I'm a 54 yo Rush fan. I love listening to people react to Rush and get to know the band. Jay Rah, I think you have the most insightful reactions I've heard. You recognize the great musicianship and things like the time signature changes as well as the depth of the lyrics. I'm guessing you're a musician? God Bless
Only upside to this pandemic, people are discovering Rush. I honestly believe,..whenever you may discover Rush in your life, you really do “Level up” as a human.
One of the deepest songs of all time. About how we all live in our own bubbles, and we are all just so tiny compared to our country, world, galaxy, galaxies, and so on..... And how all things in life have a natural course. It's so easy to be distracted by synthetic things and people, losing sight of gratitude, primarily, for just 'being' - being alive in this time, for being just a microcosim .. This songs story sort of parallels Dr Seuss" Horton Hears a Who... We are just microcosms living where we do, not realizing we are living in an elephants ear, completely unaware of how insignificant we actually are in the galaxy. So glad you are back!! Thank you for your reaction.. Amazing as always
YESSSSS!!! First time back, AND with Rush Natural Science!!! This is why a soo love this channel, and why your the only person ever that i donated to via go fund me!
I will never forget, in 2003, standing in the 5th row, some 20 feet away from the best live band ever, when I heard them start this song. My arms fell limply to my sides as I gazed up a little at the stage lights. I murmured to myself, "Natural Science..." and floated away for the next 10 minutes.
Welcome back YO! Can’t express how glad I am that you’re checking out Neil’s lyrics - they will always blow you away, and are (to me) fully half the Rush experience because you’ll LEARN something from every piece. And, you surely *get* this song. Notice part 3 is the name of the album - I think it’s because those crashing waves at the end will always be here as a part of existence...be it personal or the entire universe! One of the most important things i’ve Learned from Rush, it’s to ALWAYS check out the last song on any album. Now, understanding this song, check out George Carlin’s ‘save the planet’ bit - he also points out just how insignificant we are, and how ridiculous our personal causes are in the grander scheme of things like.....TIME.
After the acoustic intro, they break into a common time 4/4 signature with that sweet guitar riff, but then they break into the odd 7/8 time signature throwing everyone off. I’d like to see someone try to dance to this song with all of those time signature changes, especially to the odd ones? This particular song is a time signature nightmare, going even/odd so many times. Only Rush does this stuff. Rush loves that 7/8 time signature. I heard an interview where they asked Geddy his favorite time signature and he quickly answered, “7/8, of course, I’m in Rush”. I loved it. Only Geddy would have an odd signature as his favorite. Jay, you really do get Rush, the time signature shifts, the complexity of the bass and drums in their syncopation and you even dig deep into the lyrics, quickly capturing the message Peart intended. I’ve watch several of your Rush reactions and they have been some of the most insightful reactions to Rush music I have seen, which is not easy. Rush’s music just overwhelms most, who become too distracted by the busy nature of the musical stunts to catch the deep messages they contain, compared to the average “my girl just dumped my ass and I’m depressed and whining about it..... la la la”, as if there isn’t more important things going on in this world; lyrics that 99% of all other music themes are based on. Not that there is anything wrong with a good heartbreak song, but when 99.9999999% of all rock songs are about that, it is refreshing to listen to some Rush, who proves there is more to sing about than whining about losing your latest girlfriend. I mean, I had serval relationships that didn’t go the distance before meeting my beloved wife of 23 years. I may have been a bit down over losing others, but certainly don’t regret not making the mistake of marrying any of them. I can’t imagine being with anyone but my wife, so life is full of relationships, isn’t that how we eventually find that right one? After losing all of my intestines in an accident, both large and small (the small intestines being the ones you can’t live without), nearly losing me twice in both operations. Then having twice been in septic shock from the TPN they fed me with in the six months I lived with no intestines and every doctor told us intestinal transplants were not possible. They were giving me 18 months to live because the TPN was also killing me, that is if an infection did kill me first from the high sugar content of the TPN. Almost died twice from sepsis bacteremia, then a fungemia causing septic shock, fevers in excess of 105.6°F and BP as low as 41/28. Only my wife, who researched until she found out there were only 6 hospitals in the world who had successfully performed intestinal transplants, so I underwent the transplant in 2010. Went pretty well, until I contracted a pseudomonas, gram negative