Kurapika did it in a controlled way, while Gon just said "f*ck it. let's kill this b*tch and i'm out of this life", which gave him all the power he would've been able to get through his entire life, something only he would've been able to achieve thanks to his immense talent and his heavily affected mind. What Gon did isnt comparable to Kurapika at all. Kurapika has harsh restrictions, but as long as he follows them he won't die. Gon got to the point where he could maybe defeat even Meruem with his power. Meruem is far stronger than even the strongest Nen user in the show Netero just to make the contrast to how much strong Gon actually got. Gons restrictions and also sacrifices to gain that power would have led him to his death. Also what Gon did was only possible with him considering his immense talent and resolve to defeat Pitou.

To be fair, Kurapika is just as self-destructive as Gon, he just does it in a more gradual, subtle way rather than the sudden explosion that Gon often does, because he is very methodical and has clear plans for what he needs to do. But in the end Kurapika still doesn't value his life and is effectively throwing away his future.

"In what situation would you hurt yourself?"
"When... you can't forgive yourself." - Gon, episode 110/chapter 262.
What makes this episode so special is how it brings together the culmination of so many things: Gon's character arc and insecurities, Killua's helplessness towards their relationship, Pitou's endless loyalty towards Meruem, and the Nen system that allows all of this to manifest in such brilliant and unique ways.
The first thing to be noted is, when Gon says "Liar.", as his Nen starts to build up, the most surface level interpretation of this is that he is talking to Pitou and taking his anger out on her, but I believe this is only one half of it. Gon is also talking to himself there, after all he was the one who made such a big promise to both Killua and Kite that he will bring Kite back no matter what, and now he found out that he could not live up to his words. As we have seen in other episodes Gon cares very much about both the promises he receives and gives, he does not forgive anyone betraying his trust and at the same time, he would not forgive himself for failing to fulfill a promise. This was Gon's punishment to both himself and Pitou.
Gon's transformation being that of an adult form is so well thought out. Think about it, throughout the whole show Gon's greatest wish was to become "strong" and not feel like a helpless child like he did when Kite saved him, and Kite was the ideal "adult" in his life, the one he was striving to be like this whole time. Nen responds to emotions, so in this moment where Gon feels more like a helpless child than ever, it is so symbolic to have his transformation be that of an adult. It's represents the ideal version of himself that he sought after, and I love there is a contrast between the transformation sequence being completely dark and monstrous, reflecting how unnatural and forceful this process is, and the actual result being brilliant and perfect.
The translation was not quite accurate when Pitou says that his power is equal to the King, what they actually say is "Just as I thought, his fangs could reach the King!", calling back to their previous thought in episode 125. Regardless the comparison stands and Gon was a clear threat.
What makes the beatdown so chilling is Gon's complete coldness, even when he is charging his Jajanken, there is hardly any emotion, just the cold, raw desire to kill. Even when he is finishing the job he shows no passion. He is not filled with rage but rather the emptiness of fulfilling what he believes to be his duty to Kite (and Ging by extension).
The Anime's direction adds a contrast between this scene and the scene of Gon standing in front of Genthru (the Bomber)'s defeated body at the end of Greed Island, that was a triumphant victory for Gon, but this one is anything but.
What adds so much dimension to this whole conflict is the sheer genuineness and depth of Pitou's devotion to the King, often we see the power of bonds and friendship aid the protagonists/heroes against their antagonists/villains, but this is a rare case where it's actually the other way around; the antagonists' bonds gave them power while the protagonists' bonds failed them, and that is such brilliant writing showing how these concepts aren't exclusive to the people we perceive as "good guys".
"It's okay, it doesn't hurt. I'm not trying to be tough. I'm kind of happy... I finally get to be the same as Kite was then. I feel like I've been redeemed some." And there it is, Gon revealing his true mental state this whole time, he was trying to atone for what he believed to be his own failure to measure up. In the Manga, the panel where he says this shows a clear sadness on his face, which contrasts him saying he is "happy", because in reality he is broken. This entire time Gon could not once admit that he was hurting because he had to be strong like Kite, he can't afford to be vulnerable.
And poor Killua, having to helplessly watch all of this unfold, it's almost a cruel joke for Togashi to write this scene after having Palm tell him that he is the one Gon needs the most after his emotional breakdown. But I believe this holds an important message; you cannot save someone who does not want to be saved, and you should not attach your worth to your ability to do so or lack thereof. Gon made his decision a long time ago and nothing Killua could have said would have reached him. What's done is done and Killua had to learn this the hard way. The fact that this is the first interaction between Gon and Killua since "Because this has nothing to do with you." just adds a mountain of salt to the wound.
The final shot of this episode is so haunting... Gon finally revealing how much he is hurting in the last second right before being enveloped in light. This is the ultimate conclusion to Killua's "Gon, you are the light. Sometimes you shine so brightly that I have to look away.". The episode is titled "Anger X And x Light" and ends with Gon enveloped with light more than ever before, to the point where it burned him away, which I think symbolizes how this tragic turn of events was a result of Gon trying too hard to become the ultimate Hunter whom everyone could look up to, he burned too brightly and nothing was left but ashes.

