As far as the damp stuff, the problem here in the midwest, is in the winter time people come in with snowy footwear and leave them on rugs, etc. Then when someone cleans, they sweep the wet rug, either by not thinking or not caring
To test bristles, I lay a screw driver across the rug plate. If you line the bristled up perpendicular to the screw driver and they brush against it by a good 1/8, they're good. 1/16 means it's about time for an adjustment or re-bristle.
