The books do not specify if Percy and Cordelia had a relationship. However, Percy hold James's mom in very high regard, and was her driver since she was 20 and started working at the company. Ruby (and at some pint Lydia) later suspects that Percy had feelings for Cordelia, and tells James. He is not wild about that but accepts it and Percy is always a family friend.
SPOILER ahead. Percy is the keeper of smth that Cordelia trusted him with long time ago. And in the end gives it to James, and it helps saving the situation that seemed hopeless for Cordelia's kids.
As a fellow cook reader I would say that I mostly agree although I would argue it is heavily implied they had a relationship. I think the show is playing on that even harder than the books because when the kids leave for Oxford Claudia looks at Percy and then Mortimer and seems to have regrets or remorse. I also think that was the point of the convo with the drunk James.
Part of the dead silence from him is because his father gets info from people at school, so there's nowhere at school to safely talk without it getting back to his dad. The order for suspension came from his dad, after all. His dad is in business with the Ellingtons and has an in with the daughter because he tried to set her up with James in that deal. He's a major donor and likely gets regular reports from James' teachers and the headmaster. There are references to this in earlier episodes. It's horrible and painful, but she doesn't know yet exactly how abusive and evil Mortimer truly is. James really doesn't want her to have to find out the way he likely did. There's obviously good reason why he and Lydia are both terrified of him and massively messed up emotionally. That doesn't happen from one altercation with a teenager. That's trauma from long-term abuse since childhood. It also provides clues as to the unhealthy relationship between Lydia and Sutton that will probably get explored more next season.
I think Percy's just s a trusted member of staff. Treating someone well and with love and kindness doesn't automatically follow from a blood relationship. It's very common that many domestic staff have a more parental relationship with their charges than the actual family members do and I think it cheapens that by implying that the only reason Percy is nice to James is because they're related by blood
I completely agree! I never implied that Percy was related to James by blood, I thought maybe the mom & Percy had a relationship in the past but it seems that was just a rumor 😂
James is not his son but as a book reader it is implied heavily that Percy and the mom were together before she married Mortimer. The show is playing heavily on that when the kids leave for Oxford she looks at Percy and then Mortimer theoretically regretting her choice.
the father did investigation on Ruby. but when he first met her in ep3 he already knew she's a 'poor girl '
This is a good episode, but really the most depressing roller-coaster of an episode.

i feel like he was so mean on purpose to make sure she would never try to talk to him again and keep her distance. Being nice would have had the opposite reaction and maybe she would have fought more? Idk ^^
