That shit always infuriates me; Political powers order illegal operations on civilians and at worst are made to step down from their position. I believe we should hold politicians in these circumstances MUCH more accountable. This isn't even just a problem of the past, as is obvious.
Generally accepted here in France that it was Gerald Royal, brother of 2007 Presidential candidate Segoline, that planted the bombs and she knew about it. One of the reason she lost.
The Rainbow warrior was already old history back then. I don't remember seeing much about her brother being involved in the Rainbow Warrior during the 2007 presidential election. Segolene Royal mostly lost because she was mainly seen as an incompetent that mostly benefited from nepotism to reach her position. She was mostly know for crying about japanimation on French TV and being the ex of François Hollande. Sarkozy also benefited from the safety angle, thanks to his job at the interior ministry, and the support of the moderate righ wing and president, Jacques Chirac.

France at the time was a member of the European Union. One thing that would be interesting to know is whether EU backed France in its planning, execution and covering up of terrorist attacks against other nations. One might first think that there are provisions in the combined treaties of the EU that would deem terrorist activity at least punishable in some regard. I live in Denmark, and we are also part of the EU, therefore it is of some value for us to know whether the union in which we are a member nation actively supports terrorism.
I remember this at the time, and it was truly shocking; the French government's contempt for peaceful protest and for other countries' sovereignty was and is appalling
Would you want a bunch of soap dodgers interfering with your hydrogen bomb test and possibly endangering your personnel? They brought it on themselves, what was the alternative, sink the thing at sea if it got into the exclusion area probably causing the entire crew to be lost? The French wanted to minimize casualties. Admittedly they fucked it up bigtime but I can see why they attempted to sink the ship before it left port.
@@meetoo594 - they could have minimised casualties a lot more by not letting the damn bombs off in the first place - not just casualties at the time, but those who have to live with the consequences of the fallout contamination.
@@franl155 Well yeah, that goes without saying but that's not what's being discussed. What Greenpeace were planning to do would have potentially got a lot of people killed. Leading a flotilla of boats crewed with pissed off activists into a nuclear test zone. Greenpeace were known for ramming and interfering with shipping, the military couldn't let them get anywhere near the island as they would have no choice but to sink the ships probably resulting in quite a few deaths. The French tried the logical best option and arguably it worked as the test went ahead without incident and all the agents got away with it with a slap on the wrists.
I disagree with both parts of your statement. France had many victories in it's past, for example the French region of Lorraine used to be the German region of Lotharingia. Furthermore I would argue France lost to Greenpeace, given that Greenpeace eventually got what it wanted with France eventually agreeing to end nuclear testing.

I don't mean to be the pedantic language asshole but the name actually originates as a mispronunciation of the Arabic name for the star "Yad-al-jauza" by latin speakers who thought the Arabic Y was a B. There are three or four "frequently heard, generally accepted" pronunciations of Betelgeuse, including the way Simon said it. Most linguists would agree that if a word is pronounced one way by some people and another way by others, both are correct. Language is usage, and pronunciation changes all the time. There is no "best" pronunciation. If that were the case every word in English (including names) would be a mispronunciation of Old English. You're free to have a preferred pronunciation but the argument that one pronunciation is better or worse doesn't really hold up. For names I would agree that you should pronounce a person's name the way they prefer, but Betelgeuse is the name of a star, not a person so you can't really ask. Also there isn't always just one way to pronounce a name: Clara (Clare-uh/Clar-uh), Alecia (Uh-lee-see-uh/Uh-leesh-uh), Stephen (stee-ven/Stef-en), etc.

