- These big block Mopar stepped headers are the final prince needed to begin the big block swap into my 1968 Plymouth barracuda racecar.
In this video, I unbox and mock up these headers on the 400 low deck mopar engine. I also show the custom exhaust system that I’m making for this car.

Great video Joe. The car is going to be fun with that set up! Those TTI's are nice!
kevin
Thanks Kevin! I know the tubes would support the power your engine makes. Someday I want to get there! Thanks for stopping in!
I had a set of of them on my 440 in my 1972 Dart. Sold them last year when I switched out to a small block.
The best big block mopar headers
Do not block access to spark plugs,
And are not a major problem to install.
These types of headers are very rare .
If I had the ability, I'd build all of my headers from scratch .
Absolutely. Thanks for sharing. These are in car. I will video them soon.
Those headers look great. I would love for someone to do dyno tests with the oval pipes vs round. I think a complete 3 inch oval setup would give all the performance of the round and give you the ground clearance of a 2 inch setup. Total win/win.
Thanks, John! I will definitely flow more than the wimpy mufflers from before
Those TTIs sure are nice Joe. Good choice to run mufflers. I'll be 46 this year and I wish I'd have listened to the warnings about noise through the years. I'm nowhere near deaf, but let's just say my hearing ain't what it used to be. Mopar to the front!
Thanks, Tony! Mopar to you!
Nice headers! I like exhaust on the cars as well
Thanks, Tim! I want to hear the announcer! 😂
Great video. I can't wait to buy my first set of TTI's.
Thanks brother. I have an install video coming up soon!
Awesome looking headers! I think they look great unpolished too!👍
I’m excited to show them off and make passes again!
Them Headers sure are Pretty !
Absolutely! Thanks brother
I used to work at TTI back in 2006 and I can tell you it was great working with those guys. Good times
Very cool!
I hope that it runs as good as I predict and as good as it looks. Good morning and great Friday to you all. Have a great weekend JMJ!
Thanks, you too!
Looking good buddy can't wait to see her run
Thanks, Tony! Getting so close!
Those headers look badass Joe! 👍
Thanks buddy! Got them squeezed in
Good looking headers!
Cheerz!!
Thanks brother
I think they look great as coated. And they just look like HP sitting there! Looking forward to seeing the fit in car.
Thanks brother! It’s in now. I’m editing video and finishing the swap
Excellent video as always Joe - exhaust is definitely worth saving your hearing!!!
Thanks, Josh! Excited to hear it
Looks like those pipe's guna fit fine, most plug leads are missing it, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Thanks Donald! I will know more today
Nice headers Joe ! 10 yrs. ago i bought new chrome TTI 2" primary, long tube headers for my '73 Dart 4 speed,440 big block project. They said "No PS, or manual trans or straight plug heads." Well,i had to prop the car up nearly on it's drivers side & R&R the passenger side T-Bar but they DID fit (without a scratch) ! Minor trimming of that passenger side inner fender near the shock mount was necessary. Your low deck B mill should be a breeze.
Thanks, Shane! Made great progress today!
Headers on a Mopar . This brings back a lot of memories. Long time ago when i installed 426 marine wedge to replace the 383 i had destroyed from to heavy a foot . So the 426 was a dud when i installed ot in the 68 Charger . I had used the exhaust manifolds from the 383 so i bought a set of headers . What a learning experience. The starter was a deal to install. . Yea the headers woke up the 426 but it also did not like high rpm at some time . One thing a long time ago i saw on Utube . Jon Kaasy i think statec to use some rpms to clear out the small bits of rust that can be pulled back into the engine from exhaust over lap idling after start up . He stated i think give the engine some throttle to clear out the rust at start up on mild steel headers . . I use the stepped and coated exhaust headers on my money pit bikes . Thanks for the videos
Thanks for the advice, I’ll keep it in mind!
Nice looking headers! looking forward to seeing how the exhaust turns out!
You and me both! Thanks for the support
I just stuck those mufflers on my 360 mag ram yesterday. i know apples to oranges, but they sound great to me.
