and great storytelling and shows the long relationships that the French had with both the Vietnamese and the Chinese.
Thanks. I do know that. I speak Mandarin and lived in central Taiwan for 26 years in the days when you wouldn't survive with only English. It's an old slang name given the town when that's what it was, and I believe the modern name is actually a polite derivative on that. Ask a dozen people about this, and you will get a dozen answers!
The Qing were foreigners. As were the Han in Taiwan. Why do we act like Westerners are somehow different? It is like this in India, too. India was never an actual united country until the British, but large areas were ruled by the foreign, Moghuls. People give the same difference to the Turks, throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, SE Europe and North Africa. The Turks were from north of China, as were the Qing and the Moghuls, originally.
Great story Les. Really liked all the ship stuff.
excellent video Les - great detail.
Thank you kindly, and thank's for your updates on the locations.
The Hotchkiss 37mm hand cranked rotary gun was the first gun called a "pom pom".
