      Why’d you go through 4 years of your engineering and 1-2 years of your masters in engineering before you finally felt comfortable with it?
      Was it pure stubbornness to maintain course of action?

    • @skyrangerbob
      @skyrangerbob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@VwapTrader I have always been "comfortable" with engineering, but furthering my formal education took me to a much higher level. The patent I just submitted solved a physical problem that can be modeled as an infinite number of coupled differential equations with an infinite number of parasitic poles. I compensated the circuit with an infinite number of parasitic zeros. Solving the model involved complex nodal analysis, and implementing a physical solution involved building an FEA model. I would not have solved this with only the BSEE. The Master's degree gave me a lot of new tools to work with.

    • @hisholiness4537
      @hisholiness4537 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VwapTrader I'd say by the time you start your Master's, you've gotten used to working hard and having fun with it, too.
      If, for some reason, you still don't like what you're doing by then, you could choose some classes having to do with the other engineering majors.
      Chances are, if you like maths and physics, you're bound to find something to like. That's why you should always try to choose the broadest majors (ME, EE, IE) to have at least some idea of what most majors do and don't do.
      Internships are also a must. If you don't like the actual work your major has then that's a sign you should consider another engineering field.
      The sooner you get a picture for what sort of things you like, the more success you'll have in your career.

    This gives me a little hope. I majored in chemical engineering (I thought it would be much more math intensive than it was. I like the exotic maths, but all I got was the occasional integral). I applied for a ton of jobs, had a few interviews but didn't get a single offer. I was depressed for about a year trying to figure out how I felt about it with all the family pressure and everything. It's been 1.5 years since I graduated and I now have a retail job because I need money to go into math which is what I've always wanted to study.

    Security clearance not coming through; Yosemite on your screen saver. Hmmmm.

  • @mattbell888
    @mattbell888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Getting clearance is expensive, and your company pays a lot for it. They might not give you a good word for your next job as a result, because in their eyes, they invested heavily in your future at the company and you just left. Having clearance also makes you incredibly marketable, and can open up big opportunities. If you start process on getting clearance, you (generally) should wait it out.
    However, this is not me criticizing your decision, ultimately I don't know the full circumstances and I firmly believe that being happy is more important than a fatter paycheck. And you said it yourself, don't trust just one reddit post or one youtube video for rock solid life advice. I just want to echo that sentiment and present another perspective. So if someone's looking in the comments not sure if they should wait it out or not, consider that your company is just as miffed as you are that they can't use you yet while paying you and paying for your clearance. They likely have done all they can to speed up the process. You should discuss (and sounds like Zach did) what other work can be done in the meantime, or maybe look to make your own. If you like the people there, and are excited about the work you were promised, sticking it out can have pretty big benefits. If you change companies down the line, you'll already have the clearance, so the new company won't need to pay for it vs. a fresh grad hire.

    I don't know the situation in the US, but here bachelor engineers basically do office jobs. No projects, no testing. Just paper work, maybe some coding/AUTOCAD but the jobs are really crappy. Without a master you're basically treated as an high school graduates and you can't work that effectively. At least here in Germany getting a master is free, so it's easy to study 2 years more but i know the US is pretty expensive in terms of... everything.

    In any job discipline, finding a powerful mentor is essential. If the mentor is also your supervisor so much better. In your first job you were sidelined by clearance issues but a few phone calls from your mentor to the clearance agency or above would have resolved any issues quickly. You'd at least learn what the problem was... relationships with odd-ball organizations, radical friends or even having suspect relatives. Even foreign travel can be a factor which could be easily explained, but without a benefactor you'd never know about it. A few well-spoken words from him/her and the issue is illuminated for you, which you wouldn't learn about if you were on your own. Getting in "the club" isn't difficult but you have to be "bright-eyed and bushy-tailed" ... in other words, personable and enthusiastic about the corporation's "mission".

    Would you recommend anything on getting into defense industry positions? I’m a sophomore mechanical engineer and I’m interning at a large instrumentation company this summer so I’d come into this potential defense job with at least one internship and junior/senior level classes under my belt. Thanks!

    • @zachstar
      @zachstar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing that those companies liked the most on my resume was the fact that my senior project was one funded by one of the large defense companies (it was a UAV sense and avoid system). The fact that I had experience with that really helped I think because it was the main talking point in most of the interviews that I had. So whether it be a project or internship related to the defense industry, I think that's really helpful.

    Engineering not the job. Job is doing to commercial earn something. Engineering is what you do as projects and achievements. Job and engineering differ like that. Engineer post is how you achieve in projects. Engineering graduation is a one step in engineering but most essential for engineering activities.

    There appears to be a trend of engineers hating their jobs and leaving. I guess the universities over sold their programs or corporate structures really sucks. I guess there would be more engineers becoming entrepreneurs now or should I say hopefully. Most engineering task anyways is building systems, once the system is build the companies do not really need the designers and only need a couple of engineers to maintain the system. Mechanical and Electrical industries will soon be like the Civilian Infrastructure business, contracts only.