line infection while I had no immune system. They have to kill your entire immune system for the transplant to take initially. I was in septic shock again, this time a BP as low as 35/28, the doctors did not believe possible, so they used 3 different machines and all showed 35/28. I then spent more than 2 weeks in a coma and they perforated my right lung while intubating me. The lung collapsed. The two conditions should have killed me, but somehow I refuse to die. They told my wife I would be brain damaged because of the super low BP, but somehow that didn’t happen, thankfully. I was giving the nickname “Wolverine” by nurses and doctors because of the way I kept coming back from certain death. In 2013, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, an incurable and terminal cancer of the bone marrow which was caused by the Campath chemo drug they had to use for the transplant to work. I can’t complain, because the four other intestinal recipients I met at the same hospital that year have all since died from complications from the transplant. The last died 6 years ago, but I keep going. I also had to have a bone marrow transplant 2017 because the Multiple Myeloma had reached critical levels at 23%. It is in remission at this time, but it will be back, like the Terminator. Anyway, after all that, girl friends dumping me seems pretty trivial from my past. I sure realize there is much more to rejoice in every day. The fact that my wife never once left my side throughout 14 straight months in the hospital, where we witnessed many spouses bail on their spouse at the worst time. They just couldn’t handle the strain, but my wife is still around 11 years later. That’s real love, not the shit they sing about in many songs. I don’t mean to depress people, but to uplift them. If you haven’t had to endure any such disasters in your life, be thankful and enjoy every day. Don’t take your life because someone dumped you. There always someone better out there and something better. If I haven’t lost the spirit to go on, I can’t see why anyone should.
This is my favorite Rush song. It expresses the quintessential message of nearly all Rush songs not to mention insane musicality... Natural and endemic human honesty, compassion, integrity vs the influences of manipulation through politics, religion, marketing. Calling that honesty 'endangered'. Yet this human existential drama plays out against the backdrop of the much more massive and encompassing natural forces both earthbound and galactic, that obliterate our human concerns. Our cultural and philosophic concerns are so critical to our own human existence and lifespans, yet ultimately so insignificant in the context of those natural and universal forces.
Glad to have you back!! SO excited your first video back is some RUSH!!! LOL...pausing after the time change..."I just came back...JUST came back!" STANK FACE!! Yeah man, this song really showcases their talents and skills. Such an epic tune and loved it when I saw them do it live on the Test For Echo tour. I completely agree with your statement about art, it's important to keep that philosophy alive. Great breakdown and reaction...yes, an AWESOME way to come back!! Thanks!
Welcome back Jay Rah!!! Please check out the version of this song from Rush In Rio. The crowd there was so amazing! They were singing the harmonies to a number of songs but for Natural Science, their participation emphasized the haunting undertone of the song making it, in my opinion, the best recorded impromptu collaboration between a band and the audience, definitely worth a listen. Oh, and once again, please react to "Headlong Flight"! Solos and drum fills and licks, oh my!
The cool thing about this song is that while they are obviously showcasing their skills on their instruments, the groove still prevails above all. The way you react to the song says it all! 🙂
First one back........RUSH!!!!!! Missed ya bro!!!!!!! Reactions are amazing!!!!! And knowledgeable!!!!!! Love it bro.......more Rush please. The Garden bro, Neil’s swan song
40 years ago... It still holds up. Near the top of the list of my all-time favorite songs, not to mention favorite Rush songs. For someone fairly new to Rush trying to take it all in, you did a fantastic job. Between the musical talent and the lyrics, sometimes taking in Rush is like drinking from an artistic fire hose. Well done. Great to have you back.
Welcome back!!!! I was just waiting for you to realize what was coming.. you're like oh this is so calm and Serene and then it melted your face off!! Lol!!! Geddy tears it up on this one, it's so awesome!!!
Hey Jay Rah, so glad to see you back! Love your insight and appreciation of music. Good choice to be back with Rush. Phenomenal band. Great message. Awesome reaction. Thanks.❤
Welcome back! Looking forward to big things from you and your channel! Love this song. I used to listen to it late at night when I would be going to sleep on my waterbed...(many years back)
Others have said this already, but you really did take that deeper look at the lyrics compared to any other reactions videos to this song. And (as was also said by someone else) the lyrics really are a big portion of the Rush experience. Great job bro!
