Round 2 of the 1992 Australian Touring Car Championship was held on March 8 at Sandown Circuit in Melbourne.
Heat 1 saw John Bowe take the honours in his Ford Sierra RS500 with Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife 2nd and 3rd respectively.

One of John Bowes finest ATCC wins.
Takes me back to watching John Bowe as a 12 y.o. in 1992. I watched him race for DJR every chance I could from 1988 until 1998. He is a great man, I have so much respect for him after hearing the talks he has done on depression and mental health. True blue legend.

The 7,500 rev limit imposed by CAMS for the Sierra's and Commodore's in 1992 definitely brought the Sierra's back into the game. As Dick Johnson later said, instead of chasing outright power from the engines, they were able to tune them for more torque which actually made them faster than they had ever been.
Of course, the restrictions on the Nissan's did help, though they weren't as bad as what was being quoted or shown in the early ATCC rounds. They said power was down to 450 bhp due to the pop-off valves on the turbos, but in reality they still had around 600.
450? No way was more like 550. Don’t think they got to 600 that year.
@@harteck4452 They did actually. Fred Gibson confirmed it in an interview about 7 or 8 years ago.
RPM limit. You can change the gearing ratios to mitigate its effect. Not completely but it helps

Wish we in the UK could of had the R32 in the BTCC. Stunning car.
The group A era was due to end after the 1990 BTCC season to be replaced by what became Supertouring. An R32 Skyline GT-R could only have been used for one year, a year of development. A lot of time and investment for one season. Fred Gibson racing took the whole of that year to get his GT-R racers into shape. And anyway, the BTCC rules people banned 4 wheel drive cars in the run up to 1990.
