sweet memories. it wasn’t popular in our arcade (everybody played dragon’s lair), so i got to play it for so long and so often that i learned to beat it. the third time i beat it, a crowd formed behind me as i neared the end. when i correctly timed the last move and victory was mine, i coolly grabbed my soda and strolled away as the crowd gawked at the ending animation scenes. i’d dropped a ton of quarters into that game, but that moment was worth it. thanks for posting!
This is one of the all time great games. I used to ride my moped to a bowling alley to play this. I loved these games. Dragon's Lair I & II, and Space Ace were good but this was rare and special.
I played this game so much at the arcade that I could beat it with one life every single time after a while, no joke. I wonder how many quarters total I fed that dang machine.
I used to play this game when I was a kid in the arcade. Now I own this Lupin video on DVD from which the game is based on! And watching the DVD is much easier than playing the game!
@BarzOnTheWindow1 - Those are the sort of stories I like to hear. They called it the Golden Age of Videogames for a reason. There was something magical about it all. Thanks for sharing the memories.
Man, this was my favorite game as a kid. My dad literally had to drag me out the arcade every time we went to the mall. What's worse...the game was faulty...once you got beyond the Ninjas...it would start to malfunction (black screen, bad disc, etc) But I never could get enough of this game. Thanks for posting.
I finished this game way back in the 80's when it was in the Campwood's Sweet Shop in Ossining, NY. It was 50 cents per game and I swear it must have cost me $100.00 to get everything memorized. For the times, it was groundbreaking and highly addictive. Not sure why it popped in my head this evening but I'm glad I was able to find some footage. Brings back some memories.
I was watching a Studio Ghibli movie and a car chase came on that looked strangely familiar, and I instinctively remembered the joystick controls, without even remembering the video game...! Almost 30 years ago, and I hadn't even thought of the game in at least close to that. So weird, pulling things from the back of your mind like that..so I started to look for the game without even remembering the game's name..and HERE IT IS!! Awesome! I LOVED THIS GAME. High Score at Putt Putt NASA 1
Good grief! I'm taken back to any Saturday night in the mid to early 80's, a fiver worth in quarters, the low lighting, the sensory overload of sounds, the shady characters (who I paid little to no attention to) and a red shlushy at my side!! -GREAT MEMORIES!! Thanx for the upload!!!
I loved this game along with Space Ace. This one had a totally different feel to it. Spent tons of hard earned quarters back then. You didn't reach my favourite part though, after they drive away, he knocks one of the ninjas off and casually peels the severed fingers off the door frame!
Cool, thanks for posting. I used to play this when I would visit my sister in Manhattan in the mid-80s. I must have spent a ton of money on it, but I eventually made it to the end. The ninjas were anxiety-inducing. I now realize this was my first official exposure to Anime (aside from snowy Speed Racer eps on the UHF band).
What a treat to watch this, last time I saw this I was probably about 13 or years old. I still dont know what the guys are saying in the beginning of the game - 'Chams?' . I liked this game a lot more than dragons lair but I could never get past the part that you got to.
I used to finish that game when I was a teenager.. My favorite laserdic game. I used to finish all of these games (including dragon's Lair I and II + space ace). It seem difficulte when u see it but I remember it so easy when I used to play :)
used to obssess over this game as a kid. such a quirky, primitve thing, but i couldn't get enough of it. all the laser-disc games were my shit for a year or two there.
@benjamz64 - That's great, man. Thanks for sharing the memories. You're right about this being rare and special. I only remember this game being at one place when I was a kid. It was as this really small arcade in Gloucester (MA) at the Brown's Mall. It wasn't there for very long, and I wasn't very good at it. That didn't stop me from trying to play it from time to time. If it wasn't for this game being at that one place, it would have escaped me completely.
I loved this game. I learned that if you watched the bottom it said "Stick" so you had to push the joystick in a certain direction. If it said "Action" you were supposed to push hands or feet. But you could push the hands and feet button at the same time and it would work. The ninjas were the hardest part, but if you got past it the rest was easy.
LOVED this game, the C-store across the street from my house had it for the longest time. A cinematic animation originally, but it became a video game that plays like a cinematic animation. A concept way ahead of its time, over 10 years before Tomb Raider hit the scene, and 24 years before the first Uncharted.