Can i just say, what a wonderfully thought out analysis. As these two say a number of times throughout the latter portion of this arc, it is just astounding that this is the same show where we were merrily travelling along with our protagonists as they are taking the hunter exams, and doing traditional shonen "friendship" stuff. I have to imagine that, for all the criticism he receives for constantly being on haitus, the time Togashi is away from the pen is not without gain. This takes planning and reflection that cannot easily be achieved when creating a traditional weekly shonen manga, and I am grateful that the waiting resulted in such a beautiful product. All that being said, I am so invested in the current arc and dying to see it come back, but if we never do see anything further, i am grateful we received what we have.

Gon can't go into that state again, because he hasn't "used" his Nen, in a way in which it can be restored with a nap. He used his "potential Nen". He didn't have that power at that time, but he sacrificed everything he was once going to have to achieve one specific thing. Before more people come harping about "mistranslation," Pitou saying that Gon's power is "now equal to that of the King" is a correct translation based on the original Japanese manga. In the manga, what Pitou says can be translated as Gon's "abilities/fangs have now reached the King," with abilities and fangs conveyed as a double meaning using furigana and kanji (like with Netero saying malice/evolution). So the phrase can be interpreted both as Gon's power level reaching the King's, and Gon's metaphorical fangs reaching the King. Emphasizing the Gon's power level makes more sense because Gon and the other humans are already viewed as threats by Pitou so letting us directly know how powerful Gon is and the level of sacrifice he must have made hits much harder.

This episode is titled with "anger and light". We obviously see the anger, but where is the light?
Remember the episode Kite was killed? That one was titled "Light and Darkness". I bet all of you understood it as "Gon is the light, shining apon Killua's darkness". Ha, now you may see the different meaning and the full circle, right?
Gon appears to be the light. But the seed of true darkness was already planted inside Gon by then. After so many episode, we should found that Killua is the pure one, no matter what he thinks of himself. Killua turned out to be the true heart of the two. Killua is the light.
Gon is now long gone, fully consumed by hatred and darkness. Killua is the light, which sadly cannot shine through the darkness of Gon.

