While I was watching this, I wondered how they were going to sustain the tension and resolve it at the end...I've seen other 'ghost stories' only to experience a sense of letdown or disappointment at the end. I know I'll be watching it again!
There are few things more lovely than a well-filmed black and white movie from earlier days. Just story, people, and sets. The clothes, the house, the furniture, and the beautiful voice of James Mason and a picture of a life in other days come together to make art. I'll take a movie like this over any new CGI excessive sense onslaught. Thank you for this film.
I love these old movies, such grace and style. Good stories, not trashy, no swearing and no mocking of people who have faith. Its so refreshing. Its mostly what I watch now thanks to great streaming services and lovely sites like this one. Real story lines, not just a lot of noise and nude bodies. What a shame movies have devolved into what they are now. This is one of the great old movies I loved. I remember watching a lot of these classic movies with my Mom when I was a little girl. The actors had to really act, not just strip off. It seems like movies now are so dark, and pessimistic and vulgar.
Oh mine, those beautiful classic decor, sweet sentiments, quality solid wood crafted furniture!!!! And that house was so grand!!! The stair case just breath taking!!! Love it all!!
Understated, but riveting! This movie proves that a good ghost movie doesn't need sudden shocks, gore or horrific special effects. What I like about a ghost story is the poignant history behind the haunting.
... James Mason was Born In Huddersfield in the County of West Yorkshire in the North of England 🏴.. his real Accent was " EEH BAH GUM LAD PUT WOOD INT 'OYL..."
Trooble at mill, sithy by eck, I were noburra lad, droomed aht at dominner team. They only speak like that for the tourists. For each other they speak Oxford English. James Mason's "posh" voice was his natural way of speaking.
A great reminder that acting, lighting, simple practical effects, and camera work, can impart more impact on the viewer than any amount of CGI ever can.
@@Mister_Listenerthey all were! The father was very believable as well. Robert is actually in the greatest movie ever made “Kind Hearts and Coronets” easily the best film of the 40’s and a British national treasure. Back to the acting: does anyone notice how the head lady’s maid is heavy handed on the servant because the servant is a little flirty? There are actually a lot of details in this movie. Can benefit from multiple viewings and not get old!
All this garbage reality TV has taken away from the true art of acting!!! They sure don't have talented beyond belief actors today like they did back then!! Wonderful movie, thank you for the upload ❤️

James Mason has to be among my favourite all time actors. A true British gentleman. Nothing like chilling out to a good old black and white film on a Sunday. There’s something about black and white, shadows and recesses always look that much more suspicious and foreboding. And it’s also such an absolute joy trying to work out what colours are used on the stage sets and the stunningly flawless costume the actors wear. Thank you so much for the upload of this wonderful film. ❤️🇬🇧

I don't know how you liked it. It starts off with the acting going in the background - people talking and no music for the beginning and then when it goes to acting itself it is all out of sync. The wrong people talking at the wrong time. You get a woman's voice talking to another woman in the sound and a man talking to woman on the screen - that sort of thing. Very confusing.
@@gloriahanes5338 My dear, I am 61 years old! I'm talking about the uploader not getting the synching right. Nothing to do with the actual movie and how it was produced, because I presume it was correct on a DVD when it was uploaded to youtube, or that it was recorded correctly from a TV but the recording went wrong in the uploading onto youtube. I just started it again at the very beginning and THIS TIME the music started up and it seems to be in synch. At the time of my comment, I could not get the synching right. The movie started with conversation, not music and the whole way through the sounds were all over the place and the lip movements weren't correct. I clicked in different parts of the movie with the same issue all the way through. Now it is working. That's technology for you! I will have a good look at the movie when I get some time.
I watched this movie twice. A fantastic film. Could not get enough of James Mason's voice. He is such a prolific actor. Playing an elderly man so well. The entire cast was spot on.
A charming well told story. Wonderful cast and characters that populate this film. A fun treat to see James Mason in a very different role. Thank you for the film!🙂
4:39 to 5:00; It’s so good to see a husband taking care of his wife. This is what provide and protect means… Provide an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on, and protect her from her fears and the feeling of not being listened to
Whoever put this charming house/home together to look as warm and inviting as this one, truly knew what they were doing. Did they look at old photos, I wonder? I can imagine they did. Anyway, today's films lack this kind of character. James Mason, what a character he was. Always a man of integrity, so it would seem. There's no way he could play some plain Joe. Such a delight watching him. So refreshing to watch this kind of old haunted ghost story. Even though this was a ghost story, it wasn't vulgar or even too scary. NO one getting their neck bitten (vampires) or, someone being slashed to pieces. This is the kind of ghost story I like to watch. Absolutely great actors. Suburb acting. Well done.