Thanks for sharing! I think they’ll do well to quiet it down and not change the sound up too much.
So pretty 😉😉
Thank you! 😊
Great video as always Joe! Your new Headers are really nice! I can immediately tell that they hug the drivetrain tighter than hooker's that I have on my 66' Sport Fury (383), and they are more friendly to the plug boots too! That is one thing that's a recurring issue with headers. I have wrapped headers before (71' Charger w/440, and it helped the plugs/wires but be careful when using that material! The fibers from it are really sharp and the retired mechanic next door was helping me out with the car right after I had put the header wrap on and got a fiber in his finger that became an issue he had to have removed shortly after! So just fyi. I've never messed with wrap again but I have considered the wrap boots for the wires themselves..I may try those out soon. Cut to fit wires get old having to replace. I'll be really curious to see how loud that neat muffler is also; the local smokies have given me a hard time about the exhaust on the Fury 2x actually...written warning too loud 🙄full mufflers the only thing I can think is that because the tips are turned down in front of the rear axle they resonate off the pavement maybe...idk. I think discussing and debating the decibel laws might make for a good episode some day 🤷 just a thought lol😁take care brother, we'll be watching for the next adventure lol. By the way...I always lay fire blankets on my inner fenders and run zip ties through my headers holding them against the inner fenders and drop the engine in the way...works pretty good for me and protects the new paint.
You must have hidden cameras in my shop! I used the wire tie trick to get these installed. Video coming soon!
@@JustMoparJoe great minds think alike brother! 😁 Happy Easter to you and your family 🙏
@@MidnightOilsRestoration happy Easter!
Good luck with the install. I tried to install my TTIs on my 72 dart 440, they hit everything and the last picture you showed with it in the car is about how mine looked when I gave up and took them back out.
Oh man. I have a video coming up soon for the install and start up 💪🏻
Funny you told that story about your dad! My dad was 100% deaf in one ear and couldn't hear for shit out of the other one. I am always careful of my hearing cause I know how he struggled with it.
We learn more from the mistakes! I had a guy whining at me for wearing ear muffs when I ran the engine on the test stand.
Been there, my hearing was damaged by train horns at work. The one thing I hated about that job. Good on you for thinking ahead and trying to reduce the damage to your health.
@@budlanctot3060 thank you. People get too tied up in vanity. It’s hard to unbust a grape.
Very nice Joe. The price hurts a little, but I bet they work as good as they look 😊
Definitely! Thanks Shane!
Very nice Headers Joe.
Glad that you were able to get them.
Going to be first class.
Thanks for sharing.
Take care, Ed.
Thank you, Ed! It’s a Moparty! Light the fires and..
Nice headers Joe, those TTI's are expensive handle with care!
You got that right! Thanks brother
Ordering a set for my 68 charger this week!
Excellent! Good luck 👍🏼
@@JustMoparJoe Thank you. They were out of stock unfortunately so the wait times around 8 to 10 weeks. Super excited for them!
I just went threw hell with headers on a roadrunner. I tried summit brand and hooked nether cleared the torsion bars. Finally ordered some dougs and the fit nice...
Yes sir. 318WillRun did a nice review of he Doug’s headers a few years back. I put the Doug’s on a 72 roadrunner that had a 383 it in to it. They went in smoothly.
Those headers look really nice! I bet they fit pretty good. Also that oval exhaust pipe is cool. Great video!
Thanks, Todd! Excited to get it done
Very useful video and review. Car looks great.
It’s been a long time since headers but I remember the best ones allowed removal of the starter without dropping the header for clearance.
Have you installed the motor yet or have you tested if you have clearance for the starter and if changing the starter would be possible without unbolting the headers?
I would think you lay the headers in the engine compartment and then slowly drop the motor in place?
Good luck with the mopar.
Thank you,Jim. Engine, headers, and starter are in place. I have a good video of the install coming up, and first start up!
@@JustMoparJoe do you think the starter can be removed/exchanged without unbolting the headers? Thanks for the reply
You can’t go wrong with TTI headers! They are the best for Mopars. I bought a set for my 1971 Satellite Sebring Plus.
