CHARTERMADE - it’s great, I am trying my hand at leather craft. And it’s through TH-cam channels such as yours that I learn and improve. I have just been given a saddle for a horse to fix. Just a case of re-stitching. The holes are already there it’s just going to do my very best saddle stitch 😊
Hey Terry. Not sure if you're fishing for video ideas but I've trying to learn about the different types of pricking irons. I've found several different types like Diamond, French, etc. but the use cases for them escape me. Not really sure which one I should go with or even which size and more importantly why. I'm guessing the size is just about maintaining a good relationship between size of your thread, thickness of the leather and amount of wear and tear you expect the seem to endure. I'm going to keep looking it this on my own but I enjoy the way you teach things on your channel. Thanks

I’ve always loved the smell of aged tobacco leaf and leather. I began tan my hides adding a ‘tea’ of steeped aged tobacco leaf and my normal tanning solution. After drying I case and burnish the grain for that perfect distressed ‘oil’ finish that finishes with that ‘old world’ leather color and smell.

Hey Bonnie, I had this one custom made many years ago and I believe the artisan who made no longer makes them. There are really nice ones on the rocky mountain leather supply website though. regards Terrick
Hey Sam, the stitching clamp was custom made a couple years back by an artisan in France, his name is Fred Moreau but I believe he stopped making them several years back. It really is a piece of art for me and I do love beautiful tools.

they will be saddlers needles. Saddlers needles have a blunt tip so are used when holes are made before hand with a stitching chisel. Glovers needles have sharp point so used on thin leather (often gloves, hence the name) where the leather needs to be pierced.

Saw a comment about repairing bridals doing a saddle stitch using dental floss as thread. They said, that gear was in service for decades. Plan to start replacing rotted out stitching on a convertible car top tomorrow. That tip came in perfect time. Blessings!
Hi Terrick, I have a questioin about leather thickness, the overseas guys speak about ounces of thickness, but here in South Africa they speak of millimeters of thickness. How do I compare ounces to millimeters? The other thing I would like to ask, what thickness of leather do you recommend for making wallets, also what kind of leather? I have made a couple of wallets now, but the leather is kind of soft, so it is really hard to burnish the edges, I am starting to think I should have went for a veg tan leather? I only started playing with leather craft earlier this year, so I am not the smartest at it
Hi Callie, there will be charts online so google ounce mm chart. Depending on the wallet design it varies but for a design like this I use 1.3mm veg tan. Have fun learning leather crafting, it is very rewarding.
Cheers on the compliment but the best way to help a beginner is with projects that are manageable such as this one, if I made one of my fancy briefcases or bags it wouldn’t serve the people Im trying to help with these videos. However, Charlene and I are working on something that will be better for advanced makers and people that want to push further in their craft work.
