A smoothed rear end on these cars always looks great. For body filler as long as you knocked down the high spots it should probably be fine, though I am not nearly as good at body work as some. It was a humbling experience on my car
If you don't lay epoxy primer over the bare metal and just bog over the metal you will have the bog absorb moisture which will cause it to rust. Last thing you want is to put that much work into rust repairs and ruin it.
I really love this project! I like the way you do things. Maybe you want to fill the welded areas with tin (lead) in stead of body filler. It will be much better as body filler has a different expansion coefficient.
Coming along nicely! Regarding the colour, I'm no expert but I believe you're correct. My 240z was factory gold (920 gold to be exact). They spray the entire car, interior and exterior in the factory colour, including over the sound deadening and underseal. Mine had been repainted 3 times, twice in two shades of blue and a dark green. Yours being a 280z I believe the factory colour would be 638 black metallic.
I’m doing the same thing, but mine is a bit rougher. Rust holes, and very thin. I’m going to look for a replacement panel to just cut the old stuff out. I doubt I have the fabrication skills to make one.
Kfvintagejdm.com and resurrectedclassics.com make a bunch of panels. You'd be surprised what you can learn to do though, I had barely done anything with sheet metal before this.
@@BLOKgarage I guess I remembered wrong myself. There's a sticker near the factory tag that should tell you assuming its still there. One is on the driver door jamb and the other is in the engine bay on the strut tower or near it. i.pinimg.com/474x/53/e1/95/53e195e834d4fa9535ec3702b48c2540--paint-colours-vin.jpg
Black paint was only offered on the 78z. About 1500 s30 bodies were black and called the Black Pearl. They had special dealer decal and pinstripe packages. You can google all the info. No way to tell if it was an original Black Pearl except by paint code decal on radiator support. Think code is 938? Not sure if it would make your Z more valuable as only the paint color is unique if still black.
For the algorithm
That looks like a replacement panel the way the holes don't line up
I didn't see any evidence of it being replaced anywhere else. Appeared factory.
Definitely not a replacement panel, replacement panels for that area have only been availlable since ~3 years ago.
Awesome work as usual! Keep it up!
Appreciate it!

I've definitely got some learning to do on the upcoming bodywork.
Coming together nicely, Just epoxy prime before bog to avoid future rust

Whole car is getting epoxied.

I gotta look into that anyway for the roof panel. It had lead on the front and rear pillars and I'll need to do something to replace it.
Very nice
Thanks

Definitely makes sense
It's looking good and all, but i can't wait to hear it rip by my house. 😁
Eventually!

Is the factory tag with the color code missing?
Would that be on the aluminum tag under the hood? I haven't looked at that in a year+ at this point so I don't remember.

Ok I remember both of those being there. I'll dig them out and see what I can find.
Yes they did 280z in 1978
Good work brother! I just got my apex engineered front and rear the other day!
Mine is going on soon!
I may be wrong but I don't think I have ever seen one in black from factory
I watched the video and paid real close attention … went into the garage … snapped my fingers … and nothin’ … nada … zilch. What am I doing wrong?
You gotta sprinkle in some of the youtube magic for it to work

I don't think that label was on the radiator support when I blew the car apart unfortunately.
What gauge of metal are you using for the body???? 😊
I've used 18 gauge for everything.
👍
Fiberglass filler in the indentions will be strong and finish with plastic filler if needed.
Good to know, I have a lot to learn about body work for sure.