I played this so often as a teenager at the arcade that I could write all the moves / button presses in their correct order from memory. If I remember correctly, the highest possible score you could achieve was 865 000. You had to intentionally die at the correct spot twice and finish with your last life.
@suspekt29 - Yes. I use Daphne for this too. I start the Daphne Loader right off the CD rom instead of the hard drive, which allows it to start easily. I don't know why that works, but it does. I have that procedure illustrated in another video that I posted here on TH-cam. I encourage you to check it out.
It's a toss-up between my two favorite quotes in this game: "Once again, I have cut a worthless object." and "Some days you just don't wanna get out of bed!"
@Yugi40 - I think the latest in the game that I have is where the clock hands close on the villain. That footage is in one of my other vids, the one that says 'later scenes'. I'm pretty sure that's not the ending, though. -Mike
@johnalang - I'm glad I'm not the only one who never finished the game. To this day, this video reflects about as far as I've ever gotten in this game. Regardless of that, I still enjoy playing it from time to time.
I love the fact that this is essentially a Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro video game version, with some of The Secret of Mamo. The dub could have been better though, lol.
Man I used to play the crap outta this game as a child!! I think the footage is from two different episodes or movies of Lupin the 3rd. Mystery of Mamo, and somthing about a castle in the other episode. It's just a bunch of spliced together sequences from those cartoons, made into a QTE game. I never beat it though. Took all my quarters!! lol...!
Yes. This is a really great game. I still have yet to get past the ninjas. There's a lot of fast moves that you have to make when you get to that far into the game. I can never seem to pull it off. I do still enjoy playing the game, though. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I've got mad respect for anyone who can finish this game. It takes better reflexes than I've got to make it to the end. It's really too bad that we have to rely on emulators and/or actual game cabinets to play this game. Stern should just license it to someone who will at least make a smooth running CD rom release of it. Thanks for checking in. I appreciate the fact that there are those who like this gameplay video I did.
@mikeferr107 It's not a problem. Being both a huge gamer and anime fan, I love finding out interesting info like this and sharing it. Here's some more trivia. There are two instances where the original Japanese voices can still be heard: when "Cliff" enters "Clarissa"'s chambers, you can hear Yasuo Yamada, voice of Lupin, say "Kurarisu", or "Clarisse". And when "Count Drago"'s men fire on "Cliff", you can hear the voice of Count Cagliostro say "Ute", or "Fire".
@jerzjt - We've all had seller's remorse about something at one time or another. At least you can say that you once had one. How many people can say that? Thanks for watching and checking in.
I loved this game. Could only play it at the movie theater in the game section..lol Wish they would put this on a dvd disk like they did for Dragon's lair
I always wanted to try this game. I've tried running Daphne and its a pain in the ass so I gave up. I wonder if Digital Leisure will release this one of these days.
FUN FACT: This game is based on the anime series Lupin the Third, which is in turn based on the manga of the same name by artist Monkey Punch. This game specifically bases itself off of the films Castle of Cagliostro (which is actually directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Spirited Away fame) and Secret of Mamo.
@suspekt29 - The discs I got had quite a few games for it. Mine were easy to deal with. I created a folder named 'Daphne' on my C (hard) drive, then moved all the files from the discs into that folder. The only game starting problem I had was with Cliff. You could start the Daphne loader from the CD you got with your set to get the game to start. You could also make a disc from the CD you got to run Daphne Loader from. That can work too.
The movie this arcade game takes its video from is called *the castle of cagliostro* its a fantastic lupin III movie and my personal favorite Hayao Miyazaki movies :D, Not to long ago this movie got a BEAUTIFUL Blu Ray release *I got mine from amazon*
Fun Fact: They wanted to put the game in the very bluray release you have, but they couldn't find the original contracts of the game so they had to scrap that feature.
I remember finding a $10 bill under my parents couch cushions one weekend, riding my bike all the way to the mall & playing the SHIT out of this game!! This & Dragon's Lair were great.
My aging reflexes are what the problem is. Knowing the moves is good. Being able to do them quickly enough is another thing entirely. I still enjoy playing the game, though.
@mikeferr107 How many games did you receive from the package? I also had problems loading it from the hard drive. It kept scanning and installing sound files for every game I had and it pissed me off because it was 800MB per game aside from gathering all the roms and video files which was around 2GB per 3 games. You said you loaded it off the CD rom, does that mean if I burned the necessary files to CD it would work the same as your set?
