    Bruce is a master, I don't know of anyone who could sing as high with as much power as him in the 1980's, a true legend!

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but a couple of these "Then" clips sound like studio recordings overdubbing live footage, which is a tough standard to match live. Bruce is definitely one of the few singers who stood the test of time.

    • @mordor666
      @mordor666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I felt that too. Number Of The Beast was save studio IMHO.

    • @michellewhaley3489
      @michellewhaley3489 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was thinking and hearing the same thing. That scream was definitely from the studio album

    • @Groteskfull
      @Groteskfull 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I noticed that too. The audio on summa those "then" clips are straight off the albums.

    • @chaosapiant
      @chaosapiant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The first THEN clip is 100% live, but the second two looked like they were from the music videos, which both had live clips but were clearly the studio performance. The better test for Run to the Hills and Number of the Beast, would be to compare his voice from the Beast Over Hammersmith show and then the clips now. Or hell, even the clips from the newest Legacy of the Beast tour. Bruce is still absolutely killing it.

      The copyright law here on TH-cam is strict, even though what we are doing is Fair Use. So it’s not easy for Mr. Tamplin to get whatever he wants to use. He doesn’t wanna get in trouble with TH-cam and the publishing companies. So respect and understand him

    Bruce's singing style has changed with age but that attitude and tenacity hasn't.
    Still sings from the soul...
    And that's why he is one of the best ever!
    Mad respect for him..
    What can he not do!!

    Bruce is still a beast. Tell me how many singers can really sing at that level in their sixties? Completely live and no backtracking. The real deal. Thanks for another cool video Ken

  • @kimberlygrissom2315

  • @thiagosammett
    @thiagosammett 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Bruce's singing has aged like a fine wine. Yes, maybe he lacks some of that power from his prime, but he compensates that with a more refined technique, which makes his singing more constant. I think it's all about knowing yourself and your own voice, and Bruce definitely does. He was a beast then and he is a beast now.

  • @ChristineBroughton

    Being 60 I think it is sad that the singers we loved so much back in the 80’s that people have so many mean comments. I think it is amazing that they still entertain us and keep on doing what they love. Many of them still sound great. We all get old it is part of life. 🥰😀 Thanks Ken for giving them deserved recognition 👍

    • @jenniferlynn3537
      @jenniferlynn3537 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Christine - I’m not far behind you in age, and must admit I have some sympathy for those making “mean” comments about vocalists - not for their appearance, but for the deterioration of their voices WHEN their loss of vocal quality is directly related to physical deterioration that could have been prevented, or their sound improved with strength training and vocal exercises. I think that’s the reason for a lot of the harsh criticism. Imagine you’re a hard-core fan for decades who finally scraped together enough for tickets to see a group, only to find you’ve wasted that money. I’ve said before that it’s really a matter of respecting your fans - and not abusing the privilege of performing before a live audience - when these are the people who’ve bankrolled your lifestyle.

      Yes, but some should quit if they can't sing anymore. We saw Paul Rogers a couple of years ago and he's still got it at almost 70 when we saw him.

    Actually just saw him speak on his solo tour last night. No one can match Bruce with all the amazing things he's done. The guy overcame throat cancer and still sounds that amazing! Truly one of the best.

    Hello! I attended the last Rock In Rio (2019) and Bruce's performance was considered the best of all the band's performances in Brazil! I thought... Am I dreaming? There was almost no room to stand! The show was wonderful! The audience was totally excited. I lost my voice from singing so much! I wish long life to the band members and keep cheering everyone who enjoys heavy metal!🤘🤘🤘

    This is the one I’ve been waiting for! I’ve been a Maiden fan since the early 80s. Bruce is absolutely amazing - as a singer, performer and writer. In my non-expert opinion, he doesn’t seem to hold the notes quite as long as he used to. Still, he is on key and you know he’s giving 100% everytime he hits the stage. He had some health issues including throat cancer, and worked through them to remain one of the greatest metal vocalists in history. Forty plus years later he’s still at the top of his game. And that says nothing about all he’s accomplished outside the band. Love this series Ken! Keep up the great work!!

