    Bonham had that funk that always eludes and surprises. Just when you think you’ve got the pattern down for one of his beats, he puts a groovy spin on it to better serve the song. His bass foot dynamics are insane here and add so much!

      And then on top of all that his base player is John Paul Jones.. What!!!!! what a combo.

    A lot of drummers thought that Bonzo was busier on this track-there’s a lot of space here. He occasionally does a quick double on the kick drum but he is generally sparse. What I learned early on (because I also play bass) is the muted thumping that JPJ does on the low E string. If you listen carefully, he does a “Mark King” style muted bass slap in the first part of the measure that sounds like a gallop, then bangs out a low E, and then proceeds to mute again but does a palm mute and picks the gallop sound with his first finger-it’s a subtle change but it blends so well with the drum part that they are one huge rhythm section. The muted thumb slap and palm muted pluck of the low E is pure JPJ GENIUS. This is why they sounded so amazing together-that chemistry to lock in or let loose or allow the other to let loose is unparalleled in rock music and often overlooked. Bands of today need to listen to this and learn from this. It wasn’t all about Bonzo on this track-Jonesy was playing his heart out alongside him, and they listened to one another and gracefully conversed musically and rhythmically.

      I couldn't have said it better, Michael! I think that's spot on to all of Zeppelin's catalog. Jonesy added so much color and thump to what Bonzo played, and on this track especially! It's understandable why so many people think Bonham is doing more with his kick here - Jones is so amazingly locked in and driving the song, as well as the bass dominating the mix over the kick, but it's mainly a true testament to two hearts beating as one; every rhythm section should aspire to what these two had together...

      "A lot of drummers thought that Bonzo was busier on this track"
      I think a good example of this would be Heart's Michael DeRosier on the song "Barracuda." Fortunately for him, that song isn't 10:26 long though 😃

  • @brian96597

    Holy cow! I could have sworn he was doing double 16ths on the kick on the 1st and 3rd. Phew! I was practicing that to no end and was very disappointed I could not keep that kind of tempo for very long. And 9:03 is when the freight train really starts rolling.

    • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's what I'm talking about! I know JPJ's bass part sort of blends in with the kick pattern, and it's easy to think the two are one in the same. It's invaluable hearing his drums on their own for how much space / groove his approach allows for! As impressive as it would be if he were throwing in those doubles as part of every phrase, it's tough not to think the song might feel a little more rigid if Bonham and Jones were playing the same thing throughout. Instead, I dig how Jones drives the song with the bass, and Bonham gets to push and pull like a battering ram...

    • @buschovski1
      @buschovski1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was thinking that too. Doubles that I thought werr the bass drum are Jones on bass and his percussive style on this. Played with a pick. Its amazing. Then the amazing thing is, Bonzo's bass drum work around 9 minutes. Proves he can do all the doubles he wants. And then some. WTF? Where did these people come from. Maybe he died cause he had to back to his planet cause they needed him again. And they(aliens) just lent him to Zeppelin for a while.

      That's because it's a Ludwig Supraphonic and they're notorious for it. I have an early 70's model and if I'm playing anything with rim shots I will have to tighten the tension rod directly under the hit spot after every other song. It's worth the battle for the sound.

      A lot of it depends on the style of music being played, but you're definitely on to something - I don't think anyone has ever approached guitar heavy music with so much Motown and R&B influence. Bonham is more or less playing an entirely different genre than the heavy/classic/blues rock that Zeppelin is categorized into. You want dynamics, and you've gotta be able to float on the beat like a feather, not just bash the hell out of the drums.

      @@KickItLikeBonham he was on fire in 1977. And while he never made to many mistakes, the ones I have heard on soundboards were really BAD elementary mistakes. If you listen to Houston 5/22/1977 during Sick Again... he screws up his own drum break, the part where he plays the fast triplets starting with the snare drum, then moving through each his toms playing those same fast triplets...
      He somehow ended up bring off an entire measure, which is something you wouldn't expect from him. But the really complicated stuff he did... he always nailed it. Like his drum break during Achilles Last Stand that isn't on he album. He always managed to nail that part
