Gimmick Puppet - Failed Cards, Archetypes, and Sometimes Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh

- Yugioh Zexal easily has the worst ratio of actually impactful anime archetypes. While Number 39: Utopia was cool as hell in the anime, it did little as an actual strategy. Together with it, there’s a long list of failed decks which served only to piss you off when you pulled their cards in your hard-earned booster packs. Decks like Bounzer, Umbral Horror, Butterspy and Malicevorous have long been the laughingstock of yugioh players for their lack of, well, anything. Most of these decks are just lame, boring and uninspired packfiller. One of these decks is Gimmick Puppet. A deck you’re probably familiar with, but not for reasons the deck would like to be known. This DARK Machine strategy was utilized by Quattro in the anime, where he participated in some of Zexal’s most iconic moments. But these top ten epic anime moments don’t really translate to the real card game. Why’s that? Let’s take a look today as we dive into this Failed Archetype.

Konami's rule of thumb:
- Make strong card/deck
- Ban them for being too strong
If they printed the little man on Giant Grinder as a card, they should also print all unreleased Ojamas on Ojama Country, or at least Ojama Lime. Come on Konami, make Rata happy.
There is no happiness with Ojamas.
Oh, they know. And they're already doing it, I think we got the pink Ojama recently.
PINK OBAMA
It’s sad to inform you that all the other ojamas seen in Ojama country are all canonically dead as you can see in the artwork of solidarity
According to the art for solidarity, the other ojamas are dead.
Have you considered doing a Failed Mechanics video on old rules that eventually had to be scrapped, such as No Deck Limit, drawing on the first turn, priority of effects on summon, and Master Rule 4's weird limit on non-Link Extra Deck monsters needing to be linked to summon more?
I know not all of these are failures but some needing full rule changes feels like a couple might be worth talking about.
Personally I would like a video that talks about potential ways to improve the game against current and future power creep. Some ideas I had would include:
⚪️Giving both players an extra normal Summon/Set, but ONLY for Normal, Gemini and Flip monsters, and that said monsters summoned by this second free summon can’t be tributed or used as material the turn they hit the field.
⚪️Increasing the starting LP to anywhere between 10-20K, and/or a once per Duel lifeline to halve any single instance of battle and/or effect damage.
⚪️Players will often keep their decks as small as possible to boost consistency (unless they have cards that specifically NEED a big deck), so some built in incentives to running a bigger deck would be nice, like, say, if you’re running a max sized deck, you can, before the first turn starts, shuffle your starting hand into your deck and draw an equal number of cards.
@@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire That's a neat video idea, but if you're curious and havne't seen them yet check out Logs' videos on banned cards, since he goes into how those cards COULD work. It's not exactly what you're asking for, but it does go into ways to make cards that are overall very good and add their own things without going too far.
@@ShyRanger
I mean it’s one thing to make and remake cards that are better for the CURRENT rules, but I think another good approach for the game’s health would be to amend some of the rules themselves to help support cards that have fallen off and help address the growing power level of the game WITHOUT needing to nerf any existing cards (directly). Maybe having such changes as opt-in “Boons” would help in a more interesting way.
Master rule was made to kill Pendulums. So it was succesful.
The short answer of why it failed was because rather than restrict Pendulums specifically they gutted EVERY extra deck combo that didn't have enough spare resources to make Links first meaning a ton of strategies that weren't problems like the Chronomaly OTK could no longer be played at all. You also had stuff like Dandylion and Level Eater get banned early on in 2018 simply because they enabled too much since we still had Foolish Burial so you could mill Dandy and get 2 tokens for free or loop Level Eater since we had Blackwing Sohaya so you had stuff making multiple Quasars left and right. This was around the time I dropped the game completely so I don't remember a lot of the details, we also had Soul Charge around that time so yeah.