Hi. Yes. As far as I know, the footage for this game came from two different Lupin III movies. It's a pain to get the emulator working to play this game, but I still like to play it once in a while. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@Yugi40 - Quite honestly, I can't imagine that I'll ever be able to finish this game. Someone had the complete footage of this game posted on TH-cam in the past. It was taken down, unfortunately.
Here's another piece... Despite the high cost of the animation, a deluge of similar laserdisc video games followed Dragon's Lair because of its immense popularity. To cut costs, several companies simply hacked together scenes from several Japanese anime movies that were obscure in America at the time, creating games like Cliff Hanger (Hayao Miyazaki's Castle of Cagliostro & Mystery of Mamo) and Bega's Battle (Harmagedon), both of which were released roughly around the same time as Dragon's Lair
Yea, there were very few people who could do this game till the end. I managed a few times. You play this on a laptop? Where can I get this game from? I got an old laptop, would love to relive this game.
@johnalang - Yes. I'm with you. I have been able to finish Dragon's Lair, but not without continues. I never finished Space Ace, Dragon's Lair II, or any of those other ones. I guess I'm just not the world's top gamer. It's still fun to try, though.
sorry to sound like a dummy, I went to the site you have listed. How do I exactly get the game? I used to spend all my money when I was a teenager on this game, both the dragonslairs, Space Ace and Cobra Commander. There was another CDRom game called Thayers quest but it wasnt at the arcade that long. If you could email me the way to get these games, you will be my hero!
@LeotheTiger1776 - Yes. I have seen those clips on here. It's a great game, but a hard game..at least for me. I played this more recently, and didn't even make it to the sewer. I'm WAY out of practice. Also, I took a shot at Dragon's Lair 2..and..nevermind. Let's just say it was embarrassing. lol.
"Hey Samurai??" "Once again, I cut a worthless object???" Are you supposed to be able to follow the storyline? Or is it just a sequence of random action scenes?
There's no way in hell that I would have been able to afford to play that game. There's no indicators to help you with the actions. :P It would have ate all my quarters for sure.
sweet memories. it wasn’t popular in our arcade (everybody played dragon’s lair), so i got to play it for so long and so often that i learned to beat it.

i’d dropped a ton of quarters into that game, but that moment was worth it.
thanks for posting!
Can we pretend you put on some shades, said something clever and then the game blew up behind you as you walked away?
This is one of the all time great games. I used to ride my moped to a bowling alley to play this. I loved these games. Dragon's Lair I & II, and Space Ace were good but this was rare and special.

Forget Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, THIS was the game to eat my quarters lol. Decades later I find myself still obsessed with it lol.
Love it !! As the Samuri said "once again I`ve cut worhtless object". Great job.
His name is Goemon. Maybe watch some Lupin in your life. 💀
@BarzOnTheWindow1 - You're welcome. Thanks for sharing your arcade memories in the process. I love that.
@SonnyGTA - Yeah. Back in the day, I did too. Thank God for home versions that we can enjoy as adults, so we give more tries to it.
I played this so often as a teenager at the arcade that I could write all the moves / button presses in their correct order from memory. amazingly I remember I beat this game back in the days of APB, Gauntlet and Street Fighter 1. Wait till you get to the clock tower.
It's a toss-up between my two favorite quotes in this game:
"Once again, I have cut a worthless object."
and
"Some days you just don't wanna get out of bed!"
@Bignum Wait. You remember the Cloverleaf Mini-Golf? I remember going there once before it shut down. Now, it's a Hess gas station.
@Yugi40 - I think the latest in the game that I have is where the clock hands close on the villain. That footage is in one of my other vids, the one that says 'later scenes'. I'm pretty sure that's not the ending, though. -Mike

So glad to find out about this Lupin in 2017. Just wanted to watch the game. Now giving Japanime a try!

Ur damn good at this i could never get past the ninjas that wuz in the arcade never played it at home i would like 2!
@jerzjt - We've all had seller's remorse about something at one time or another. At least you can say that you once had one. How many people can say that? Thanks for watching and checking in.