Thanks, Kelly! My first set!
Great headers. Another piece of the puzzle comes together.
This. was.the.final.piece! 💥🚀
Man I couldnt stop gawking at that absolutely gorgeous pearl hue you laid down, that is definitely NOT the stock color. Phew I'd love to the whole car with that color now!
You and me both! I will get her sanded and shot after the engine is lined out. Sadly, it’ll probably be when it’s hot out 😅
Joe , i guess you get what you pay for and its your car 👍
Thanks brother
Same thing happened with my TF heads.. i was told late may, i called last week to get an update and the heads showed up 2 days later... love when that happens :) My balancer was supposed to ship 2 weeks ago but hasn't :(
nice headers... i picked up a old pair of 70's dougs headers for my small block for this year.. spreading the wallet pain around :)
P.S. i agree on the exhaust.. plus it's nice to hear if something is going wrong sooner than later.
Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to how it runs. Good luck with your project 🫡👍🏼
Those headers look great with just the coating and they were cheaper that way too. Added bonus. You might think about simple foam earplugs when your'e driving or working around the car running. You would get a little more hp and protect your ears too. This is coming from a motorcycle rider and racer. I don't go anywhere without them.
Thanks brother. I always wear plugs all day long at the track. My new helmet has Bluetooth and is much tighter on my head. It cancels noise and will definitely up my game.
Great headers.TTI's flanges are the best.
Thanks, Tim. They are thick and awesome!
I was impressed with how thick the collector flanges are.
Sharp looking Headers Joe! Lookin forward to the next time. Happy Easter Sunday.
Thanks, you too! Hope to fire her off soon.
Looking sweet Joe! Just the right size and configuration to let that 408 breath and like you said, you only get one set of ears so protect them early. I wear double hearing aids because of loud rock and bluegrass concerts, guns on the range and construction sites without wearing protection. Ad some drag racing and track conditions and your ears just can't take it. Hungry for a video when you get that angry V8 stuffed in the Barricuda.
Thanks Mike! It will be a great comparison to see how this short stroke big block compares to the long stroke of the old engine.
I was here hoping to find out what gaskets you used, to include any sealant/rtv/threadlube used on the exhaust header gasket and bolts.
@@aaronshelton4824 I used the gaskets that tti provided for the collectors. I can’t remember if I used the multi layered aluminum gaskets for the head flanges, or if it was the included ones from tti. Anti seize on the header bolts in to the heads.
Looks awesome and I like it.
The TTIs I ordered are due next month which by the way are the exact same set 2" into 3 1/2" collectors reduced to 3" for a 69 Dart with a 77 RB440.
Very nice! I’ve heard that with a 440, the fitment may be different. Good luck with your install. I think there were a few guys who commented about that under this video or the other one.
@@JustMoparJoe I love the large oval exhaust look. I'm following your example with Black Widow Neighbor Haters then dump ahead of rear wheels. Your videos take the hesitation/doubts out of my decision making processes. A visual aid! Thank you!
Love it. Looking forward to this swap.
Thanks, John. There’s bounty’s out there to outrun!
The headers look good . Gonna be a nice car and I bet those big pipes will have a good throaty sound . I understand about hearing loss . Guns , tractors and a few other things have reduced my hearing abilities . By the time you realize it it’s too late to do anything except try and save what’s left . Looking forward to seeing all that under the hood !
Thank you, Terry! I appreciate The support!
So you can't use those headers with straight plugs and are not angled? Plan to take out the steering box with the pitman arm drag link and end links and use a rack+pinion
I’m going to use them with straight plugs in the truck. It helps the inside tubes with clearance.
When you said you were going to repaint under the hood I didn't think it was necessary. But now it's beautiful.
Thanks, Mr.Rick. It needed some more sanding, but definitely a cool color and plenty good enough for who it’s for!
