- SAILING TO FERNANDO DE NORONHA--Pitstop for Sailors Crossing the Atlantic to Brazil
On our three-week Atlantic Crossing from Mindelo, Cape Verde, Africa to Cabedelo, Brazil, South America, we decided to take a quick pit stop at the gorgeous, remote island of Fernando de Noronha, a volcanic archepelago located about 350 km off Brazil’s northeast coast. We heard many wonderful things about this island from other sailors so we wanted to check it out for ourselves!
Today the economy of Fernando de Noronha is mostly dependent on the tourists that visit the archipelago. There are restrictions to the number of tourists allowed on the island to prevent destruction of the delicate natural balance. Scientists visit the island frequently to study the flora and fauna.
The area was named a World Heritage Site in 2001 due to its importance as a feeding ground for many different aquatic species, its large dolphin population, and as protection for the endangered animals like the hawksbill turtle.
For sailors, it’s an expensive, but worthwhile stop. The anchorage fees are significant since you also must pay a national park fee. The anchorage is open to the Atlantic’s big swells, making it uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe if you don’t have a reliable anchoring system.
