    I’m so sorry for you. I’ve had the same experience myself growing tomatoes, and it is heartbreaking. Gardening is hard, especially you’re learning and new at it. Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s been a horrible year, and everyone is struggling.

      My tomatoes did better than most. I am actually proud of the successes. I was crying over the endless rain, not my gardening. There is no way I'm giving up on that :)

    It is so heartbreaking after so much work.I had a hard year too. In my case it was a grass hopper infestation. They killed everything they could. No more mint, parsley, several bushes. I tried getting rid of them the safe way, but they won. I hope your tomatoes are saved.

      @@RootsandCalluses I think I might get some tomatoes. I think the grasshoppers don’t enjoy the smell of the plants.

    Dear Roots and Calluses
    I had a some experience with the tomatoes for 2-3 years.( We living in Czech Republic, it's mean the most of rain falling during the summer season).
    Until,I saw a video about a family,who also living in Germany, build a trellis with a transparent roof(durchscheinendes Wellblech(plastick)).
    I growing tomatoes already 3 years without this disease.
    I don't know, that, you already throw out the plants, but if not yet,there is another thing to heal them...
    There's a German author ( Christiane Maute) who healing the plants with homeopathy,she using Natrium Shulphuricum C 30 potential homeopatic balls for this disease... I tried it,and it worked great...😊
    I hope, I could help to you 😊
    Happy Gardening ❤

      Thanks for the advice. I can't add structures, as I only have one more season on this plot but translucent roofing is definitely something I would do if I was staying... Or a second greenhouse.
      I do not believe in homeopathy, so that is not an option for me. But I appreciate the input.

    Oh that was sad to see the tomatoes go but I’m glad for the ones that survived. I’ve finished my freezer cooking for the month and am taking a short break to fold laundry so I’m watching while I work. I think I’m almost caught up on all your videos. 😀 I left a bit of dishes to be washed but I needed to sit. I may have to make the grape syrup and banana bread or cake with fresh ground wheat berries another day. I haven’t decided which to make. I have an abundance of over ripe bananas but the wheat berries arrived a few days ago and I’m eager to make a cake with them. Have you tried wheat berries?

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have not done anything with wheat berries but I started a small field of winter wheat, so hopefully, I will have some to play with then. My local farm sells them, though, so I could try them earlier. Any recommendation for recipes?

    Too much in some places, not enough in others. The rain is always stress anymore.
    I liked your music, but I also appreciate the lack. Tomato canning has catalyzed into pumpkin canning? super sucks though. Not as satisfying as a summer tomato sandwich. I'm glad you will still have something with beta carotene and vitamin C :( Maybe some resistant seeds from any tomatoes that survive? I hope you get some! Thank you for your honesty; gardens go t--s up sometimes and it can be hard to remember that at home when we only see insta worthy ones.

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Climate change will continue to make the extreme weathers worse. Middle grounds are going to be less and less common. So, we will all need to adapt and prepare.
      The music cost me 140 bucks per year, so I tried without and actually liked the result.
      Yeah, we will definitely have pumpkins. The greenhouse at least will also bring tomatoes. But I cling to hope that they will recover. In the meantime, I will have to make do without or buy tomatoes from the local farms with bigger greenhouses.
      I will definitely save the seeds of any survivors. But I would have done that either way.
      Luckily, I am not on instagram, so the comparison is less vivid. The YT channels I watch are struggling as much as I am, be it of drought or rain overdose.