Good thinking about your hearing,I am 35 well actually 53, but even though I am not very old my wife says I can't hear nothing, just reverse your age numbers and keep future ears and eyes protected and add years of fun to enjoy your hobbies, good luck with the new headers that exhale better
Thanks Dina! I might just hit the big 35 this year, Lord Willing
Joe what do you recommend 71 340 crank is bad what crank and rods do you recommend street and occasional race car is a 4 speed
If you can swing it, I would go with the scat stroker crank. They’re available in prebalanced kits that would help with lots of good torque to move your mopar.
TTI sure makes some pretty headers, let me know if you going to go with TTI on the Ramcharger….my Headmen are trashed
Thanks, Brother. I have a set of headers that I test fit up on it in a video. I’m not sure the brand, but I’m donating them to the project 👍🏼
Those are going to look great if you polish them up. Don't sell yourself short, I think it is gonna be a great runner.
Thanks John!
Here's a little advice for you, I had trouble with my 505 which would run out of fuel pressure, I changed the tank, pump and the lines and the filter, same problem. The problem was the holley fuel pressure regulater, which has a very small area,.220 opening inside. So hopefully you have a bypass Style or Holly makes a bigger deadheaded regulator which took care of the problem. What threw me off was the 440 I had before had no problems with the same carburetor also!
Thank you, Thomas. I will definitely keep that in mind.
Those look nice. Hope they fit.
Thanks Garry! Video and start up soon!
Worth every penny. 👍🏁
Absolutely. These may outlast me!
Great evening to you Mr. Joe!😊
Thanks, John. I can grow into these headers. Have a good Easter weekend.
Oh, and those angled oval pipes remind me of the megaphone side pipes on the 340 AAR Cuda. I know they weren't oval but you get the same cross sectional area, maybe more.
Thanks, Mike!
You do know the "megaphone" tips on the AAR's & T/A's were fake in that the actual exhaust carrying pipe was flattened into a semi-circular cross-sectioned pipe inside the "megaphone". So half of the megaphone was just dead air.
Joe would you be looking at an X or H pipe before the mufflers?
I don’t think so. I’m not sure the added benefit would be worth it enough to buy one.
Looks nice, Joe.
Thanks, Laut! Definitely excited to try them!
Those look great! I noticed they fit B bodies as well. So, you shouldn't have exhaust fitment issues putting that engine into my car! 😅
Hahaha! You called it, Jason!
@JustMoparJoe Awesome! On a serious note, the Cuda that can is looking to be even more badass than ever.
@@IndirectConnection1 thanks buddy! I’m ready to see how she does
Mopar People!!
Dart Sport!!
What are, “the best people?”
I had to Order through Mancini.I also thought that B Block 2 inch headers were not available from tti..and hard of hearing has its advantages too
TTi will send you an invoice through PayPal to pay for your order after talking. Mancini told me that only 1 3/4 headers would work with my combination. TTI said that’s a big lie
👍😎
Thanks John! Smoke will follow the fire soon!
Big power like I said.
Doug’s headers D452 fit great and less money.
Thanks brother. I wanted to go TTi. I have an install video on the 451’s in a 72 roadrunner. They’re nice, but not the same as these.
the one think i dont like about TTIs is they wrap right around the transmission
Like a glove!
spending that much you'd think they would've been packaged better .box looked like it was kicked around by Ace Ventura lol thankfully no damage .
Absolutely! I lucked out
I HEAR you on the mufflers. Good choice.
Thanks brother. I definitely learned from the mistakes
I bet it is gonna breathe like a champ.
Breathing 🔥
Yes Mufflers allow you to hear things that are going wrong
Yes sir. I also have a new helmet that has Bluetooth to talk to my brother while staging and racing
I'm with you on the deafness thing trust me you wouldn't like it, I need captions for everything!
Thanks, Micheal. I had a dude razz me on the video of revving this engine on my stand while I was wearing the ear Muffs. He can kick rocks!
What's up mopar Joe. I'm heavy Chevy muscle Bone
Thanks Brother. Hope to convert you to the dark side, after this 400 gets on the racetrack!
Holy Jesus I thought that 500$ back in the day was bad😮
3" should work.
👍🏻💯🇦🇺⛽️
Getting close!
I'm a newbie 😊
Joe I think your headers are sexy 😂
Hahaha! Thanks Buddy!