Oh this game brings back memories :-)
I used to play this, nice find
I loved this game. Could only play it at the movie theater in the game section..lol Wish they would put this on a dvd disk like they did for Dragon's lair

I remember finding a $10 bill under my parents couch cushions one weekend, riding my bike all the way to the mall & playing the SHIT out of this game!! This & Dragon's Lair were great.
@mikeferr107 Yeah, I checked there. If you get the hang of the game, then will you upload the ending?
@Tapewormz - Yes. It certainly ate it's share of mine back in the day.
One of the few video games I ever beat!
I totally believe that! I'll make sure I see it then...!
This game ROCKED!
My aging reflexes are what the problem is. Knowing the moves is good. Being able to do them quickly enough is another thing entirely. I still enjoy playing the game, though.
That clock tower took me ages to figure out. Almost as long as the ninjas.
@mikeferr107 How many games did you receive from the package? I also had problems loading it from the hard drive. @johnalang especially the battle with the ninjas which try to kill Cliff/Lupin
Wow! Classic!
@Yugi40 - Quite honestly, I can't imagine that I'll ever be able to finish this game. Someone had the complete footage of this game posted on TH-cam in the past. It was taken down, unfortunately.

the Ninja room was the toughest sequence from what I remember ..
Do you have the ending of the Cliff Hanger Arcade Laser Disc Game?
What was with those hurdles in the beginning?
I used to finish that game in the 80's
you ever made it to the end??
lol'd at the dramatic "oh nou"
@mikeferr107 I never made it past the casino. However, I did solve "Dragon's Lair" several times.
wow this is very old :) 32 year ago
Yea, there were very few people who could do this game till the end. I managed a few times.
You play this on a laptop? Where can I get this game from? I got an old laptop, would love to relive this game.
@johnalang - Yes. I'm with you. I have been able to finish Dragon's Lair, but not without continues. I never finished Space Ace, Dragon's Lair II, or any of those other ones. I guess I'm just not the world's top gamer. It's still fun to try, though.
Not in the dub that was used for this game, though--only the Manga Entertainment dub which is available on DVD and Netflix and whatnot.
Lupin the 3rd is Cliff hanger
They can't call it Lupin the 3rd. For some reson.
It's called, Copyright!
MEMORIES!!!
What are the keyboard inputs for hands and feet?
Stick is the arrow keys right?
It appears you are playing this at your house. is this game available for home play. i remember playing this at the arcade and was able to finish it.
@mikeferr107 NO SIR! -Thank YOU for the post!!
What Emulator are you using?
@Pennst411 yeah, that's a pain in the ass. i gave up on actually playing afterwards and just watched the rest of it
I need this game. HELP!
sorry to sound like a dummy, I went to the site you have listed.
I got this on my HyperSpin arcade machine ;)
Best and quickest way to spend 50 cent in the 80s
@LeotheTiger1776 - Yes. I have seen those clips on here. It's a great game, but a hard game..at least for me. I played this more recently, and didn't even make it to the sewer. I'm WAY out of practice. Also, I took a shot at Dragon's Lair 2..and..nevermind. Let's just say it was embarrassing. lol.
I lol'd at Jigen's voice. XD
"Hey Samurai??" "Once again, I cut a worthless object???"
Are you supposed to be able to follow the storyline? Or is it just a sequence of random action scenes?
There's no way in hell that I would have been able to afford to play that game. There's no indicators to help you with the actions. :P It would have ate all my quarters for sure.
I could never get past the ninjas!
I want my quarters back.
I'm 12, almost 13 and I beat this game. How awesome is that?!
Castle of Cagliostro is the other. It is a Miyazaki film and it is awesome.
Better than Dragon's Lair! Great GAME!
1: DON'T SPEAK IT'S NAME! 2: Anything's better than that game!
Have you watched a Lupin movie?
Perche non riesco a trovare una rom di questo gioco che funzionni?
@strezz23 - Agreed!
have you ever beaten this game ?
i know this movie it's Lupin the 3rd and the castle of cagliostro by Hayao miyazaki!
The hardest part was trying to fight the ninjas.
holy shit this is lupin the third!!!!
Where can I get this game????
James Colver It comes prepackaged with Daphne emulator, which works great.
@MasterEiji - lol. No. I wish!
You know you can just buy a blu ray of Lupin the third and watch it. 💀
Incidentally, the title character is voiced by David Hayter, AKA SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!
I could never get past the ninjas too!