While it's very probably not gonna be used that way, I can't quite shake the feeling the Field Spell's Non-XYZ Monster Protection was mainly intended to make Leo's alternate Win Condition more usable.
I dunno, it just really reminds me of that "Protection from Non-Number Monsters" that all Numbers in the Anime have.
I have a feeling this deck is gonna be cracked when the new support for it to drop.
Actually faced some gimmick puppets in a pre-release tournament here in our area (ocg is our format) and yes you're screwed if you don't have hand traps and if your opponent knows what they're doing but it's nothing that crazy if you know its choke points. Outside of a ftk, it's end board is not that good in today's standards.
@@speechless1887 if i remember correctly their field spell gives protection just like the tenpai dragon one, so it's gonna be hard to deal with those monsters if you don't have the right cards, but yeah the deck have so little interactions with the opponent that u either ftk or lose

As a zexal fan I will act like the first few sentences were never spoken
It's true, though; during the Zexal era, Konami barely gave anime archetypes any game original support and hardly ever buffed them when they released them. It did not help the anime loved to give characters 3-4 main deck monsters and call it a day. That's why a lot of characters like Vector, Rio, Number 96, V, and Droite are left with very undeveloped decks.
While I take offense to those statements I can't deny that they have a point, most ZEXAL archetypes were some variant of "badly fill up the field with monsters of the same level to make exactly one Xyz Monster" in the anime and then ported directly to the card game without any additional support
How many Numbers were printed?
How many did you actually consider using?
Gimmick puppet of Leo's effect also require no spell and traps to activate it's effect. And you'll have to do it for 3 turns to pull off the win. It's so bad that I only use it as a big beater.
the support coming in crazy
Cute profile
Hutao rocks xD
This new wave of Gimmik Puppet Support is basically Konami saying to TheDuelLogs: “You want Fan Service? We’ll give you some Fan Service!”
The Gimmick Puppet main deck monsters are the poster children for being an archetype full of cards that only exist to put Extra Deck material on the field and then be intentionally made convoluted and restrictive at that singular thing they do. Honestly, it's rare for an archetype to be so literal in saying it does nothing else; even Evols at least have a few okay beatsticks and removal pieces if they're locked out of the Extra Deck, meanwhile Gimmick Puppet couldn't out an Axe Raider.
I really love the Gimmick Puppets if only for how cool their horror puppet theming is. Glad they're about to receive some hilariously busted support and I always love seeing new Field Spells being added to archetypes that lack them.
Gimmick Puppet Nightmare being used for lock control play is so funny.
6:54 Burn
11:55 Lol
13:35 It seems to be a trend nowadays that new anime support has the boss monster resemble the archetype's user. Masurawo for Superheavy Samurai, Flowering Etoile for Melodious, and now Fantasix Makina for Gimmick Puppet.
Can't wait for an Odd-Eyes boss monster that resembles Yuya in a blatant manner.
15:22 cameos. Nice. Though Antidote Nurse feels really out of place there.
And a reminder, just like ABC-Dragon Buster with Unions, the new support does not prove Gimmick Puppets were always good. It just proves that people are willing to play anything if you push it.
Anyways, hope to see Evols next. Another Ice Barrier.
The ultimate fan service as our lovely user of the puppets would say
That's honestly what most of these are
Though the newest batch of Gimmick Puppet cards will remind people that if you give a deck the means to do something. They'll make you regret it.
Considering that only like...one of their cards even sees use. I'd like to see you cover the Dinowrestlers. One of the many in the long line is failed dinosaur archetypes.
Could go into dinos as a everything but the type itself is a failed archetype
I'm super excited for the new support. I've loved the art for the Gimmick Puppets for as long as I've been aware of them and now them having a possibility to be a decent rogue option is awesome.
I loved the overall creepy aesthetic of the cards. Kinda like a throwback to Bakura’s Occult deck, and as someone who adores creepy looking dolls, it’s a perfect fit as a design for me. That new wave of support will hopefully really boost the archetype some more.
The scene Servist Puppet references in the anime was pretty gruesome to watch for me.
As a GX fan I would like to see you cover all the HERO sub-archetypes plus the related archetypes like the Neo-Spacians.
I always hated how gimmick puppet was named so but had no actual fun gimmick. At most, the gimmick was “we make rank 8s” and basically nothing else. Glad that’s changing soon :)
That's 90% of Zexal's archetype. Badly, XYZ spam was their gimmick.
Ngl I kinda liked the xyz spam and lv8, though their boss monsters sucked
To be fair, in the world where all mighty monsters that can't be destroyed normally are also the most powerful protection against interdimensional energy beings that was to destroy all worlds, XYZ spamming was really the only answer to fight against it. if only they were like Galaxy-Eyes in terms of main deck they'd be more useful. Somehow Onomats are better because of their effects
When they created the Field Spell, did Konami forgot about G.P. Twilight Joker’s effect?
Learning about the new support, I think I can hear Sephiroth's theme in the distance.
i am actually excited for the Gimmick Puppet support. not because it looks stupid, bc of hand trap immunity, but because i just loved the art style so much and was so sad when the cards just didn't really do anything..
Never did I think an anime-based, pack-filler archetype from 10+ years ago like fucking Gimmick Puppets would get the kind of support that would suddenly overhaul it into potential Tier 1 status. If this new support is as busted as we believe it to be, we might actually see Gimmick Puppet builds at YCS in the near future. Think about that.
A woozy? Ok haha I'm with it. Never heard that one before though bwahahaha. I love you Hiru. Keep up the good vibes 😂
Just saw there is actually a new Hiru video so I'm headed there next again haha
Ghost ogre on the field spell summoning back, imperm, the new trap that is basically ash blossom, dd crow shifter ghost belle spooky dogwood and yes nibiru stops the ftk. Using nibiru to tribute the xyz they give you to make giant grinder miss its effect stops the ftk from reaching 8000

