That's good coaching. Coaches push you, but at the right amount. It sometimes feels like they're dressing you down, but only bad ones actually do that (dress down with constantly too much pressure and/or the wrong coaching). Good ones (even military drill instructors, though especially them), their "dressing down" is intended to keep just the right amount of motivational pressure on you. Just like that muscular burn when you're working out: it's not feeling good, and you'reuncomfortable, but it IS good you just gotta push through it.

Before watching this channel I did stick to scheme 'some carbs per hour when on a bike' and had bonked several times having too long breaks. After watching some videos here I tried to take in some carbs every 15-20 minutes and boy, it appears I'm able to steadily go for hours and don't feel exhausted after ride (sure, refuelling myself properly after ride). That really made a huge difference. Thanks for advice!

I follow a low carb diet and intermittent fasting, this brings down insulin resistance and trains the body to burn fat which is a much more plentiful source of energy, I eat nuts and banana at 10am and then a salad at lunch with cheese, eggs and either fish or some left over meat from the previous nights dinner like a piece of roast chicken, then i have dinner at 6pm which is a good quality meat, or fish with green veg and butter, i only use butter or ev olive oil, i avoid grains, rice, pasta, bread and if i have a snack in the afternoon it's an apple or some almonds i avoid food after 6pm so i can get 16 hours of fasting to bring down the insulin level, this diet has me loosing fat whilst gaining muscle again at 54 and my power is now back up to levels i hit 10 years ago when i was doing 5 x the training time, my eyesight has also improved and my hair has stopped going grey and the tooth decay has gone, if i cut myself i heal in heal in a couple of days again. be careful eating for more than 8 hours a day as it can lead to insulin resistance and the human body is not built for this pattern, the issue many people probably face is too little fat and quality meat protein and toxic processed food.

I am about 15 years younger than you but I follow the same protocol and it works great. Just by cutting out all refined sugars and ultra-processed "food", and sticking to real food and 2 or 3 meals per day, will enable fat adaptation, drive up growth hormone, keep blood sugar steady, and many other things. It really is that simple: eat real food, avoid snacking.

Low carb plant based I can understand...high meat diets are not good for long-term health..
The low carb community is full of misinformation. ie butter good vegetable oil bad ...the science says the opposite...
The meat industry is investing 💰 millions to promote meat heavy diets. Just look at the mortality rate of health influencers that die you...plant chomper has done some videos on this topic...
      Take care

@@lisagreenberg5020 There's only one cause for insulin resistance: glucose. It exists in sugar and carbs, keep those to a minimum, no insulin resistance.

It’s worrying how other cycling channels are pushing rediculous carb per hour supplements that amazingly match what a sponsor says. I will say cycling has screwed my eating, it’s taking really hard effort to getting back on track. Real food, regularly (the regularly part is my biggest problem) thanks for not selling me a fix it powder.

Making homemade oat and peanut butter flapjacks with mashed banana as binder instead of oil in another good strategy to keep topped up on good whole food carbs and protein.

You’re correct. Don’t be surprised if you get tons of comments like “I rode 100 miles without any carbs” or “do your research… go carnivore!” or “carbs aren’t a necessary nutrient.” That’s all I ever see on my channel if I’m caught eating (gasp!!) an apple or something like that. I think you’re correct.

I used to be you, but then life changed as I got older. And I realized everyone else's pain in how easy it was to get fat.
Your state is a blessing in disguise, actually. You need to be eating MORE but of nutrient-rich foods.
I'll bet despite having trouble gaining weight that you still have a fair bit of fat on you. That fat is not dense (less weight per volume). If you burn off that volume in exchange for the same volume of muscle, you'll see a weight gain and no change in your size.
Lifting will help tremendously with muscle mass gain. Start doing weight lifting off the bike that targets your quads (for power), your glutes (biggest muscle in the body and necessary for stability on the bike), pectorals, triceps, and core (also stability, and so you don't have disproportionate skinny cyclist arms 😂). Also back muscle exercises for stability and increased reduction in vertebral rotation and restriction (the discomfort you go to a chiropractor to treat).
Also, I think you can identify with Coach Scott more than you realize. Look at him. He's a tiny, skinny twig! Pretty sure he's had issues putting on weight too.

He's not talking about eating a fish supper, then a cheese burger, then a bowl of ice cream, then a big dinner. It's eating little and often. It actually stabilises your blood sugar. It stops you getting hungry. Stops you eating 3 big meals per day. Our ancestors would have gorged on what they could kill, find etc . But we've kina moved on a bit from then 😂

Ancestors almost certainly ate for long periods because the bulk of their food came from low calorie plant foods which took a long time to actually pick and eat. Take a look at gorillas, apes and what not.
But that's not really relevant because we have massive studies on human nutrition that show we regulate our own calorie intake naturally when eating whole plant foods. Eating fake processed foods and tons of meat make it less straightforward.
