    For setting up a bridge using Wi-Fi, which actually works:
    sudo nmcli connection add type wifi slave-type bridge con-name 'Bridge Connection 1' ifname insert-wifi-name-here master bridge0 ssid 'Insert Your SSID Here'
    The nmcli's response will be:
    Connection 'Bridge Connection 1' (insert-device-mac-address-or-uuid-here) successfully added

    At 23:12, the "sudo nmcli connection up bridge 0", my system (Fedora / Plasma-KDE spin), returns "Connection successfully activated (controller waiting for ports)" From here "sudo nmcli device status" returns bridge 0 state of connecting (getting IP configuration). Is this a port that needs to be opened? I'm not sure what to do from here.

    Thanks for this explanation, i've been setting up windows vm for the past week, and some of the info that you provided was new so i'm also gonna apply it there. The thing that i can't get to work properly yet, is networking. The VM heavily relies on being accessible to other devices in the LAN, so it's pretty important. I need the host OS to have the static ip of 192.168.1.11, and the guest OS to either being DHCP in range of 192.168.1.100-199(that's what my router's default range), or being static ip of something like 192.168.1.80
    I've tried lots of things and have been encountering several issues like no internet on the VM, but most often after lots of tries:
    1) Host loses it's static ip, and becomes DHCP random address(i guess that's the part of thing that it becomes the slave of bridge0?).
    2) Host preserves it's static ip, VM retains it(trying to be as close as possible, it reports as being 192.168.1.112 inside the VM, i guess that's the closest possible free accessible IP of 192.168.1.11), internet inside the VM works, i can access it from other devices, and that's pretty much what i've settled onto, but it feels wrong because it's completely broken.
    I wish i just could make a virtual network inside the virt-manager with the address of 192.168.1.0/24, but it says it's already used by enp3s0.

      Hi, I'm sorry I couldn't see your comment because TH-cam had blocked it for some "blocked words." Probably because of the IP addresses you entered.
      Regarding the static IP address on your host for the network bridge, please see my blog post on how to set it.

      As for the static IP address on your Windows VM, you can check this link:

    question for the void:
    context:
    running ubuntu server distro (24.04.01 LTS) on a rog strix g14 gaming laptop, my first attempt went like this;
    installed everything, got networking running, bolted ubuntu noble on top (i really wanted to make VMs and what not through a GUI cuz im lazy)... when it was time to connect to openstack's/microstack's browser UI i kept getting an error that said something to the effect of "user cache not configured/missing". after trying to find the fix (everything i found was super old.... like EXACT problem with an supposedly easy fix --the commands and files mentioned either didnt work at all or not even referencing the appropriate files. ) I decided to try a different approach --installing dependents and software for 2-3 other VM services...same story as before, when i tried to use their 'front end' the cracks formed. getting to the point that boot took a little longer than id like since it was Initializing everything at launch unnecessarily (I think). Not sure but... I think they were messing with each other. I then decided to do a fresh wipe and start from scratch --i plan on following this vid to a tee (i admit though, I was going to commit to LXD/LXC rather... just not super sure how it works so im quite suggestible clearly lol)
    my question:
    i want to make sure im understanding what 'we' are about to do:
    setting up a VM service to make containers for more than one thing first and foremost --rather than wasting resources the way i did it?
    setting up a VM/VE first, once its good to go, I *could* make containers for whatever right?
    since my criteria for success is two fold, number one, make a modded minecraft server running out of my fancy laptop (i mean it can play red dead 2 on decent graphic settings).
    have the server on a guest OS with minecraft-centric settings that, once setup, I could "log into" and do what little admin stuff needed. preferably through a GUI if I bother to set up one/necessary to install one.
    NUMBER 2 (and this is a big one --if I have enough resources (which im not sure)): set up another VM or two, namely a "daily driver". A simple distro to mess around with -idk like ubuntu noble, mint, fedora, yadd yadda. assuming resources are there to do so, maybe a simple proxy server for my windows computer (my main computer). maybe a media server/ wanna be NAS.
    Am i misunderstanding what linux can do or is what im describing a sort of 'go figure' for linux?

    I have seen many tutorials on how to setup KVM/QEMU on Linux, and this is by far the best!
    One question tho: Shouldn't the grub2-mkconfig -o argument be equal to "/boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg" in case of UEFI based Fedora? And in my fedora /boot/grub2/grub.cfg is not a symlink to the real file.
    We would also love to see you guys make a video on how to use SELinux to protect KVM/QEMU VMs against exploits.

      Do not use the command 'grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg'. Since Fedora 34, there have been changes.
      More: fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/UnifyGrubConfig
      Regarding SELinux, it has already been taken care of. You can search for SELinux sVirt.

    Hi, thanks a lot for your videos, they really helped me a lot. I have a question, I have configured a Network Bridge (as you indicate in your page "How do I properly install KVM on Linux?"), it works fine on the VMs, also on the Host. I use Ubuntu 24.04 as operating system, but I have a problem in the Top Panel, the Network Icon does not appear, after configuring the Network Bridge, how can I make it appear again, without deleting the Network Bridge?

    • @SysGuides
      @SysGuides  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, when you configure a bridge, the network icon disappears. This is a common issue. However, there will be no problems in network traffic.

    Sadly, I got one issue, I do NOT use grub at all, but relay on System-D boot ...
    Ehhh where do I then add that "iommu=pt" ?????
    I am relative new into Linux, and have used grub boot before, but went system-d boot instead, since I feel it is fit my needs better (I don't use dual boot, nor Winblows anymore)
    Anyone here might be able to help me?

    I'm trying to configure the same on the laptop which is connected to network over Wi-Fi. Seems like it requires additional steps to configure a bridge interface to work with a wireless adapter.

      You cannot bridge a wifi connection due to protocol limitations. What you can do is use macvtap interface, map it to your wife and attach it in the virtual machine.

      If you have a desktop interface, use 'Virtual Machine Manager'.
      If you don't have a desktop, you can install virtual machines using the 'virt-install' tool via serial console. th-cam.com/video/sDJWJIJGwRI/w-d-xo.html
      You can also install "cockpit" to install virtual machines via a web interface.

      And it did @@SysGuides , thanks a lot, still though in the end I decided to restart from scratch, reinstalled the whole system, II had already altered SELinux tags and created other rules that would never make sense. I just finished again the whole walk through and I can almost swear by this guide and your username from now on to all things KVM/QEMU, now it all make sense why it never was actually working ok for me, thanks a lot again, and hope to see more content of yours on the near feature.

    • @SysGuides
      @SysGuides  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad it all worked out in the end. I'm sorry to hear you'll have to reinstall the entire system. Nevertheless, in the future, if you ever mess with SELinux contexts and want to reset to default, you can do the following:
      Open the file /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts.local and remove any contexts that have been added by you.
      Run the following command to relabel the SELinux contexts and repair them on the next boot:
      $ sudo fixfiles onboot
      And reboot.
      Hopefully, it will resolve any SELinux contexts issues.