Some of the country's larger houses may still be like that house in the film. Not necessarily all the rooms but many may be. Some open to the public at some time each year so the period pieces are maintained in significant rooms or areas.
@@MikeGreenwood51Many of the old houses in the UK, owned and open to the public by the National Trust, still look this way. My family and I have visited many, over the years.

Such a wonderful movie... a joy to watch. James Mason was wonderful, as was the rest of the excellent cast. And a truly heart felt ending... just loved it!
Thank you so much for providing! Some of my fondest memories were in the 70s. My sister who was 10 years older than me would cook biscuits on Sunday and we would eat them with honey and watch a movie like this!
Such a beautiful movie. So lovely in every aspect. A much more noble, innocent, and heart-warming time. Hidden away deep in the heart of man, now. Yet, one day to be reborn. God speed that day!
I have never seen this movie before. I will be watching it again!!! It was made in a perfect way! Love the chemistry between the older couple!! Thanks for sharing!!!
I love me some old-time atmospheric black-and-white horror! So glad I found this treasure trove of classic British films. Dennis Price cuts a suave and elegant figure as the love interest. Kind Hearts and Coronets, his delicious walk on the dark side, was still a few years in the future.
Im so glad you mentioned Dennis Price. I was saying in an earlier post that the biography of him Price Of Fame is excellent. I love him too in School for Scoundrels as one half of a couple of dodgy car showroom dealers trying to get Ian Carmichael to buy the horrendous Swiftmobile !
@@one4allfour1 Years ago, I tried to get a copy of either the VHS version or the DVD version, and discovered it wasn't available on either format. Turner Classic Movies said there was a problem with the heirs who owned the rights to the film. At some point, the issue was resolved, and the film was released on both VHS and DVD. Then streaming took over and once again, the film is almost impossible to find. If enough people request the film, it will show there's enough interest to generate revenue for the advertisers. Keep asking, and eventually, someone will find a way to stream it.
I loved that one as well. It was one of my late mother's favorite when she saw it as a teen. This movie is good, the first scene with the speaking tube is very memorable.
The Uninvited IMO is the best ghost story ever put on film. The atmosphere is so thick you could cut it with a knife and the scene of Milland and Hussey holding the candelabra by the upstairs railing in the middle of the night, listening to Mary Meredith crying somewhere off in the house makes my hair stand on-end just thinking about it.
Thank you for this movie 🎬. When I was a little girl and especially not feeling well, my mom and I wood cuddle up on the sofa and find an " old" movie for me to watch. I loved every part of them, especially the dresses. As I got into my teens, I was able to raid my mom's old cedar chest and wore her clothes from the mid 30's to mid 40's! After all these years people still remember me for my " bohemian" style of dress when it was actually just my mom's clothes and not very many bell bottom pants that was the style in my teenage years.
What fun to watch James Mason playing an elderly man when he was actually quite young! He is one of my favorites. I had never seen this film. Thank you!!
+Lily Marie He did do a really good job as a creaky-old man ;-) I love that it always looked like his clothes were just a mite too big on him...like he was trying to wear his Dad's clothes. Pretty adorable. And you're so welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed this, Lily Marie!
James Mason was quite believable in this role! Wish he were still alive so I could tell him how much I enjoyed his portrayal while still young... It was a prediction of his artistry of his profession and craft that he went on to entertain us with over the years. Maybe in keeping with the theme of this film that he can sense our praise from another "world"! Thank you for sharing this, I never heard of it. 🧓🙏🌌🇺🇸🎥🎭
At long last… a gothic ghost story, with a happy ending!! Lovely and talented cast… I shall watch it again, many times! Thank you for this! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 P.S… btw! What was the name of this lost jewel of a film?
