Came out during a breakup, my instant reaction to the front lyrics were " YES! YES! Someone gets it!! Someone has felt it! " The lyrics coupled with the music captures it all for me. The presentation of video vs live performance isn't what hits my heart, I'll let others battle that out.

When this first came out, I had only casually heard it on the radio and it didn't catch my attention. But then I saw an acapella version by Matthias Harris and really fell in love with the song. He not only sang the music, but literally was beating on his chest or cheeks to make the percussion sounds. I now really like both versions. Gotye, pronounced "gow · tee · ay" is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, on occasion, performs solo, or in this case a duet. His full-time gig is with the group "The Basics".
My analysis of the meaning of the song is different than most. There are 3 individuals depicted here. He and 2 women. He sings about the first one in his opening stanza. He told himself she was right for him but still felt lonely in her company and that's an ache he still feels to this day. He got addicted to the sadness of knowing it was going to end and when it did she promised they would still be friends. She lied, she just wanted to get away from him. Why? When they broke up she did everything she could to distance herself from him. He begins whining about how unfair and hurtful that was. He tries to comfort himself by saying he doesn't need that aggravation.
Enter girl number 2, Kimbra. She got involved with him after his breakup with girl number 1. At this point, they have already separated. Why? He kept screwing her over and making her believe it was her fault. This is probably the same reason girl number 1 dumped him. She didn't want to live with someone like that. On top of that, he said he could let his breakup with girl number 1 go, and "SHE WOULDN'T CATCH HIM HUNG UP ON SOMEBODY THAT HE USED TO KNOW". She could read into his words and actions that he obviously could not. So he dumped him too.

I have always wondered if anyone else heard the double entendre of the phrase, "somebody that I used to know." which could also be for an ex lover said like, "some body that I used to know". The second possible meaning of that phrase being more physical. I used to know your body, or as in the first one more emotional, you were someone I used to know. I LOVE this song and loved your reaction thank you!

Hey Britt, this is such a creative song with interesting production. Unfortunately, he hasn't had another hit despite the success and exposure of this song (at least I don't know of one). Kimbra is an incredibly talented singer, songwriter and producer from New Zealand. If you liked the quirkiness of this song and her voice, I would definitely check out her solo material. I know you like live performances, so I would recommend checking out one of her "live in studio" performances that were recorded at Sing Sing Studios in Australia. She recorded 5 songs during the live studio session (4 originals and Plain Gold ring, a Nina Simone cover) and they are all fantastic, but I'd probably recommend Good Intent and Settle Down (they both have "high quirkiness" 😁). Here's the link for the playlist of the Sing Sing performances if you're interested (the list also includes 2 official videos at the end for some reason)...... th-cam.com/play/PLC89AA426DB742123.html

Gladly, it's not really unfortunate, as Gotye has said he never meant for this song or for any of his work to get as huge as it did. He prefers life away from the limelight.
