For me, the world has not yet scratched the surface of the Filipino musicality. For us Pinoys, music is laughter, tears, inspiration and everything in between. It doesn't matter if we can carry a tune or not, we are music lovers. My theory why Pinoys are very good singers even without formal training is that we are very good mimics. We mimic sounds (and acts) that we like and practice it to perfection. When Pinoys are born, we don't cry. We sing!😁😂

Her name is Ryssi Avila. She's a finalist at Idol Philippines
Rainbow is an original song of South Border. In SB19's LA leg of the WYAT tour, Jay Durias (original South Border) played the piano for SB19 when they sang MAPA. He sometimes coaches (vocal) for SB.
Correction: Jay played at the Homecoming concert, Simon Servida did it in LA. Thanks to our fellow A’tin for reminding this lola

  • @Skip-Kilat

my theory on why old music is still good music and still listened and sung in the Philippines?
it’s because the parents never lose their love fir music and listen to the songs they grew up with at home, in the car, at the office… everywhere. the kids hear it and absorb it and the songs engrave itself. that’s how music became the soul of filipinos. it’s passed on generation to generation.
i guess the american equivalent is star wars and comicbook superheroes.
    for Filipinos, it’s music
and it becomes more than that… music becomes the thing that binds you to people. you remember your parents through music. you remember the friendships you made through music. you remember lost loves, lost friendships, lost times through music. you bind yourself with your partner forever through music.
it isn’t a stretch to say that in each filipino’s mind there is a movie about their life and that they know what songs are included in the soundtrack.

Yeah you're right, Josh, it's hard to break that kind of cycle of Pop Culture Music in the Philippines that's why when SB19 introduced it to the PPop industry , they were accused of copying KPop..One good example of OPM is SB19 is Hanggang Sa Huli and TILALUHA .that kind of music where we are used to..See , there's a lot of difference when Pop Music was 1st introduced to the Philippines, it became a BIG DEAL.🤔👌👏👍😘💕💖

The Philippines is a hub of all music genre...regardless of genre or era, we treasure it all, for us its timeless and respect all...regardles of what generation we came or is born to because this is how we are brought up, this is our culture. For the same reason, Filipinos for most especially who grew in our home country we embody that recilliancy in everything from music, work and in eveything we do in our God given life. They say we are a 3rd world country, maybe that is why we, treasure and cherish whatever we have regardless of stature and time. In a way thanks to being 3rd world, we can survive, our feet always on the ground and morales in tack.

As a 90s kid growing up in San Francisco Bay Area, R&B like this was what listened to. On the radio. On MTV. On C&C Music Factory. At church showcases throughout the Bay. One reason why I’m so into music and artists of the Philippines is because they’ve kept the era of music I grew up with. Sadly, even as a Filipino, I never gave artists from the Philippines much attention growing up. But I appreciate all of them now.
The only Filipino artists I ever knew was Lea Salonga, Jocelyn Enriquez & Stevie B. 😂

The part where he says that songs on the radio today are still the songs from the 80's and 90's is correct (also from the 70's and on Sundays the 60's). It comes from partly the fact that Filipinos do love their love songs, their mellow songs and that we are a very relaxed and peaceable people.

I didn't know that Hamilton was going to go to the Philippines. A Filipino singer, Rachel Ann Go, who was quite popular in the Philippines in the 90s, actually played one of the main characters on Broadway, as well as in the original West End production in the UK.

Another one La Divas, although they are not together anymore, I missed the blending they do on their songs, it’s so good.

They just set her chair lower than the guys next to her so the guy with the guitar at her back won't be blocked for the camera at a full frame angle/set shot.
Filipino music is so diverse you only checked around 40-50% of it you missed the half. You didn't checked the underground, indie scene yet which you can watch or listen live only on special music events that you don't usually hear on Filipino radio channels or even on TH-cam or other music streaming sites.

Morissette sang Never Enough for David Foster 6 days in a row and The Bodyguard Medly day2 to day 6 and kept wowing David Foster! Facts: Originally she has to sing for 3 days only, but it ended singing 6 whole nights because of her exceptional performance! Impeccable! Sky is the limit for Morissette! Please check these out! Thank you soo much!

Great reaction & analysis! I always get goosebumps from these 3 vocalists especially the last part where they had to do their versions of closing the song. Nuts!

South Border is the original performers of the song. The harmonies of the girl and the falcetto are originals. Basically, they would have told Michael to jump in and work with the original harmony with something that works. It’s next level musicianship 👍

The girl is Ryssi, the band is southboarder band , the one who sang in falsetto is the lead singer of southboarder..and the front who sing is Michael p.

yeah... we're kinda stuck in that era (70's to the 90's) not because that's what we hear all the time on the radio. it's just we really don't dig that synthetic sound in modern music.

Wonderful reaction. For my money, this is one of the very best recordings of a song on TH-cam. The arrangement and performances and production is mind-blowing to me. I would happily have that recording played at my wedding and my funeral.

Been waiting for you to react to this! Love Michael's (and his band's) version of Rainbow! This is an original OPM song by South Border which came out in 2004. One of the composers of this song is Jay Durias who is a founding member of South Border, aside from being a singer, he is a songwriter, arranger & record producer. Jay Durias is one of the producers for SB19's What? & MAPA.

Very interesting take on the 80-esque genre... I think our musical tradition from the 1600s has been rooted in European Moorish Romantic influences. The 80s music represented the last and best musicality of pop music. I guess we're stuck there until a better tradition emerges... 🤔

Talking about Hamilton, the role of Elizabeth Hamilton is being played by a Filipina, Rachel Ann Go in the West End, London production of Hamilton. FYI, a lot of Filipino talents end up going to Broadway or West End. Who can forget Lea Salonga who originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon in both Broadway and West and ended up getting both a Tony and a Laurence Olivier award.
