As a Norwegian myself...this is a tribute. :) Egeland is a living legend.

I totally agree, this is not a parody. Egeland is one of those guys who really deservers a Nobel peace price

Jan Egeland said in an interview that he was unaware of this video until one day when he was in a UN meeting in New York with lots of high level diplomats and other leaders from various countries. They were there to discuss civil unrest and human rights in Africa I think it was, when one guy was like hey Jan, look what I found. And then they played the video in front of everyone and everyone laughed their asses off.
As far as his thoughts on the song. He said he was flattered and that it was a very well made song. And as far as cultural status, hes just a guy we used to see on the tv looking at maps with George Cloon, or read about when he was trying to broker some deal. So he just a b-celebrity and a normal guy.

He knew about the song cause his nephew was at the stadium were they filmed parts of the video. He's nephew sent him a text saying that Ylvis was on stage and people was shout out his name.

The Ylvis brothers used to have a talkshow, where they sometimes performed songs. This very over the top production is apparently a reaction to a viewer sending them a complaint because they didn't wish Egeland happy birthday.
Egeland isn't really a celebrety, but a lot of people familiar with politics will be aware of him.

First Jan Egeland is a fking super hero, if you know you know. Other then that I was really pleasantly surprised over such a great reaction and analysis. Really proud over the Ylvis brothers, they make all theese things just to have fun stuff for theyre excellent tv show.

Great reaction and analyzis. Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Ylvis.😊 Would love to see you react to some more of their material such as Stonehenge, Old friends, The cabin, Massachusetts etc. They're masters of genre parodies and also great musicians and comedians.😊

I really appreciate that you called attention to the fact that the lyrics themselves in this song, is a bit silly, but the music is amazing. Ylvis has said in an interview that they love to joke around with the lyrics of their music, which they do to pretty much all of them, but they never jo with the music and production. That has to be played straight and be good. Which is obviously is.
The thing with this song is that Ylvis had a talkshow on Norwegian TV, and they had an episode on Jan Egeland's birthday, where they didn't say anything about it.... At this point, they had no idea who he was at that point. But then someone wrote them an e-mail, critizising them for that.
So then Ylvis researched him a bit and decided to make a tribute to him, as a response to that mail.
The big stage they play at in the video is in Jan's hometown of Stavanger.
Later on they had Jan at their talkshow, and he told them how his collegues at the UN played the song on the big screen for him at the end of a meeting because they thought it was funny.
    I really liked your reaction.

You said it right the first time around, they just pronounce his name “in english” as par of the joke.

The UN actually showed this music video when Jan Egeland was there 😂
As an American you should check out Massachuetts by Ylvis. Or my favourite, "Old friends" to see some dark Norwegian humour. You'll be shocked

Great comment and reaction! Actually, they pronounced "Jan Egeland" like English-speakers do. In Norwegian, you would pronounce "Jan" with J-sound like you say "Y" in "You".
    Really like your comments, though!

If I remember correctly, this song was created because Ylvis caught flack for not mentioning Jan Egeland's birthday on their TV-Show or something like that. So Ylvis did what Ylvis does.. to go all out and fix the situation.

Great reaction! Very good. Love Ylvis, they are incredible; comedians, songwriters, musicians, singers and TV show hosts all at the same time. Two of my favorites outside of their songs are when they impersonate Michael Jackson and Elvis...that is, they impersonate Norwegian Elvis impersonator Kjell-Elvis.

I think this says a lot about the political situation in Norway. Yes, you have people on the far left, yes you have people on the far right, and they are friends. Politically, you can be on two complete opposite sides, and you can vote for person A and I can vote for person B, but we still understand that both want what's best for the society as a whole - we just have differing opinions on how to reach that goal. There's this picture in Norway that became very famous outside of Norway, where politicians from the labor party, center party, and the green party together help a far-right party with rigging their equipment for a political festival in harsh rain. It just shows that we see the person behind the political beliefs.

FYI, the phrase "just like a h*mo" uses the Norwegian meaning, which is basically "gay guy". It used to only be a slur, but gay people used it themselves and made it ok.

Jan’s most known for being the General Secretary for UN and for leading the help after the Tsunami in Thailand 2004

it reminds me of early eminem in a way. in that he also would make great music, but also put on a superhero suit while preforming a masterpice with silly, but briliant lyrics in hiphop.

They are not afraid of offending people, but this one was more of a salute. Most of their songs are mocking something though.

You're closer to the correct pronounciation, but part of the bit is americanizing the name as part of the song.

Music wise a good song, subject wise I’m not so sure. I don’t think politicians good or bad make a great subject for a rock song. I did very much like your reaction to it though.👍🤘🤘
