Funny how your gear packages are almost identical to mine. Except instead of Sony EX3 cameras lying around I have 2 x Sony PMW-F5's I can't seem to part with. Still great cameras when paired with the Canon CN7x17 17mm-120mm PL zoom lenses. I always struggle getting rid of old gear since you never know when it might come in handy. :) Great content. Keep it up.
i loved this! really helpful seeing your whole setups, whats working for you, and what you’re planning to change going forward! good on you for taking a week off too! 🙌🏻
What a great way to keep records of receipts. I try and scan mine to the Quickbook app but I always forget to categorize them. Keeping everything on one note is brilliant! Always learning something new from Cranky Cameraman! On a side note, I was working on a narrative project at Trump Tower a few weeks ago. I was walking by all the news crews (day after assassination attempt) and just started asking random camera questions. Not surprisingly, 2 of the camermen (different big networks) are subscribers of yours. lol.
Glad the Movcam is working for you. Based on simplicity and cost I think it's a great option for the Burano. I figured out it can be mounted to the camera body a few inches back allowing for better balance on the shoulder. And yes, the Movcam dovetail plate is cheap and has the proper safety stops.
I remember seeing that EX3 in some of your border videos! It's so cool (on the business side of things) that you're still finding some use for a camera from 2008.
I like that kit list approach especially as it will appear on all your devices. It's always impressive how the oldest cameras seem to be useful for years for the risky stuff. I have 3 Canon XF300s that I call my 'crap cams' as they are the default cameras on general shoots unless I need the higher end 4k in which case I can pull out more modern cams.

A production company I worked for years ago had a bunch of EX3s. I was used to shooting on Sony XD cams but loved the EX3 for what it could do. Two of the EX3s we put Canon broadcast lenses on them. A bit front heavy but a fantastic image. The SxS cards were the only thing I hated about them.
I just got a rush design vct shoulder rig - Barebones, was designed for the crew that shot all Tony Bourdain’s food shows. Never using anything else ever again. Can’t even tell it’s on my camera.
@@Adv504 I exchanged a few emails with them to see if the rod console was adjustable to line up Arri 15mm LWS for the Burano. Didn’t get at a clear answer.
@@CrankyCameraman you mean up and down or side to side just under the front of the plate part of the shoulder rig? (I’ve seen that on a few rig systems if that’s what you mean) Short answer, no. At least I don’t think. I’ll pull out my FS7 tomorrow but it’s basically 3 parts, each is cnc aluminum, nothing more nothing less. So it seems it won’t work for you :( Its very no frills.
@@CrankyCameraman well, there are zero adjustments on their rig. I guess the charm of it but very specific to barebones users needs. It weights nothing though, trade off.
I know the FX6 is lighter and smaller, but there is one really silly other limitation between the FX9 and the FX6, the FX6 can't record XAVC-L (longgop) in 10bit, while the FX9 can (in 4k). All the while the FX3 quietly has 10 bit recording modes at the higher compression while the FX6 is stuck at XAVC -I. It's a minor thing in the grand scheme, but for any docs with a lot of interviews, wanting 10 bit in an efficient codec for post, the FX6 actually holds you back. Of course looking through the Burano's recording modes, I also don't see the same options for XAVC-L that the FX9 has. And oddly has the same limitation in the 10 bit long gop options, it can only shoot XAVC-L 8bit like the FX6, while the FX9 can shoot 10 bit in XAVC-L. So odd.. Again its really a minor issue now since storage is cheaper now, but still so odd.
I Just ordered those viewfinder extension cables for our fx6’s on a show I’m on right now we get them Wednesday can’t wait to use those. How are they holding up for you?
What's the real ROI rundown between your cameras? Would you lose work if you shot everything on a FX9? Could you actually get away with only using a FX6?
What is that velcro strap mount holding the sony lav reciever? I have been looking for something to mount my reciever and not sure if the lectro sleeve will fit a sony reciever.
How do you get into TV production? Halfway into my second year of doing videography professionally and not sure where to go from here. Don't know how much longer I can stomach making only corpo recaps before I start going insane. Been thinking of starting my own documentary series in my hometown to get the creative ball rolling.
About the request from your client not to use a Burano with the FX9 because of color matching (I assume). $70 Filmora can color match pretty much anything at a click of a button. You can pick whatever frame of the source camera you want. I would expect Sony to match their sensor profiles best they can. Further, I would think that having two different lenses on FX9s would have more of an effect than the two different sony sensors. I understand if you don't want to weigh in. When my wife wants to make fun of this stuff she'll say during some show we're watching, "That must be RAW". I have to laugh.
Very odd for production to turn down an fx9 , because it has to "match " an fx6 . The other way , maybe , but sounds like a show you wouldn't want to work on anyway based on that alone.
@@CrankyCameraman yeah can happen I guess , I one time turned down a shoot because they insisted I rent a far inferior soft light than the one I alway owned , because thats what their DP used ,couldn't make them see reason, I guess he had a crap tripod too and they would want me to rent the same instead of using my Sachtler ! But to me a bit of a red flag if thats the folk they employ , as well as just being plain stupid . :)

still cant believe you sold the Amira, by far the best camera ever made.
Yep, totally agree. But my back and shoulder are better. Geography change and client shift, running the gear the fits the work.

I have covered some of this in past vlogs. Fastest ROI is a few months, most are 12-18 months.
