    Good job and some good information , I add a shovel full of lime to the mix I find it floats up much easier render seems to bind better and rubs up easy even if you have a wall drying on you ,just my opinion 👍

    Great video, but would you recommend lime in the top coat, there is a lot of conflicting info on you tube especially for a beginner, also would you use waterproofer like sbr in the top coat

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, I’d only use waterproofer on the outside of a cavity wall. There’s no need for waterproofer on a wall like this or a retaining wall. I’ve had bad experiences with waterproofer when the wall can get wet from both sides. Lots of different opinions on this from people so this is just my view. As to lime, again it has its uses but I don’t currently use it.

    Lovely work and fab vid, thank you. I’m just about to do a top coat on my garden wall. Should I still use sharp sand? Or building? Or mix both? I’m concerned the top coat will be gritty if I use sharps. Cheers

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the kind words! I’m not sure what part of the world you’re in but here in Wales our building sand is different to England’s building sand so it’s hard to say for what you could use. I’d see what plastering sand your local merchants have as that would be your best option

    Hey mate I don't understand the render go first coat and second coat the second coat I used colouring but I render only one coat is that ok

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, scratch coat is to give it a good key and help to get it flatter if the wall is out of shape. You can do one coat but it’s harder to get it flat and you may have joints from the blocks showing through

  • @babakopoulo
    @babakopoulo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is this the brown plastering sir ? The ratio of sand and cement is the same to the scratch coat , 5/1 ? We cant go direct to the second part avoiding the scratc coat or scratch coat is absolut necessary ? For the ceiling is the same procedure ?

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t do a ceiling with this type of mix. Top coat is always weaker than scratch, scratch is 4:1 and top is 5:1. You can do a single coat if you wish so just the top coat as long as the wall is flat enough. The scratch can help you to get the wall flatter if it’s uneven

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean O Huiginn thanks! On a house I would use plasticiser (Feb) in the scratch and waterproofer in the top coat. Also on a house with a large area I’d try and get an expansion joint somewhere to prevent cracking. The bottom of the wall would just be filled with rubble and the stone to match the driveway on top

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just one thing to add is if you’re priming the block then ideally you’d do a thin scratch coat as your top coat might just ‘hang’ on the primer while you’re waiting for it to set a bit to float up….

      In a small area where I did the sbr sand cement mix didn't go off at all. I gave up using sbr and the other part of the wall if good.
      I followed insturctions. How can I remove the sbr now from the blocks ? I tried hosing as much as I can out but can still see the plaster doesn't go off

  • @julianhullis1567

    If you just want to freshen up an existing external, rendered wall can you skim it with a top coat like this or do you use a specific type of paster? It's an old wall that's been repaired a few times and is looking patchy.

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’d have to make sure the existing plaster is sound and not hollow or loose and then apply a bonding agent such as ‘renagrip’ so you can go over the existing plaster