Welcome back Jay. Woke up this morning and saw that you were back and with one of my favorite songs, couldn’t wait to check it out. So glad your back. Life is beautiful again my friend. 🤘🤘
As a huge Rush fan, this is great to see! I enjoy your breakdowns. And most certainly entertained by your reactions! Especially with The Master, Neil Peart!! 😆🤘
Best reaction so far...and you ACTUALLY talk about the lyrics and their meaning, as well as addressing the time changes throughout....good ear, my dude.
I love watching your Rush reactions. It's like listening to a play by play of an ass wooping during a football game. Neil going deep... Touchdown! Geddy ripping up the middle... Touchdown! Aleks busting through the defense... Touchdown! The boys sure do lay a beatdown on all musical conventions. Great review!
Probably my favorite Rush song (tough choice)! That hard riff near the beginning is in 7/8 time. One of the meanest riffs ever, imho! Glad you’re enjoying the rabbit hole, my friend!
"The most endangered species, the honest man. Will still survive annihilation." So many of Neil's lyrics are so prophetic. Loving your Rush reactions, dude!
What a great way for you to return with a banger from Rush. This is one of the best progressive songs for both the music and the lyrics. Their ability to change time signatures so smoothly and still keep the listener's ear is just brilliant. To me basically, Neil is saying nature will do it"s thing and we must learn to coexist and do our part tohelp perserve the planet .
Welcome back and great reaction! This is high on my list of favorite Rush songs, both lyrically and musically. Glad you picked up that point for the “art as expression, not as market campaigns” line. Art certainly has its place as a product to be consumed and used in advertising, but its primal and primary function is to move and inspire us, to improve our quality of life. It’s sad to see people who don’t get that, and their only connection to art of any kind is as a product for empty consumption, then on to the next disposable experience that may bring momentary amusement, but not the kind of joy taking the time to immerse yourself in art can deliver to your soul.
I do love your reactions, they come across as so honest and human. With that in mind, I would be very interested in your reaction to Rush’s “Nobody’s Hero,” off of their Counterparts albums. It has an excellent official video that you could watch on your own time but I don’t know if you could do a public reaction to it that wouldn’t get blocked. But the lyric video would be fine. It’s Rush at their most human & humane. Just keep up the good work. I subscribed for a reason.…
YEAH! My all time #1 favorite Rush song! EPIC and tight jam. This song tore your face off, didn't it Jay Rah? LOVE THAT! I consider Permanent Waves to be a perfect Rush album, and this is how they closed the album.
Jay Rah now you understand why Rush fans are forever. This band never gave into corporate greed. They made the music they wanted, true integrity. There will never be a group like Rush.
Another lyric video you should check out from rush is losing it. It’s the only time in the career that they had a guest musician play along with them with an electric violin. The solo between him and Alex is beautiful and the lyrics will make you weep. Another song from them that had a guest vocalist is Time stand still. A good song but more popish.
8:14 Only in a Rush song can a badass guitar solo reach it's peak and you will hear someone say "Oh, this bass!". lol I so get that. Alex was KILLIN' IT, but so was Geddy & Neil. You have great ears for Rush.
Oh sure, about humanity, but it’s about how life and species evolve, come, and go. The transitions represent part of the evolution, some returning, others not heard again. It’s introspection *and* observation. 🖤🤎🧡🤎🖤
The album, Permanent Waves, was released in January 1980 (yes, FORTY years ago!). Rush decided to forgo the concept album with side-long songs for shorter, just as powerful tunes. The album opens with the punch in the face masterpiece, "The Spirit of Radio." The band chose songs to open albums to set a mood. Listen to the 18 studio albums with Neil Peart and which songs they chose. To me, they usually are the "best" songs! Fact check me! Anyway, Permanent Waves had almost been completed and Rush reserved time at the end for a song to be written in the studio. That song was "Natural Science." What a way to bookend an album!! "The Spirit of Radio" to open and "Natural Science" to close! Sheer prog rock perfection! 💜💜💜
Sir. I really appreciate your voyage with Rush.. it reminds me of myself 35 years ago. You have a very sensitive ears, a feel for complex retheme and a sharp mind while analyzing the art of Rush. It is a pleasure watching your videos. Regards from Israel...