Wow. I'm stunned. Imagine that! A really enjoyable movie start to finish and not a drop.of blood or one single cussword! These movies are the best thank you 😊
Hi There. James Mason and Elizabeth Mullen Played the Perfect Parts as An Elderly Couple. It Was A Very Good Movie. As They All Were at That Time. Thank You So Much.🤗⚘🤗⚘🤗⚘🤗⚘
This was a nice movie. It is nice that Elizabeth finally received peace. When Dr. Marsham died, I believe Elizabeth and the doctor met up with each other. It was nice hearing that the Abbotts, the caretakers or guardians, drowned in the Atlantic Ocean. Now, everyone can live happily ever after!!!
Well I'm going to give it a try I've always liked the old black and white movies like this one funny they have all their special effects they use to make movies and they never come close to these old classics and the ladies back then were so beautiful and sexy and that's sexy with class. Peace and GOD Bless You From Saginaw Michigan Dontoons
Those old Gainsborough studio films sure take me back, thank you 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😊 Fantastic cast here too! 😊😊👍👍 As well as the great James Mason, the so very beautiful Margaret Lockwood in her gorgeous prime ….and…a youthful Dennis Price trim and slim at the beginning of his brilliant career too 😊😊😊
Thank you. The entire cast is enjoyable. The main characters are very charming. The story is a refreshing change from the type of ghost story that relies on gore and contrived jump scares.
This was wonderful! James Mason, one of my favorite actors, playing a part so unlike the ones I have seen him play over the years. I loved it!! Thank you!
Brilliant movie. Absolutely enjoyed it. Thank you for uploading this. No swearing, nothing vulgar just a brilliant worth watching movie. Please do upload more.
In my opinion the classic ghost story is.... is there a ghost?, the climax of the story builds and at the end of the movie, yes maybe there was not a ghost, but then there was something. Excellent movie, a classic!
What a great old movie. Talented actors. Beautiful sets and scenery. Wonderful story. Worth watching again and again... and i will be. Love never dies. Thank you so much for presenting this for us.
Thank you for uploading this delightful film... they sure don't make 'em like they used to. A good illustration of how a normal, civil society behaves.
Delightful! However, one odd thing I noticed. Nearly 40 years after appearing in this movie , James Mason appeared in the film “Salem’s Lot “. He was a protector of the villainous vampire, named Mr. Barlow. The police inspector in this film that Mason’s character had dealt with was named…Barlow…
What an Absolutely Marvelous Ghost Story! I'd Never seen this one & it was Very Enjoyable! It was just the Very kind of Ghost Story I Truly Love! I so glad I got to see it! The Actors & the Setting had just the right Atmosphere to enhance this Script! Thank you so much for the Great Movie!
What a gem! The movie kept getting better as it went, and more engrossing. I've watched a number of "haunted house" movies, mostly to be disappointed. This one didn't. Try and come up with something this good today Hollywood, and do it with the budget limits that this one had. I was so attached at the end I burned a cheese sandwich on the stove! Forgot all about it. Thanks for putting this on.
thank you for sharing I could understand you getting distracted from cooking!! Hollywood has gone downhill for years!! They NEED to take notes on this film and so many old films for improvements!!!!
Some of this lady’s experiences has happened to me and still do believe me it’s NO joke you can’t explain it To people who doesn’t understand it OR experience it them selfs , to the extent that I’ve spoken about it to The church. 🙏💜❤️💐 LOVE, RESPECT AND BLESSINGS TO THEE ,AMEN 💐💐💐💝🥰🌠
+Ellen-Cathryn Nash Yay! I'm glad I was able to upload this for you to watch :) It is a good movie; the actors and actresses are some of my favorites, too. I've always liked James Mason. I think he did a good job playing an old man, since he was much younger than the character. I loved the way he walked---creaky (creakily?), the way my husband does ;-D
What is so excellent about these old gothic movies, is they make you use your imagination when a haunting scene is taking place……which sometimes is worse than seeing the actual haunting!

@@one4allfour1 I thought it was. One thing, if you are interested, the old Radio Lux Theater program has it as a radio play. Ray Milland is in it.
Extraordinary performance by James Mason who, here, plays a man twice his age... and looks so very real!
One of my favourites - love James Mason
OMG....James Mason!!! Love his voice!
I thought he looked a little out of place lol, some of his make up looked off. Now I know why. And also who James mason is.
Hey 744o'clock
At long last… a gothic ghost story, with a happy ending!! Lovely and talented cast… I shall watch it again, many times! Thank you for this! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
P.S… btw! What was the name of this lost jewel of a film?
