They thought they had a reliable friend called "The Guy In The Sky". They pleaded with him to help them with this & other problems. He ignored them because he thought they were idiots. The Hump Supporters weren't alone. They willingly & stupidly shared the planet with a subspecies called The Parasites. The Parasites were mischevious little devils who refused to do any real work or cultivate food or construct buildings or do anything productive at all. They survived by brainwashing & enslaving the Hump Supporters who did absolutely everything for the Parasites AND THE HUMP SUPPORTERS ACTUALLY PAID THE PARASITES FOR PARASITISING THEM!