Jay I am so happy you are back my friend, you were sorely missed. Can’t wait to see more reactions which are always great, still hoping that you will someday get to Rush Headlong flight. Stay safe my friend.
Now THAT is how you end an album! I bought it on the day of release, back in the first week of January '80, as a thirteen year old kid. To start with the now iconic 'The Spirit Of Radio', and finish with this progressive masterpiece blew my young mind, and set me up with a love affair with Rush that is still with me to this present day! Such sweet memories baby! 👌
10K SOON! been with you since 1K and that really wasn't too long ago. Keep up the great work. 20K to 50 to 100 soon enough. I know you don't like the lyric breakdown but doing just a little bit of research on the band the album or song really does make your fans happy to see when you get the aha moment and understand what we understand versus asking a bunch of questions for the comment section thanks again
YES MAN! First off, so happy to have you back 🙏 second, can’t believe you actually did Natural Science. Easily one of my favorites. I think your ready to go on the ultimate Rush journey and react to both books of Cygnus X-1
First of all, great to see you back! Second, many consider this to be Rush's magnum opus and an epic track from prog rock in general. Third, great reaction! Given this song's status among Rush fans, it's no surprise you were impressed with their time signature and tempo changes, their chord progressions, Geddy's bass and synth play, Neil's masterwork lyrically and percussion-wise, Alex's smoking hot solo...basically everything about the song. Cheers!
With Neil's passing, we lost someone so special. All I can say, enjoy the musical journey RUSH has given us! And never forget it. The most endangered species 'The honest man' Thus the world we live today! RIP Neil, your wisdom and lyrical genius is deeply missed. My heart aches!
I'M BACK IN EFFECT...LIVE AND DIRECT. God bless everybody. So good to be back. Love.
I'm glad you're back. Another great react to the all time band, in my humble opinion. Thank you Jay! Deep insight.....love it.
Good news!! Excited to see what is coming up soon!
Spot on as always, missed you r reactions, but like a fine wine you only get better with age...Welcome back!
Glad to see you, you were missed!✌
Awesome to see ya back!
Not gonna lie, it gave me a chance to go back through and catch up since day one. 😉
Bout ~100 subs away from 10K..SWEET ✌
Permanent waves is a masterpiece. Start to finish.
I play it more than Moving Pictures.
Gotta say I'm not a big fan of Different Strings
@@briancolton6125 I personally think it blows Moving Pictures away. Its more complex from a musician's point of view. They hit the apex here
Actually all of Rush's music from 2112 to Grace Under Pressure was a masterpiece.
@@TeeDOG6 i stop at Signals. Terry Brown years to me was their masterpieces. Fly By Night-Signals
I'm a 54 yo Rush fan. I love listening to people react to Rush and get to know the band. Jay Rah, I think you have the most insightful reactions I've heard. Only upside to this pandemic, people are discovering Rush. I honestly believe,..whenever you may discover Rush in your life, you really do “Level up” as a human.
Yes...
#Facts 🤷🏾♀️
Nicely put. If only humanity could see the world as they do..."it would surely serve us well"!!!
"Level up as a human."
Well said!
Absolutely right! I would call it intellectual growth. With Rush, one doesn't need literary tomes for an IQ growth!
40 years and still... goosebumps!
😆 Riiiiiight?!? 😊🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
Natural science is possibly my favorite song of all time. Such a freaking masterpiece.
"In their own image, their world is fashioned. No wonder they don't understand!" My favorite rush lyric of all time.
So glad you are back!! Thank you for your reaction.. Amazing as always
Just last week the Biden government banned 7 Dr. Seuss books 📚 lol, now it’s Pepe le pew. Great analogy is what I wanted to say.
Love LV !! :) ♥
YESSSSS!!! First time back, AND with Rush Natural Science!!! This is why a soo love this channel, and why your the only person ever that i donated to via go fund me!
