This answers my question Ethan thanks. I'll be going CS3 for the Coronet. CS4 is a great looking chuck but on a smaller lathe less weight to drive is valuable. Think 20-30 years of use and another span of time in the hands of the next generation. Less wear on a smaller machine. Dust is really not a problem - good maintenance should apply to all shop machines. Keep them cleaned and lubed and most will last a lifetime. Smaller machines tend to support smaller projects making chuck key type less important. Money saved buys a nice Record bowl gauge.
Can I hold the same size pieces of wood on either chuck? I have a midi lathe, and thinking of buying the sc3, but dont want to kick myself down the line for not going that extra little bit more and getting the sc4 ? 2nd question, why make the sc3 at all , when you make the sc4 ? Thanks
Hey Steve, The SC3 and SC4 chuck will lock to any spindle including your CL4. This allows the lathe to be used in reverse. The spindle on the CL4 does not lock to my knowledge but there is a flat for a spanner wrench on the spindle itself behind the chuck. I hope this helps!