Wow. I'm stunned. Imagine that! A really enjoyable movie start to finish and not a drop.of blood or one single cussword! These movies are the best thank you 😊
I’m so glad you enjoyed this movie! I have many more like this on my Channel for you to watch👍🏼
Terrific film, and James Mason? He’s terrific too. Oh and all the other actors. ❤️
My favorite line, "Cars are all the rage an index of one's position in society".
Indeed!
And for some idiots they still are.
My first time seeing this. Now one of my all time favorites!
*A decent ghost story that I had never seen before.*
Eine ganz wunderbare Geistergeschichte.....so ein schöner alter Film, danke fürs hochladen😊
A wonderful movie. Just the right amount of spooky and played well by these great old names of Hollywood
This is England. Hollywood is in the United States. England makes movies, too.
@@garryferrington811 i know but they both worked as hollywood actors, whether happy of not that was my reference, no the location of the film :)
I love the way they rally together
I saw this about this about 30 years ago and I still love it. Unusual to see the wonderful James Mason playing a nice guy
This was wonderful! James Mason, one of my favorite actors, playing a part so unlike the ones I have seen him play over the years. I loved it!! Thank you!
That was a humdinger! Absolutely a joy.
This is really beautifully shot.
James Mason never disappoints. Great movie
He IS a wonderful actor! Have you seen him in "Pandora and The Flying Dutchman"? My all time favorite James Mason film!
000000000
The sound is working perfectly now! Thanks for fixing it!!
Brilliant movie. Absolutely enjoyed it. Thank you for uploading this. No swearing, nothing vulgar just a brilliant worth watching movie. Please do upload more.
Love this movie!!.an oldie but an evergreen. Great acting . Loved the twist at the end. This is what movies should be.
In my opinion the classic ghost story is.... is there a ghost?, the climax of the story builds and at the end of the movie, yes maybe there was not a ghost, but then there was something.
Excellent movie, a classic!
Wonderful movie. Superb acting. A true ghost story without any blood gore sex violence or swearing. Too bad those days are gone.
LOVW OLD MOVIES, GHOST MOVIES ARE ONE MY FAVORITE!!!!
What a great old movie. Talented actors. Beautiful sets and scenery. Wonderful story. Worth watching again and again... and i will be. Love never dies. Thank you so much for presenting this for us.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this Classic!
Extraordinary that James, why if it weren't for his voice, he would be almost unrecognizable, and that ending, what eerie supernatural twist! Bravo!
Good old classics the best.
Thank you for this lovely movie James Mason was a wonderful actor.💞
Thank you very much... You're a real Peach!
Not to mention, no interruptions
A definite Ace in my books...
Thumbs up & subbed
Thank you for uploading this delightful film... they sure don't make 'em like they used to. A good illustration of how a normal, civil society behaves.
I watched it again. What a pleasure to see Mason in this role of an elderly retired gentleman. And the script, setting and direction are fine, too!
Good looking out! I never realized that!
Wow
I was just watching Salem's Lot last night. Barlow and Straker terrify me just like they did when I was a kid. What an amazing coincidence!
Interesting!
"Salem's Lot" scared the daylights out of me. That movie is truly terrifying.
Wonderful movie 🎥. I love these black and white films. Characters are awesome. Kept me connected the entire time. Thank you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏
What a lovely little gem of a movie. Great little ghost story! Well-written and wonderfully acted. Perfect way to while away a cold, wintery day.
Couldn't agree more!
I love artfully crafted black and white films from gainesboro always a pleasure to watch over and over again 💗
Really loved this movie, loved James Mason, all his movie are wonderful 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤗😊🎥
This is one of my favourite all time movies ❤❤❤❤
I watch many black and white films, not seen this one. Excellent, thank you.
You’re so welcome, Susannah!
If you scroll through my largest Playlist you may find many other “new” Classics to enjoy🍿🧋

To people who doesn’t understand it OR experience it them selfs , to the extent that I’ve spoken about it to
The church. 🙏💜❤️💐 LOVE, RESPECT AND BLESSINGS TO THEE ,AMEN 💐💐💐💝🥰🌠
wonderful old film ,i liked this more than a lot of modern horror films ..sad tale with justice .thank you for putting this up
GOSH...loved James Mason's acting plus his skill with words...tx for this gem...hadn't seen it before either.
Thank you so much for the great movie.
Austanding actor James Mason.
❤
I am a huge fan of both Margaret Lockwood and James Mason. A Place of One's Own is one of my faves. Thanks for this.