Codes ENT second, for me. A worthwhile cause indeed.
I love watching first time reaction videos to RUSH. Makes me almost wish I hadn't heard this song 8,934 times prior... almost... RIP Neil...
The most endangered species....an honest man. God help us...
Welcome back my friend, to the show that never ends...

One of the best, honest "natural" reaction Ive seen... seeing it live is a blast of energy
Rush is the healthiest drug on earth
Im so glad you did a lyric video and paid attention to the lyrics. This is my all time favorite RUSH song. The lyrics get in my head and move me.
One of their most amazing tunes. You rock, Jay!

hey welcome back and with my favorite band too. love Rush and I love you reactions and commentary. deuces back at ya
Probably my favorite song by Rush. It's got everything in it that I love. Time signature changes, deep lyrics, heavy guitar riffs...
Here's everything Geddy played on Permanent Waves as far as keyboards: Oberheim polyphonic; OB-1; Mini Moog; and Taurus pedal synthesizers
and that was just before breakfast lol
The cool thing about this song is that while they are obviously showcasing their skills on their instruments, the groove still prevails above all. The way you react to the song says it all! 🙂
Heeeeeeee's baaaaack!! So great to see you live and direct...great to start my week off with you and some Rush!!!
Welcome back! A perfect reaction to a great composition.
Great reaction! One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands.

Hey Jay Rah, so glad to see you back! Love your insight and appreciation of music. Good choice to be back with Rush. Phenomenal band. Great message. Awesome reaction. Thanks.❤

So glad to see you back. Great song to come back to!!
Awesome Jay Rah! Really enjoyed your reaction to this wonderful song!
So cool to welcome a new Rush fan! Love your break downs keep 🎸
Glad to see ya!
Great way to come back, Jay!! With some kick ass Rush!! Glad your back, dude!! Missed ya!!Great song!!
This reaction just made me a fan of yours! Welcome to the RUSH family! Also look into Neil's books they are excellent! Thanks 😊
Welcome back man....keep on rollin!!
Love what you do....Rush is awesome and so are you!!
OMG this is so campy and yet so honest. I love it! You have the best reaction vids. Subscribed!
Green screen and the headphones of truth! That's going to be a good combo! 💯😀
Epic song and reaction. You get it!!
8:00 During this time, Geddy favored an Oberheim OBX and a Mini Moog. In the 80's he'd incorporate a Yamaha DX7, a Roland Jupiter, and a PPG Wave.
LOVE THAT! I consider Permanent Waves to be a perfect Rush album, and this is how they closed the album.
this album has a sweet little song called "entre nous"
check out THOSE lyrics that will show you something about what these guys got going on upstairs
roman14032 I love the lyricism in Entre Nous.
Beautiful lyrics about what a healthy romantic relationship should be
Welcome back!!! I had forgotten what a banger natural science is.
It's always satisfying to see someone GET IT. Good on you, man.
Thank you Jay. R.I.P. Neal . I have loved them since 1980. So glad they are showing love to the new.
Welcome Back🤘🏻😎
Yeah boyyyeee time to get back to it!
Welcome back and continue the journey.
Glad you're back, man. That Febreze is essential, especially here in our house with two dogs and two cats...and some herb! Hahahaha.....
Great reaction... it’s a tough song to break down lyrically but I think you did it justice! Cause and effect!!!
You're right....the drums are INSANE on this track, especially at the beginning of the instrumental.
8:14 Only in a Rush song can a badass guitar solo reach it's peak and you will hear someone say "Oh, this bass!". lol
I so get that.
Glad you are back! Rush Rules.
The most endangered species 'The honest man'
Thus the world we live today!
RIP Neil, your wisdom and lyrical genius is deeply missed.
My heart aches!
First time I heard Rush music in a commercial, first thing in my head was, “art as expression....”. LOL. But hey, musicians gotta eat too.
Glad you back dog. We missed your knowledgeable reactions. Hope you react to this one hit wonder, Children Of The Sun by Billy Thorpe.😝
Great suggestion...that was such an amazing song
Absolutely!
It’s 7/8,baby. You really are vibing off this the way I was as 12yr old beginner drummer. Stank face on lock!
