  • in this video Scroll Chuck Jaws 101 for Woodturning, I demonstrate and explain the different types of scroll chuck jaws for woodturning and the kind of projects they are designed for. My demonstration is based on a variety of Record Power jaws for the SC3 and SC4 chuck but most of the information is transferable to other chucks with similar jaws. Note that these jaws are completely interchangeable with Teknatool and Sorby Patriot chucks.

    Lucky you to get to play with so many different jaw sets. Obviously some of these interchangeable jaws wouldn't be safe on a smaller chuck like a Nova G3 even if they fit the slides. Great video with lots of useful information. Thanks for posting Mike.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You raise an interesting point. Teknatool advices against Using the 130mm jaws and Powergrip jaws on the G3 and advises against using the G3 on work that exceed a diameter of 14” and a depth of 5” with this chuck. Seems reasonable. Record Power provides no restrictions that I can find on any of the jaws on the SC3. I note that the SC3 and the SC4 use identical jaw slides and scroll ring. So wonder how much capacity difference there really is. So the issue is not really the jaws but the size of the work. If your work was less than 14x5, I see no problem with using these larger jaws on the G3 or SC3 for that matter.

I already understood the use of the various standard sizes, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm, etc. But your explanation of the specialty jaws like the pin jaws and spigot jaws was very enlightening. It was also very interesting to know which brands are compatible with my Nova chucks. And based on your comments I probably have jaw sets I don't need and there are some I could use that I don't have. Thanks for the great tutorial.

    Thanks Mike. Very useful and informative. I only started woodturning in January (Had a lathe and tools & accessories for a 60th birthday present), and I bought a chuck package from Rutlands (I am in the UK) which came with several of the types of jaws you demonstrated. I hadn't yet found a use for the pin jaws - I hadn't thought of using them for reverse turning boxes. Though I've only made one box so far (from Oak).
    Incidentally, that chuck from Rutland is also apparently compatible with the Record Power jaws. And while it isn't as big a name as Record Power or Robert Sorby, it still seems pretty so;id so far.

    Mike -- Thanks for the run down of the jaws available from Record Power. Like you, I'm a fan of their chucks. I also want to second what you said about the potential quality issues with no-name chucks. Soon after I started turning, I bought a Vicmarc chuck (no concern with quality there!) with several jaws. Soon thereafter thought I'd buy another chuck because I'd tired of switching between jaws. So, rather than buy another Vicmarc, I bought a cheapie from PSI. At first, I was pleased. I thought I'd saved a ton of money and it was doing everything my Vicmarc did, even if it felt a little rough around the edges.
    About the third or fourth time I used the PSI chuck, I couldn't get my blank to center properly. The blank seemed loose in the chuck, even though I'd tightened it several times. Upon close examination, I noticed that one of the jaws was not in contact with the wood. It had bent backwards. Removing the blank from the chuck, I was able to bend the metal of the jaw with pressure from my thumb! Yes, I'd say there was a material difference in quality!

    Hi!
    Are You sure You need the dovetail when You use a so deep spigot on the 100 mm jaws?
    The dovetail is parallel with the serrations.
    My thought is to use the dovetail as normal on a shorter spigot.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good catch. No, the dovetail on the inside is only for a blank with a short tenon, typical of a bowl. No dovetail is needed for a blank like I showed that has a long tenon. The long tenon and the interior jaw serrations would make for a strong hold on this type of blank, typical of a blank when doing a large vase or hollow form.

    Great overview
    Shortly after buying my first lathe (since replaced), I purchased the PSI 'Utility' chuck. This is a fairly inexpensive tommy-bar design that comes with three sets of jaws - pin jaws, 35mm jaws, and Cole jaws - and a woodwork screw. I later added 100mm jaws (that I rarely use). It's a good, basic chuck that works well.
    BUT to reinforce the point you made - that's as far as I can go. Other than pen jaws, PSI doesn't offer any other jaw sets for their chucks, and of course, their 'C' chuck design isn't compatible with any of the competitors. In fact, the 100mm jaws that I bought are no longer available., nor is the step center insert that I never got around to buying.
    So if had known then what I know now - - - but doesn't that apply to lots of things!

    Great video Mike. Some very good information here. Have been thinking off adding a chuck or two to my Nova Supernova 2 and G3 and since my Nova jaws will work on the Record chucks I think that would be perfect. Also don’t the Record chucks operate Righty tighty, lefty loosey? If so that would fix the only thing I don’t like about the Nova chucks, the backward tightening and loosening for us stateside... Also at 12:59 you have two tenoned blanks that appear to have spalting on them. Is the spalting a concern for someone like me with severe allergies. The last time I was in your fair state visiting family I got some large pecan blanks from some downed trees from one of their storm damaged trees and two of them have developed spalting. Also do you keep/store your larger pieces outside covered or uncovered or do you keep them inside? Sorry for all the questions Mike....
    Ron

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, RP chucks are rightie titie. Straight from Dr Seri Robinson who has a PHd in spalting, wood dust is a problem. Spores from spalting not so. I keep my large wood outdoors covered and off the ground. Don't have room inside except for cut blanks for spindle work. Bowl blanks are kept in log form until needed.

      I am not familiar witha wsc 1oo scroll chuck. Normally the manufacturer offers a spare screws kit that could be purchased where you bought the chuck. You can go to a specialty fastener or industrial supplier for screws like Fastenal but you would need to measure the length and determine the thread size, usually metric. You might search the manufacturers instructions for the screw size. Google it if you do not have it.

    Hi Mike. I’m stopped at 6 minutes because it’s over my head as a dead beginner. When you say, these are on an SC4, I say, what’s that? Is a chuck two pieces? Why are we using a chuck and not centers.

      The issues is not the size of the jaws but the size of the project. If you are using them to turn boxes, for example, no problem. But most folks would get those jaws for turning large platters or bowls that would be too much for that size chuck.

      Sorry, I don't understadn what you are trying to say. These were mostly Record Power jaws as stated in the video.

    Sorry Mike if didn’t understand what I was saying. Highland tell me to call the one 800 number for record power and I call the one 800 number and they was very rude and even got smart. And then tell me I just like to complaining. I don’t want anything from them I’m just saying whoever answers the phone needs to be fired.

    I'm sorry, but very disappointed. Focus way more on generalities and promo for Record.

      Thanks for sharing your opinion, Kim. I can't please everyone on every video. This one had better than my average likes and watch time for my videos so I am not unhappy with it.

    This is less a Chuck Jaws 101, put more a punt for Record Jaws.
