Fun Story... I owe my entire career to the Matterhorn!.. when I was around 8-10 years old I was in line for the ride and I was leaning up against the faux Granite Boulders on the side of the mountain. And I remember looking closely at the surface of the Rock and I realized that it was all little tiny paint Speckles that made it look like granite. I then looked up at the entire Mountain and realize that it was all a bunch of paint Speckles all the way to the top. It was at that moment that I realized that everything at Disney was a Scenic paint to make it look real and that it wasn't actually real. It changed the way I look at theme parks my entire life! And I started to pay attention to how things were done. I love it so much I became a Scenic Artist!
That is incredible!! I can relate, as all I look at when we go to the parks is how the surfaces are sculpted, textured, and painted to appear as something they are not!
I have to admit I wasn’t wild about this mug when images were first released last week but after watching this episode I have a much greater appreciation for the design process and how everything came together.

Omg! I have so many thoughts! 1) I absolutely love the sculpting montages! They’re sooo satisfying and it makes me miss sculpting in the best possible way. 2) that is such a cool mug! I was so confused how a foot print was going to turn into a mug, but bam! You did it! And it’s so cool! 3) it feels like it’s been forever! I was so, so excited to see a new episode pop up in my feed! 4) I don’t think I could have kept that secret for almost two years! I’m impressed you did it,sad you had to wait, and so happy we still got to see the process! 5) this process was so weird and different compared to your usual sculpts and series runs of casts, it was fascinating to see it go from wax to silicone mold to weird epoxy!

My grandparents live just a few blocks from Eugene Toy & Hobby. I remember my dad used to buy his model airplane supplies there. That's about all I remember.
It's interesting to see the final result and which details get washed out. But I guess that's the nature of big-batch ceramics. Loved the process though. Thanks for sharing!

You know far more about epoxies and castings than I do, but my world is custom cars/motorcycles. So.... Haha, I have one pointer for you. That "Bondo" brand glazing putty, seems like its easy to work with, until you use a better product. If you look for Evercoat, or Upol brand glazing putty, (for the cost, I like "dolohin glaze" or "liquid gold"), you will be blown away by how much easier it is to apply and sand.
LOVED this video!! Also your costume as super fun!!! You are such an inspiration! I want to continue to work hard on my ceramic craft to someday have such a cool opportunity like that!!

It's really cool to see the use of SFX materials in this project. I was up in Georgia last year learning how to use those exact materials to make molds to cast silicone medical task trainers. This was a great episode and congrats on being able to make this mug for Disney. Aloha!

Are you allowed to sell as different variant? Just curious about contract details. Did they pay ur way to the big reveal in California?
Disney was a great client and I feel lucky to have done this. I made the master model for the mug, and handed it off to Tiki Farm for them to produce the ceramic edition of mugs. Disney owns the IP and copyright on the Matterhorn, so I won’t make any variations. As to the rest of the contract details, they are private as I’m sure you understand.

It did shrink - that is why I scaled up the master model.
