Cascadia, DD15 coolant contaminated with oil and how to fix it.

  • Common problem with the DD15 and DD13 is oil will start to contaminate the cooling system. The first place you will notice this will be inside the coolant surge tank (expansion tank). The tank will start to get dark and stain with oil.
    This will most likely be the seals at the oil cooler. This will require the complete oil/coolant module to be removed in order to gain access.
    The job will take about 6-10 hours, after which the coolant system will need to be flushed (cleaned).
    Oil that is removed, must be replaced with new motor oil. New oil filter and coolant filter must be used.
    Oil seals will need to be replaced, oil cooler can be used but you must pressure test before reinstalling. Oil cooler must be torqued to 22 ft lb, new mounting gasket must installed and torqued.
    If you have any questions, please consult a professional or your manual.

Ive just done injector cup seals because my truck mixed fuel in coolant and it stinks. Im interested in what kind of product you use for the flush and what procedure you prefer.

Oil dipstick "seems" fine with just oil in it. So my question is what are chances that my head gaskets is out? Or is it this issue you showed us? I do leak coolant somewhere that i can not figure out. Also i can see that drivers side of engine is wet.

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The issue can take time to present itself. The driver needs to looking at the coolant tank to see if there are any changes.
      Once the customer saw the issue, he brought it in right away. The job takes around 10 hours, plus you will need to flush the entire cooling system several times in order to get as much of the oil as possible.

      This is the only place I have found where coolant can be introduced into the cooling system unless possibly the cylinder head but unlikely. The oil cooler, seals or the module itself.
      I have only seen the cylinder head be the issue one time and that was because mechanic that overhauled it prior to it coming to my shop installed an EPA 10 block with a GHG 14 cylinder head. They are not compatible.

      I would look into the EGR cooler being the issue. Check the cross over hot pipe, remove and inspect it inside. It should be dry and soot should only be present.

      The interval Detroit recommends is at 100,000 miles, 250,000 miles and then at 500,000 miles.

      Coolant goes through the cooler to cool off the exhaust gases. So oil in the coolant would be coming from a different source. Not likely from the radiator, although might be possible. The seals on the oil cooler are usually the source of the problem. How many miles are on the truck?