    Feel free to send some of that rain here to the Southern California desert. Trimming plants sometimes causes browning because of stress on the plant. I too have a lot of external noise around my property and the same type of "pests", bugs, that appeared on your tomatoes appeared on one of my plants. After my second season of growth I too was so frustrated I decided to quit. Then, I got the will to keep going and now I am trying new techniques in my third season. Regenerative agricultural methods are the processes of re-establishing soil health. I think a more buoyant soil will soak up more rain and keep your plants from flooding in the rainy times. A way to create buoyant soil is mulching. Mulch breaks down over time and creates a layer of compost on the soil. Micro-biological life will thrive creating porousness in the soil. Insect life will thrive and aid that process too. The porous soil will allow water to soak up in the soil instead of sitting on the surface level. The documentary "Back to Eden" explains regenerative agriculture. th-cam.com/video/6rPPUmStKQ4/w-d-xo.html

      Oh, I wish I could! I do regenerative agriculture on the plot :) And there is no way I am giving up on gardening. "I can't do this anymore" referred to the abnormal amounts of rainfall we've had in the last 2 years. Like my tomatoes, I really need the rain to stop. I'll check out the documentary :) Thanks!

    Sorry to hear about all those future pizza’s that will go tomatoless. Did you come up with a strategy for next year? Maybe planing them further apart and pruning/thinning them from the start? Would the tomato’s have been better of in a greenhouse protected from the rain? Too bad greenhouses are so expensive.

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, yes, so many pizzas lying on the ground there! Yes, if the next year is as wet, I'll trim them from the start and train 1-3 stems per plant up trellises. I'll also give them more room. My greenhouse tomatoes are looking good. It was the endless rain, and the greenhouse protects from that. I only have a small greenhouse, though, so most things grow outside.

    Hi Kate. I love your video's when theres music too, but when theres talking it is more peaceful without. This video was uploaded 2 weeks ago so I'm anxious to see the newer ones to see how the tomatoes are doing. Can I ask a favor? Would it be possible for you to show a really close up shot of what the blight looks like on the leaves? I just cut down what was a super healthy tomato plant because it was making me nervous with the yellow and brown spots that were developing. Then I wondered if it was blight for sure. Thank you 😊

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The music was there before I did voice overs. I did not narrate my early videos, so I decided on music. I kept reusing the same ten songs by the same band but there was no way to get a license for just those songs, so I paid for all of Epidemic Sound. I wasn't comfortable spending this much on music licensing, so I tried using natural background sounds instead, and actually preferred it in many places. I now have to pay a lot more attention to background noise but it is worth it. If I am in the kitchen, I might hold off on turning on the dishwasher until after filming, for example. In the garden, I have little influence on the surroundings, so if there are a lot of trucks, tractors, or planes, I can't change that. We'll see how that works out ;)
      I am no expert but here's what helped me: ignore the leaves. Look at the stems. If there are brown spots on the stems, you likely have blight. The spots are oval or other round shapes (like the spots on a cow) and often cover large parts of the stem. It rarely ever hurts to remove yellow leaves from plants. Yes, you are opening up a wound on the plant where things could get in but that wound is very temporary and the leave rotting away on the plant might have similar issues. I remove yellowing leaves if I have my shears at hand or they come off easy. I will try to get a closer take for you. But keep in mind that my videos are about 2 weeks behind, so you might not see it for a while if I don't happen to have the footage already. If you need a look sooner, I can email you a photo if you are okay with that.

      @RootsandCalluses Thank you for your advice! I have read a lot about blight but have never seen recommendations on checking the stems. I tried trimming the yellow leaves but within 2 days there was double the amount of yellow leaves with brown spots. Because there are 2 healthy *touch wood) tomato plants about 15 feet away I took it right out. I will check the stems if it starts on any other plants.

    not sure if this helps, but oregano is anti-fungal. would planting it between tomato plants (and give enough spacing) be beneficial in controlling the spores? seems like there's early blight and late blight. maybe a raised bed can also help? and have an arch fence between to raised beds where the vines grow on, thus providing more airflow. just throwing ideas out in case anyone wants to chime in.

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately, none of my oregano made it this year. There was supposed to be rosemary, oregano, basil, and thyme. One basil made it.
      Raised beds are a cost factor I can't afford, as I only have one more season in this garden. But I have plans for next year: single-stem trellising for maximal air flow. The string trellising worked well, though. I will probably do that again for at least some of the tomatoes. Thanks for all the input :)