    Bruce is amazing. Correct me if I am wrong I don't believe he ever had formal vocal training either. Such a great natural vocal tone, which I find peaked when he recorded "Accident of Birth", in my view his best solo effort, and much better than many Maiden records.

    • @crisjaramillo9450
      @crisjaramillo9450 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In his biography (What Does This Button Do?) he mentions that he received singing lessons from an ex-girlfriend who had studied at a prestigious school for young ladies where he learned vocal technique. During his time away from Maiden he learned about his own voice by trying new things and after he was cancer free he started vocal rehab which helped him regain his confidence as a singer and with his voice.

  • @ca82MHz
    @ca82MHz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    He's amazing. He had tongue cancer and a rather big dip some 5-6 years ago, but man - did he make a comeback! He's past his 60's, a high pitch singer with high speed lyrics with a shitload of words in it and still delivers really good! Add a lot of running around too! The guy is in hell of a shape! 🙂 (Vince Neil could use him as a PT, cause he hasn't lost his voice, just his shape! Sorry Vince. 🤭)

    He was at his best by far on the first tour with them (Number of the Beast), but I'd have to say since he rejoined the band he sounds really good live! I used to think he got arrogant or something once he was "in" but I didn't realize how long they had been touring before they recorded Live After Death, and another thing I didn't realize is they were playing so fast live it was turning these vocally melodic songs into rap songs basically lol..... Their guitarist Adrian Smith even said that's part of why he left the band after Seventh Son tour... he said they had these really great songs and they were just choking the life outta them by playing them way too fast. Just my $0.02 lol.... I'm not a fanboy but Maiden is the one band I know A LOT about, I even got to know a few of the original members and talk to them occasionally! Terry Wapram is an awesome guitar player, and I've talked gear and recording with him a few times..... His band is called Buffalo Fish out of London if anyone is interested in checking them out!😉

      Beast and Peace of Mind were great tours for Bruce, but you're absolutely right, I have no idea why they decided to play songs so fast just to play fast.

    Bruce is a excellent example of what can be accomplished when you dedicate yourself and get fit, stay fit. His stamina and vocal endurance stands out. I think he's even better now than he was early on. He has honed his skills very well. Hard worker. SMART WORKER. TY Ken. This man deserves much more attention than he gets for his vocals and work ethic. The guy beat Cancer. I think it was tongue or throat cancer. When u factor that in, and then see what he sounds like today, the man is special. Like you said, an enigma.

    I just love that man! Bruce is amazing!.
    I saw him last night in Albany, NY for his spoken word tour. He was funny and brilliant and very interesting. He sang Revelations acapella and it was amazing!
    As far as the screams, we all love those howls and banshee wails. But for me, he, like Robert Plant, gives me goosebumps with just their regular singing. And the voice has a richness to it as they aged.

    I saw Maiden in 2019 and my expectations were kinda low, just because of his age and the difficulty of the material.
    But he delivered, and his stage energy and showmanship was second to none. Was it the 27 year old Bruce? No but it was very good.

    The "Number of the Beast" audio and subsequent scream was off the studio track, incidentally. I vehemently agree with you in that he has maintained a lot of his prowess. That was largely due in part of him being an athlete, refrained from smoking and drug use. That's something that all too many singers failed at doing. I've seen them 46 times and he's usually "on". Age is his only nemesis.

    I’ve seen Maiden several times over the years, starting in ‘84 and most recently in 2019.
    For the 2019 show, I went with my husband, our four kids and my oldest son’s girlfriend. After the show, I commented to my husband that Bruce was slowing down slightly (and I *meant* “slightly”). My two teenagers, who were seeing them for the first time, said “That was slowing down?!?” in unison. If you’ve seen them enough times, you can see where he’s putting a bit more emphasis on the theatrics, and a bit less of the straight up high energy running around.
    The man is a powerhouse. I personally prefer his younger voice, but not by much. My husband prefers his more mature voice-again, not by much. I have never failed to enjoy them live and Bruce has always delivered, vocally. (The weakest vocal performance was probably Book of Souls, but it was still fantastic.)
    He had a hip replacement last year. It will be interesting to see what his onstage physicality is like going forward.