You can banish 1 “Gimmick Puppet” monster from your hand, field or extra deck, then target 1 monster on the field (Quick Effect): That monster’s Level/Rank becomes that banished monster’s Level/Rank._

@@Deathmare235
As for “Wall”, I was thinking ANY card with “Wall” in its name? Labyrinth Wall? Imperial Iron Wall? Numeron Wall? Humpy’s planted his Dumpy at the top of it already.
@@Deathmare235
As for Gear Tuner, I think that one could be pretty useful… Multi-Attribute, makes all your machines targets for Machine Duplication AND Rekindling (if FIRE), and can (Quick Effect) manipulate the levels/Ranks of monsters in the field, including it’s tuner self. Plenty to play with for anyone with the right deck and some imagination.
I've loved my Puppet deck since release, and it just gets better with every round of support.
This is what happens when you emphasize more on quantity rather than quality
IMO one of the most interesting and technical archetype deck in the game.
2:05 Idea to retain this card to be more optimal:
_Gimmick Puppet Twilight Jester_ (DARK)
Level 8
Machine/Effect
_If a “Gimmick Puppet” monster you control is Destroyed or Banished: You can shuffle that monster into your deck; Special Summon this card from your hand, GY or Banishment. You can only use the effect of "Gimmick Puppet Twilight Joker" once per turn. DARK Machine Monsters that are summoned using this card as tribute or material for their summon are treated as “Gimmick Puppet” cards while on the field._
ATK/500 DEF/1900
So the second effect is useless, are there any non gimmick puppet dark machine monsters that are level 8?
@@Deathmare235
In the TCG at least, there are apparently 26 such monsters, yes. Some Ally of Justice cards, some Cyber and Chimeratech cards, Genex, orcust, D.D, some Jinzo and Cosmo, the “Metalmorph” Zoa and Red-Eyes, a couple of World Legacy, and a various other cards that are and aren’t part of other archetypes. Even if you weed out the ones that “can’t” use this card as Tribute or Marerial, there should still be enough variety for a slew of unexpected and interesting dirty tricks with the right setup.
All-time favorite deck! Gladiator Beasts following behind it. I can't tell you how many duels I've won on Master Duel with NO.88/NOC.88s instant win effect.
Edit: I run character appropriate decks. So you won't see cards like Ash/MaxxC in my deck as an example.
Gimmick Puppets interrupted by AFK Journey is what i call... a fine moment.
To be fair, if you can win by using gimmick puppet Leo then you deserved the win.

Idea for a crossover “Gimmick Puppet”/“Shadoll” card (since both have a Toy/Puppetry theme to them:
_Gimmick Puppet - Shadoll Joker_ (DARK)
Level 1
Machine/Flip/Effect
_FLIP: Special Summon 1 Level/Rank 8 or lower “Gimmick Puppet” or “Shadoll” monster from your hand or GY._
_If a “Gimmick Puppet” or “Shadoll” monster you control is destroyed by battle or removed from the field by an opponent’s card or effect (Quick Effect): You can banish 1 “Gimmick Puppet” or “Shadoll” monster from your hand, field or GY; Normal Set or Special Summon facedown 1 “Gimmick Puppet” or “Shadoll” monster from your hand or GY, who’s total ATK/DEF is less than or equal to that banished monster’s._
ATK/500 DEF/1900
Would be cool, but having a Flip effect alongside an effect that requires it to be face-up on the field seems anti-synergystic

Well a lot of the already existing “Shadoll” monsters are kinda like that, although I suppose I could make it so the card can flip itself back up/down to get the effect through and/or reset the flip effect. I’m on the clock now so I’ll look into that modification later.
Can you do Digital Bugs? It's basically the first "archetype" (it technically isn't) to use a Rank Up mechanic but then overshadowed coz of how costly it is for them (discard 2), the material effects do not carry on rank up and their gimmick against Defense Position opponents is shut down by Links.