A pet peeve i have with the hxh fandom is when they say that it doesn't make sense for gon to care so much about kite in this version of the story, because he didn't tell gon to be a hunter when he was a kid. I get why they say it, but it misses the most important detail from this ep, and the whole show: gon cares for Kite because he cares about Ging
when they take the plane to ngl, gon has a conversation with killua about what they'll do if something happens to kite, as kite's wish is for gon and killua to run if that happens, and gon says "that's not what Ging would've wanted", which makes sense right? because kite is the person Gon wants to be: someone strong enough to fend off by themselves, and someone who has found ging and is respected by him. gon takes this mission as a test to himself, to prove that he's strong in order to not feel the crushing guilt of kite dying for his fault, which would also mean he's a failure to his father. if kite wasn't his fathers apprentice, he'd also feel guilty, but he'd 100% not react the same, he told killua in the palace that "you're calm because this has nothing to do with you", as gon sees this mission as something that proves his worth
at the end when he says that "im just like kite was back then", that line was different in the manga, it's "in the end I can be *just like kite*", which holds more meaning i'd say, because it doesn't just mean Gon lost his arm just like Kite, but that he brute forced his way into becoming the person he wanted to be, if not the strongest hunter alive, even if just for a few minutes. its one of those moments that, the more you think about it, the more meaning it has and the more it reflects about the story and its morals

    • @jacoblindquist7493
      @jacoblindquist7493 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Yeah, I also find it annoying when people "don't understand" Gon's reaction. It's like they forget he's a child, has abandonment issues, and has lost who was effectively the only father figure he's ever known - and only tangible connection to his real father. Although I do agree that this show messed up by not having Kite in the 1st episode; keeping it would've forecast the importance of Kite a little more, since Kite dying is like the foundation of Gon's identity being destroyed out from underneath him.
Also, I like what you said about Gon caring for Kite because he cares about Ging. I'm reminded of Pitou's answer for why she saves Komugi: "This person is someone important to someone important to me." How the show can be that explicit and still some don't understand Gon befuddles me.

The problem is the 2011 version made a big mistake when they made Gon forget about Kite. Both in the manga and in the 1999 version Gon not only remembers Kite very fondly throughout the whole story, but he mentions him more than once before meeting him again. The impact Kite had on Gon is unfortunately a little bit lost in 2011 because of this, it’s still puzzling why they left those scenes out.

"I don't care... if this is the end. So I will use everything, and kill you PITOU"
Some of us take this phrase leading up to his transformation to be a Nen contract, he offered anything and everything in return for being allowed to use all that power until Pitou was destroyed. And now we are left to wonder what exactly the universe decides the price of this power is.
This episode has fantastic music as well, loved seeing you guys shrink back from the transformation scene and later the screeching violins as he charged up his jajanken. This episode has been foreshadowed pretty much since the beginning of the show, any time where Gon has acted with reckless abandon has been leading up to this moment

Nice call back to the beginning of the arc, when Gon was about to be bit by the ant in the cave, because he dropped his guard, as he gets saved again, but this time he loses his arm like Kite did. Masterpiece

Interesting arc. The protagonist (Gon) slowly losing his humanity, whilst the King (antagonist) has been discovering his humanity, through Komugi. We learn that the royal guards have human traits too. Loyalty and sacrifice. Also, Killua whilst running to Gon, you can hear his footsteps and the noises the bushes make, when throughout the show Killuas movements have always been silent and quiet. Killuas assassin instincts were overloooked compared to his growing bond with Gon.

It's weird how Gon learn everything from his Previous fights, for example, his fight With knuckle stayed thirty days without Nen ... made him get the idea of using all his nen ... It is just like He tried.
Living without nen And it wasn't that bad

as much as I love black sails, Hunter x Hunter is just levels above, you cannot even compare those two, and this episode proved it again.

The way I've been told to understand what Gon did is that normally, with most abilities and powers, you can set conditions to make your powers more effective. Basically, the person says "Universe, i would like to set condition X for this ability, and in exchange i would like for it to be more powerful by a factor of Y, based on how restricting the X condition is". Then, because you figured it out, and set the condition/price to pay for that extra power, you get it. However what Gon did was write a blank check. He didnt set a condition and request for more power, he said "Universe, I want power Y and I'm going to take it. I dont care what condition or price X you want me to pay, as long as i pay it after I use this power to kill Pitou".
Which is insane when you think about just how much power he had to take to do that