    The only real difference I hear and see is the fact the volume in his high end screams aren't as loud as they were some 33 - 42 years back . To be Frank his falsetto screams were never his strong suit in my humble opinion . His control and endurance in maintaining that upper midrange is Bruce's strongest vocal attribute . He definitely has that down just as well as ever .

    Great session; getting in better physical shape surely helps! I know it is outside the world of rock music, but it might be fun to look at Tony Bennet who was still singing well in his 90s. I recall reading an interview with Tony about ten years ago and he said he was still studying voice, working to keep his voice working well. He sounded pretty good last summer in his final show with Lady Gaga. Tony was 95 (suffering from Alzheimer's) and still belting out the tunes...

    He’s my favorite metal singer. Like 99% of all singers, he doesn’t have the range like he did in his prime - the 80’s or even early 90’s…. But he can still bring it and better than the vast majority of singers from his era at this age.

    I’m so happy that in the Then/Now series you’re also critiquing singers who’ve held up exceptionally well over time, as this provides an important element of gauging the observations made of those who’ve let their voices go. Dickinson’s voice is in the range of Axl Rose’s, and coming on his heels, this provides an excellent comparison of their respective qualities and strengths. To my ear, Dickinson was always the more skilled vocalist - and I believe it’s proved by how his voice has aged. Thanks again!

    Indeed,he's holding up quite well.
    Like we say in Texas,
    "I'm not as good as I once was but I'm good once as I ever was".😆
    But seriously, the clips you show of Bruce back then were a higher quality of audio.
    I can tell he still sounds good lately but the newer audio production is lacking.
    Thankyou.

    Love this series! Inspiring for us "mature" singers!
    Ken, I had covid over a month ago and still have a nagging cough and I need to sing pretty soon! Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks again for the series!

    Ken, I absolutely agree, Bruce is still in top form, no pitch problems whatsoever and the tone of his voice only got better with time. I only wish Maidens came up with another record as brilliant as Brave New World in future, to compliment his mature voice with complex, beautiful misic compositions.

    Bruce shows that you don't necessarily lose your range while aging. I've seen even some vocal coach (or claims to be 🤷‍♂️) saying that "it's evident, you will lose range and can't sing as high in you 50's" or something like that. I immediately thought that it doesn't seem to so for all at least. And Ken has quite a range too, so...
    I guess it's partly genetics, but you can definitely prevent it with your choices (nutrition, smoking, alcohol, rest etc etc....). And technique of course, Bruce wouldn't be doing that after his throat cancer if he didn't have a solid foundation to build on.

      His upper register got damaged partially in the 1985 tour .
      The Ian gillanish screams he did in albums , till 1984, he doesn't since.
      In 1990 he did but in his pre maiden style , so much more distorted.

      @Nissardpertugiu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But his basic tone still the same .
      Which is great
      However , i really don't like the operatic over used Clean singing in a one trick pony thing , it lacks texture, where he was excellent in the hard edged sound .
      I mean the voice he had back in No prayer is something i like as much as Paul.

      A lot of these rock and metal singers have shown they can still hit those crazy notes even in their 50s,60s and even 70s

    I like his taste in how he approaches the songs post-2000 or so. Feels like there's more thought behind the words, which I guess you'd expect.

    Bruce is my #1. I loved the stuff in the 80's and especially his solo work. Even to this day, he's still killing it. The new album is excellent. In concert, he's untouchable and still hitting the notes. I do prefer his singing in the 2000's and onwards.

    Back in ‘99 during the “reunion” tour, I caught a clip of him singing the Run To The Hills chorus the same way he did it on the 1982 recording. He NEVER sang that live back in the day. He’d always sing the “run FOR your life” under the note, even on the Beast tour. So, there was an America Online chat with the band and I asked him “how’d you get your voice sounding better than ever?”… He said something like “Thanks, the check is in the mail”. And then skirted around the answer…and over the last 20 years of interviews since then, I still haven’t seen him directly address what he did to get himself together. His autobiography does have a chapter on his early days and struggles to build his voice. But yes, he’s an enigma to me too.