Idea for a “Gimmick Puppet” that’s also FIRE while on the field or in the GY, and makes Gimmick Puppets as a whole comparable with both “Machine Duplication” and “Rekindling” at the same time, and the monster itself would be based off of old-timely dolls made from straw that rural
Folk would make for themselves or their kids:

_⚪️”Gimmick Puppet” monsters you own are also FIRE-Attribute._
_⚪️The ATK of all “Gimmick Puppet” monsters in your deck becomes 500._
_⚪️The DEF of all “Gimmick Puppet” monsters in your GY becomes 200._
ATK/200 DEF/200
Why the hell is it a flip
@@Deathmare235
Because the Flip effect is another “Gimmick” to go along with the “Gimmick Puppet” thing. The Flip effect, if pulled off, would return your banished DARK and FIRE machine monsters into your deck, thus setting up more rounds of Machine Duplication and Rekindling. So assuming you have 1 Wicker Face-up and one facedown, you would have Machine Duplication proc, then use Rekindling to summon them again as they end up in the GY, and then flip summon the other Wicker to get those banished machines back into your deck to loop back into another Duplication and Rekindling.
I’m taking the name “Gimmick Puppet” and am using it as a chance to make “Gimmick” focused monsters with a Rube Goldberg Machine sorta self-synergy.

@@Deathmare235 Cyber Dragon as a deck? Not really. And even if they were, chances are they're extremely low compared to the current meta decks.
I mentioned "cards", because I'm not talking about decks themselves. Cyber Dragon/Chimeratech specifically has "forever rogue" status as a tech option because of how they can easily disrupt certain link decks and any Machine decks with removal that can't be reacted to, often better than simply using a Kaiju.
Mansion is about to make the game playable once again
The best thing about Gimmick Puppets is the art. Their design is haunting and disturbing. Love that. I wish they were good.
Gimmick puppets are really cool to me. Most modern yugioh cards artwork is just robot stuff, anime women, dragon,or big guy. Gimmick puppets have an actually creepy unique theme besides a few cards. I hope we see some more support for some underrated archetypes especially toons.
Not sure why people are saying this video is bad and arguing that this archetype isn't a failed one. Gimmick puppets were nowhere to be seen and it took them printing like 2-3 busted cards, a bunch of good support, and a nearly handtrap immune FTK just for them to have a chance. Like, yeah, any archetype in this entire series could go from being completely failed to viable with that kind of support. He even mentions the support in this video. TF are people complaining about.
for real its like no one is paying attention or doing their research this is about the tcg only so no ocg, duel links or master duel and they did nothing in those formats either okay maybe links but for what a month?
Which is different from any other "good" deck how? The very premise of this series (not meta = failed) is dumb.
@@TheDarknshadows Gimmick Puppets were barely even rogue in Duel Links because the skills they gave them had really awful restrictions. @@kindlingking He's done videos like this before.. Archtypes that has have a long time of being bad, before receiving broken support in recent-ish times. I think it's fine, dont see the reason to get upset over it.
And Gimmick Puppets were not just "non-meta". They were nigh unplayable. If you feel like these videos can only be on archtypes worse than this one, we may as well scrap 90 percent of the series.
Yeah, it took them more than 10 years to become usable. I love Gimmick Puppet, but Konami did an awful job with them at the beginning.
I think the new support is going to cause a sharp spike in play until the counters for it become common like every other FTK strategy
i can see argent chaos force going on the banlist right after this new support gets released.
Man Konami recognized their own power creep and said "here's some legacy support to help contend your favorite old archetype." It won't be meta but damn that new support looks sick, love the creepy archetypes.
I liked the idea and design of th but i gave up on them pretty quick
I love how they're called "Gimmick" Puppets and they have 2 archetypal cards dedicated to Insta Wins and a new wave of support designed to FTK, not OTK, FIRST turn. A delightful gimmick.
The new Support was a reason for me to think that Konami would ban Albion so they wouldn't need to bann Nightmare but as Branded player myself I'm happy with it.
With the new support i wonder if this deck will remain a failed strategy? It remains to be seen.
