Huge fan here from the start..America never really got Queen and Freddie..they worked it hard and had a steady ascent in the seventies and had huge success with The Game 1980.I was at the last Madison Square Garden shows in 1982 and the US audience was more subdued than others and too busy throwing Bic razors at Freddie. Then they sought of became classic rock in the late eighties.Worldwide though they were huge...The Works and A kind of Magic topped the charts in 20 European countries.Fantastic band and hopefully Sony will push it to new audiences.

Agree with the phone caller...after steady success in the seventies and huge with The Game I went into Tower Records in NYC wondering where my favourite band had gone ...wasn't a backlash against UK bands as Tears For Fears Wham and Genesis had big albums there but The Works was in the classic rock section.Hot Space wasn't 'Rock' enough for America but still some great tracks on it but musically yes The Works and Magic are great.

And of course Highlander was somewhat overshadowed by Top Gun in 1986.....

The answer is that yes....Queen were and remain massive globally. The late 70s may have been their hey day in the US but they were MASSIVE in the rest of the world in the 1980s.

After the Under Pressure hit in 1981'Queen pretty much fell of the face of the earth. You would hear a new song here and there but it was no big deal. Thier last album Innuendo started getting heavy radio play all of a sudden in 1991. I suppose a lot of music insiders knew Freddie was dying. They had a few songs I liked during that long stretch

Massive everywhere else. Very diverse back catalogue which gives them great appeal. I reckon Sony sees USA as a new market for them

Still sold 50 million albums in the states and Greatest Hits heading for 10 million..but in Europe and UK sold far more than even the Beatles

@@adams7405 yep still sold a heap but they basically tapped out of USA with The Works and their earliest albums didn’t really get a showing. Also many songs we know as a hidden bangers such as It’s Late were massively edited upon release.. So there is huge potential. I also reckon SONY would be keen to introduce a WE WILl ROCK YOU/WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS/ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST tax for every sports match

Queen stopped touring the US due to the controversy surrounding the I Want To Break Free video which saw the band in drag as an homage to the popular soap opera Coronation Street. MTV weren't happy about the video who didn't get that it was a joke. So they banned it, that led Freddie to say fuck this, we ain't touring the States again until we have another hit out there.
You guys should delve further into their catalogue, I'm not crazy about their 80's work but the 70s stuff was fantastic. So heavy too, check out the albums Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack especially. A lot of the deeper cuts are far more interesting than the hits I reckon.

Something of a counter to Chris & Wendel's discussion of how worthless (cash wise) music is, they were on to this issue in 2014. That it has no value. The top stuff is worth 1.27BN. Otherwise, CMS is correct - youtube pays only $500 per 250,000 plays. Worse than spotify, but no one complains about youtube. 1M plays youtube pays just $2,000. There are services that may pay even less.
