When the Washington Capitals signed Nicklas Backstrom to a 5-year contract extension, they weren't just signing the player with the most assists in franchise history.
They signed an incredible teammate who is dedicated to his family, the organization and the fans in Washington, D.C. who have made the area feel like his second home.

It's a bit sad but not that surprising if you think about it. Nick embodies the swedish-motto of "jantelagen", which essentially means never to show off or believe you are somehow better than others. Just do your job and keep quiet about it. Every interview you watch him you can see him a bit awkward, not one to enjoy the spotlight. He very rarely gets into fights, never makes drama-related headlines. Even his playstyle seems to embody this. He very rarely misses games, he's put into every key situation, scores crazy goals and makes even crazier assists... yet he is always in the shadow of the more expressive superstar of Alex Ovechkin. He's the perfect center, the silent invisible passer able to create key plays but also a capable scorer. Im prob reading too much into it but thats my assessment. :)

Nick is pure class, great, underrated player, and a wonderful parent. Thrilled that he will be a Washington Capital for Life!

As a pens fan I kind of hope that he would move. But as a Swede I love that guy and hope that he will at least one more cup before he retire.

He and Ovi will not be wearing any other sweaters that do not say CAPS while in the NHL. Management will not allow it, they have to be on the same page as the fans that they will retire as Caps.

He's been my favorite player in hockey all the way since he played for Brynäs IF in Sweden, I hope that I can go to WSH and watch atleast 1 game before Backy and Ovi retires!

Some players are called underrated so much that they become overrated, but definitely not Nick. How's this for underrated - 5th in points since entering the league, 1 All Star game.

It’s almost criminal how underrated he is. He’s consistently one of the best passers in the league for his entire career, but is rarely ever acknowledged for it.
At least there’s almost no doubt that when he’s done he’ll have his number hanging from capital one arena and be enshrined in the hall right next to Ovi.

I know you and ovi are from different countries and it's a work visa situation that you're in the area. But with raising a family born in the area and you and ovi will FOREVER BE a part of the Caps organization , will you stay in the area or move your family to your hometown?? It would be sad to see you go and it would be sad for your family to have to leave what's familiar