That shit always infuriates me; Political powers order illegal operations on civilians and at worst are made to step down from their position. I believe we should hold politicians in these circumstances MUCH more accountable. This isn't even just a problem of the past, as is obvious.
Simon starts channel about Simon starting channels.
I knew this would be about the Rainbow Warrior the moment Simon mentioned French nukes.
Castle Bravo was not the US's first hydrogen bomb. The first was Ivy Mike in 1952.
The French government was absolutely disgusting with both the bombing and bomb testing.
Classic Simon, didn't link the other channel 🤣
I think it was an obvious sabotage plot.
ugh..I hate myself today

Me:"DAMN my phone screen is filthy!"
Ah the French Government... Doing whatever it damn well wanted to since... well forever!
Because only the french did that.
And this is how “Zilla” was born
That fluke is still the worst stain on french secret services
Why are there so many B vitamins?
There are only 8 true vitamins - 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12 - all the others given numbers were either not essential for life, or manufactured by the body, thus don't meet the criteria to be a vitamin. B are all the water-soluble ones, all the other vitamins like A, D, E and K are fat-soluble. C is water-soluble but it is separately classified, maybe because B was originally thought to be just 1 type
Is it weird that when I read the title, Church lady popped in my head?
"Could it be....Satan?!" Lmao.
Hey Simon for a future video please do a video on the history of wearing a cape
Just wanted to give Simon a shoutout ya bloody legend
I remember when this happened got coverage in the USA.
There is no link in the description Simon!
I fart in your general direction
11:01. Today I found out or toptenz? Still think video on Nepal Gurkas would be Legend. Allegedly..
What happened to the CANZUK ? Obviously, the French weren't too worried about a reaction from Canada, Australia or Uk at the time.

Is it considered stealing if a vendor drops 2 items instead of 1?
Or any sort of mechanical giving machine?
I disagreed with the French Australian Submarine deal but I still think we got screwed in Aukus.
France's first military victory ever and it had to be against Greenpeace.
No wonder Al Bundy hates the French
I disagree with both parts of your statement. France had many victories in it's past, for example the French region of Lorraine used to be the German region of Lotharingia. Furthermore I would argue France lost to Greenpeace, given that Greenpeace eventually got what it wanted with France eventually agreeing to end nuclear testing.
@@jamesfrost126 your sarcasm detector is malfunctioning

You should do how do they teach Mexican independence in spain
Physics is FUN!
Why did you change the title, dropping the reference to Greenpeace?
Praise the Blaze Brothers!
I swear at 1:14 he said "Cannabis shart."
I believe its pronounced "Beetlejuice" actually lol
Blue jerboa is a weird name for a nuke
So sad, France should learn humanity from North Korea 🇰🇵❤️🇫🇷
We are on the way there buddy dont worry.
liberte, egalite, fraternite🙄🙄
The events immediately leading up to the bombing and the bombing itself took place in July not August
Wow this is messed up
Biograpics on Simon Whistler!
Bettel Guise?! Do you mean Beetlejuice? Lol
Beetlegiuse is German and the correct spelling
@@heatherturner2366 I wasn't concerned with the spelling, as I was using the best phonetic representation I could through text. It was the way he enunciated it that I was concerned about.
This would be an epic blaze video 🥺
This episode reminds me of "LASER (HITS) 88' or, as properly named " The MV Communicator" SIMON! how about an episode on pirate radio ships! :)
Wow, I'm literally never going to feel bad for another terror attack on French soil ever again.
Love you videos
Simon i really dont think you have enough youtube channels. You need to get your act together.
We really went mad with those nuclear bombs like some spoiled Kids with fancy toys......
1966? Same year St. Kilda Saints won their only premiership
Greenpeace is a slightly less crazy, environmentally focused, PETA
Now we need a rapper named Rainbow Warriors
Damn they murked those protestors.
"Bettle-Gice"? You mean "Beetle-Juice"? It's a name. There is only one accurate pronunciation for names. That's a bit like pronouncing your name as "See-mon Whyst-Lurr".
Betelgeuse is a constellation
@@marytataryn5144It's a star... actually one of the brightest ones in the sky. in the constellation Orion it is his left shoulder. You can look it up if you don't believe me.
@@Squbber lol....I knew it was something celestial anyway. Also, when I first pronounced it, I totally pronounced it the way Simon did. The heck anyway.
