The Tiruray Tribe of Sitio Kyamko | ExceLens

In celebration of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, #ExceLens zooms into the life of the Tiruray tribe residing at Sitio Kyamko in Datu Unsay, Maguindanao.
Also known as the Tedurays, the group belongs to the existing non-Islamic tribes and is considered as one of the major indigenous groups in Mindanao (read: bit.ly/33Bze9M)
While they are often considered as an honest and gentle group, various dangers threaten their peace as some live in strife-torn environments where armed lawless groups operate. As a result, they are dispersed, uprooted in their ancestral lands, and worst, killed.
In 2001, Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino Lt. Col. John Paul Baldomar rallied his troop in responding to the plight of then 95 internally displaced Tiruray families at Sitio Kyamko (Hill 224). Years later, the tribe was able to recover as they established a new home alongside the military patrol base.
The experiences of the Tiruray are no different from the current situation of other indigenous peoples in the country. According to a recent report of the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights (read: bit.ly/3ihaBmS), issues of land theft, lack of adequate access to basic social services, and violence continue to be their challenges.
To mitigate these decades-long problems, the Philippines passed the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act in 1997 (read: bit.ly/33MJwnF) to protect ancestral domain rights and prevent discrimination. But the law’s ideals are yet to be fully realized until every one of us not only recognize their resilience, but take action to protect their culture and lives.
