  • This video shows how I would protect my green Malayan dwarf coconut palm when ever the forecast called for a low overnight temperature of 30 degrees F/1.1C.

      Looks like I will be following my own advice for this coming Saturday night/Sunday morning. I expect my low temperature to drop into the 20s. First time in about 6-7 years.

    thanks for this video! Im also in 9b and bought a couple dwarf green Malayan's. They are about 8 feet tall but has not started to develop gray bark yet. One tree looks good but the other has maybe 30 percent foliage. Any tips on how to prevent the leaves from foliage for those nights in the 40s? I wonder if wrapping the trunk helps with the leaves.

    Hello :) what do you use to cover the sensor in the open to protect it against open sky radiation but still letting airflow in to get an accurate measure of the air temperature?

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had my sensor inside a pillow case suspended about 4 feet above the ground from the hinges of a step ladder. I plan on getting an inexpensive Stevenson screen for this purpose. The main thing is that I didn't want the sensor to be directly exposed to the open sky. Even without good air flow the pillow case is going to quickly assume the air temperature around it via conduction. If the temperature of the sensor and pillow case is warmer than the air around it, what little heat difference there is will flow to the colder air, thus lowering the temperature of the pillow case and sensor.

    i’m wondering if you think this method would work in the cyclades islands of greece? specifically milos?? i’m from hawaii but moved here since this is where my husband is from, im missing coconuts soooo much and absolutely want to grow them.

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the biggest negative factor for not being able to grow coconut palms in Greece is lack of wintertime heat. It's like zone 10b/11 in southern California. They rarely get a freeze, but the problem is that it's just too cool (temperature) during the winter. Coconut palms don't like prolonged cool temperatures even when there is no freeze. The soil cools down and root activity shuts down.

    i’m in flagler beach trying to grow one, this winter we saw temps around 25 degrees, the lowest we’ve ever seen it here. being by the coast helps, but i used 2 oz frost cloth and another additional 1 oz, and wrapped the trunk with a quilt. it’s 14 gallons, it survived and is happily growing! how are your coconut trees doing?

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My coconut (the one in the above video) is doing great. Of course, it's much taller now. Just today I trimmed a dead frond off of it. Good luck in growing your coconut palm.

    What's the lowest temperature it saw without any covering or heating? Awesome palm

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been many, many years, probably since the brutal cold of both January and December of 2010 that I last fully protected my coconut palm. But two winters ago my coconut palm saw 28 degrees with frost, browning lots of the leaves but otherwise my coconut did fine. A neighbor a few blocks away has three coconut palms (with very little trunk) and they saw about the same temperature (but probably a degree or so lower) as I did, and their coconut palms were more severely hurt, plus the new fronds were stunted.

      @hammerofluke2013 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1royalpalm I see. I have a baby one in my backyard. It hasn't gone pinnate yet so it would be very easy to cover. I'm about 30-35 miles from cocoa beach in lake hart. I've seen about 5 coconuts in my area that are pretty decent size so I decided to give it a shot. Anything under 33-35 degrees I think I'll cover it up

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hammerofluke2013 I have a small coconut palm that I've covered the past two winters on the coldest nights (with frost). I use multiple layers of flannel sheets. Just covering the palm keeps frost off the leaves, and it can take down to 28 degrees with no damage to the leaves, whereas 28 degrees with frost on the leaves would damage them. Frost is the biggest enemy once the temperature falls to 32 degrees.

    Do you see frosts every year in your area?

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I normally have one or two nights each winter with light frost. This past winter I had a hard frost (first time in about five years). My coconut palms fronds got severely burned. One frond was mostly under high oak tree canopy and it wasn't burned.

  • @SanjuSanju-me2tn
    @SanjuSanju-me2tn ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's nice how did you know only that winter the temperature is going to fall below 0 and it's very rare it happens

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  ปีที่แล้ว

      The weather forecast indicated I was going to get a hard freeze, a freeze cold and long enough that it would have killed my coconut palm. Generally, I can go 5 years or so without a freeze that would hurt my coconut palm.

    Would be interesting to see how the offspring of this tree would do.

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have one offspring from my mother palm that's been in the ground now for about five years. So far it's never been hurt by cold or frost; however, I have it planted under heavy tree canopy which protects it. That's fine but the offspring grows much slower not getting full sunlight.
