  • Come join me...CollidingPlanets as I take a look round this beautiful Gothic church from the 12th century.
The Church of St Martin, Cwmyoy, Monmouthshire, Wales, was begun in the 12th century, although most of the current structure dates from the 13th century. The church is most notable for its extreme tilt, caused as a result of a landslide. This has led to many attempts to strengthen the church and prevent its collapse, through the use of massive tie beams and buttresses. The church is in the Gothic style and has a chancel, nave, south porch, and western tower. A round-headed north window dates to the 12th century, and the nave roof has been dated to the late 13th or early 14th century. St Martin's is a Grade I listed building and an active parish church. It is dedicated to St Martin.

Wow the tilt on this church is crazy, I'm surprised it's still standing

I remember it well! I was serving in the Royal Navy in the summer of 1964 and was on a leadership course at HMS Royal Arthur. The final few days of the course was spent in the Black Mountains. We were bussed to Cwmyoy and accommodated in a disused school in the hamlet. We visited the church on the first evening and sat outside in the sunshine while one of our course mates played the ancient organ. An evening to remember as the wonderful melody filled the church and the valley.

Hi Wayne, that church is stunning, wow. I'm not religious either but I do love old churches. You should check out St Materiana's church in Tintagel, Cornwall. It really is a beautiful church too and it's 11th century too. xx

A very nice little church build on bad ground by the looks of it, i know they did build by using the carpenters eye in the old days, and you ended up with one wall longer than the other but this place is really crooked lol A very nice find Wayne.

Yes, you are right there Rolf. I read there was a landslide where this church was built so I think that's what caused this one to go. I built a brick barbecue once without using a level...the leaning tower of Pisa had nothing on that...lol...talk about carpenter's eye. It still cooked fantastic food though lol.

It was buried in the farmers field deliberately to stop it being stolen around the reformation but the chur h is so rural the solders never found it

This church is as bent as the majority of the clergy in the church in Wales.
