  • Baldwin 590 arrives at Minffordd Yard and is then tested on the WHR mainline. It then goes on to haul its inaugural train on the WHHR.

After 81 long years, a Baldwin 10-12-D finally rides the rails of the Welsh Highland Railway once again! It may not be the original, but I hope this new 590 will prove to be a very welcome asset to the line. Fantastic job to everyone involved in the restoration!

Last year I visited the Vale of Rhiedol Railway's shed and workshops in Aberystwyth, which coincided with my visit to the Talyllyn Railway for their Awdry Extravaganza weekend. I saw this engine still in the throes of being overhauled, and I am thrilled to see the end result. They've done a commendable job on it and the finish is stunning. Regards, Samuel Farris.

It's so awesome to see 590 back on the WHR/WHHR! Especially cool to see an extended cab baldwin in the modern day as well.

Great to see a reincarnation of the original 590 on the WHR after all these years. It’s been the dream of many people for a very long time, and what a glorious restoration.👍👍
Would I be correct in thinking that Baldwin 608 is on the FR at the moment? I know it was photographed at Beddgelert with Russell fairly recently.

Very, very nice indeed. I've always been fond of these Baldwin ROD's ( the Glyn Valley engine is my particular favourite) so it's a treat to see one back in action. Let's hope the Statfold Barn engine will follow suite. So is this technically a replica, using some original parts, or simply a new build ROD that's additional to the list, like the new P2s? I hope she rides more comfortably than the originals did, anyway.

It's an original Baldwin, originally numbered 794 owned by the Imperial War Museum. After their plans for the loco fell through they transferred it to the WHHR who have restored it as number 590

This begs the question of how the original '590' arrived on the WHR in the 1920s. Via the Cambrian?

Will 590 get air brakes too or is the WHHR planning to convert to vacuum brakes?

I see that the Baldwins were built for the War Department in 1916 and 17. What is 590’s story please?

Built for war service and then sold into industrial service, much of which was in India it was brought to the UK for restoration.

and in a few more years we'll have Moel Tryfan as well, that will just leave Beddgelert missing

Nice loco. But its confined to shuffling bug boxes from one field to the next !!!! Or is there any planned use for it on the main WHR line, as I doubt its powerful enough to haul the regular service trains ?

It will be on the WHR mainline during the WHR100 gala in June. Check websites for details.

So Stanley is back. Just don’t ride rough and come off the rails.
