112 as a bari sax player that started in september is a nightmare. yesterday i finally was able to play through that whole part w/o stopping bcs i was confused :,)
A piece of my heart will always go to this song. My high school band played it at NYSSMA and it sounded as professional as this. we worked so hard and got the highest rating. it sounded epic, i loved playing this song.
My elementary/middle school commissioned this piece back in 2000, and we were the first band in the world to play it! Its inspired by our school's name, Challenger, in honor of the space shuttle catastrophe and the astronauts who died.
Such a proud and ultimate song. This piece is nothing if not played by a strong band. Especially brass. Love the power in it. I hope our 8th Grade band can take on this piece right. :)
Soyee Choi Dude, I'm honestly a little offended. My band has 19 people, 5 clarinets, 2 saxophones, 3 flutes, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 1 tuba, occasionally a baritone, and 3-4 percussionists. Personally, we may be miniscule, but we've got this song in the bag, and we've got people filling in parts everywhere, like for part of it we've got some clarinets filling in tenor sax and that oboe solo, trombones are playing bassoon parts, and we've got one percussionist playing snare, bongos, and windchimes in this song. We kill it every time too. And our brass line is 5-6 people.
I played the snare drum and Congo to this song, and covered for the timpani guy if he wasn't around. Best years of my life. Oh how this song brings back memories of the school band..
This piece was commissioned for my middle school band in 1997 when I was a 7th grader at Challenger Middle School in Huntsville, Alabama. Our wonderful director, Tom Mitchell, has since passed away. I'd love to dedicate this to him.
I got this music in 8th grade, my director said she wanted to give us a "challange" But she hardly gave us a chance to even try! She said she wanted to challange us and we messed up twice and she took the music away forever. I've never gotten to play or hear what this whole song sounded like until today!!!! T^T
I remember playing this in high school book, I was probably a sophomore when we played it. And thinking it was the coolest piece ever. That was before I discovered all the AMAZING orchestral music, like Beethoven, Dvorak, and Mahler.
omg i played in the Southern Alberta Hounor Band with this song! it was my FAVORITE!!! i played trombone, i rested during 3/4 of the song.. but it was fun to listen to!!!
Our seniors chose this song for us to play at senior graduation so we get to play it then. And it gives a great part for the bassoons to play which is something we normally don't get. It's amazing. I love this song.
I remember playing this my senior year of high school in wind ensemble as part of a combined band performance. I loved it, but felt bad cause I had to tell a freshman that I was taking the oboe solo cause I was a senior and 1st chair in WE.
Played this piece my senior year. I played contralto clarinet for this one. It was pretty cool. It's so addictingly mystical and it quickly grew into one of my favorites!
Im new to band and I play in the percussion section, currently learning 6 instruments lol, mrs. Conway got this stuck in my head so I had to come find it
I dont think you really understand the awesomeness of this song unless you play Frech Horn :) got to play the absolutely gorgeous solo at the beginning!!!
We are playing this for our spring concert, and my band director made the first(me) and second chair clarinets play that part at 124, and it was so hard to learn!
i love the switch to 5/4... our band doesn't have an oboe, and i'm assuming that's what has that melody, but we have the bass clarinet playing that groove and the conga solo so it sounds alright
This song was written for my band director (Tom Mitchell) and middle school (Challenger Middle School in Huntsville, Alabama). I got to play it for the world premiere.
As a horn player, i always dreamed of getting a solo, or even a melody. Now in this song, I have more than i want XD
Same here!!!😬
fr tho lmao
in my band I saw this piece and was astounded by the amount of F horn (and I got one of the solos)
hahah yes!!
As a tuba player I'm actually not forgot about in this piece. I love it.
112 is amazing.
Best part in the entire song (at 3:19)
Pastasauce agreed! it’s the best part
112 will forever be my favorite as a tuba player

My favorite piece by Mr. Robert Smith. Played it in highschool myself as the lead clarinet. Beautiful and truly memorable!
I play alto saxophone and it’s fun playing the same three notes on loop for what feels like eternity ✌️💀

same situation as me rn 😭 except we have actual altos but i dont sit next to them so they might as well not be there lmao
Played this my senior year of high school... what fun it was playing the bassoon part on the contra-alto clarinet!!!
3:26 the oboe solo
I love the 5/4 part.
my favorite composer of all time, i wish that my band teacher would let us play this in school

the mayonnaise part is hard. :(
Which part is that? XD the middle part with Clarinets/woodwind or the trumpet hits?
No, it's the mayonnaise part.
@@maricampari3970 geez do you not know of mayonnaise?
How about the horse radish part? I thought that part was hard. :(
I have a question?
Yes?
Is mayonnaise an instrument?

Wow xD! We're playing this in our Highschool band and we've yet to go this fast!
Since y'all commenting about the baritone part, I'd just like to say I have to play it on a bass clarinet, and let me tell ya, that's hard.
yuuup, I heard that. This song killed me even as a non-smoking high-schooler.
Sis I wish my band director let us play that part(fellow bass clarinet)
Wow
You mean 3:22? That's the star bass clarinet part. Sounds like a James Bond 007 bass line.
We are playing this song in band and we are only a middle school band. Its not a very hard piece, but its awesom to play.
Great song playing this in a marching band show
