  • I get a no heat service car on a Friday night. It’s Black Friday right after Thanksgiving. I’m told the customer really wants me to get there as fast as possible they’re cold. When I arrive I find the boiler has a soft lock out. I look at the pilot assembly and it looks a little dirty. I start at the boiler it lights the pilot after a few seconds it drops the pilot out. Therefore I decide to pull out the pilot assembly and clean the flame sensor. Afterwords I fire up the boiler turns on it runs and it heats up the house. Now I have a happy customer.

I remember back 17yrs ago I learned what hard lockout and soft lockout was because of rtu commercial gas units. Soft is flame sensor or proof causing the pilot not to light after multiple tries it goes to hard lockout meaning power needs to be reset

    Lennox aka a Dunkirk.
I always check gas pressure when i have a dirty flame sensor. Also seen litter boxes and laundry detergent and fabric softener cause dirty flame sensors. Environmental issues are a known problem with flame sensors.

Soft lockout means it will try and restart after a certain amount of time.

soft lockout, controller won't respond to any call for heat until the power is cycled. the error will occur after it fails ignition a certain number of times (don't remember how many, been a while).
