- This is the first installment in this video series, where I'll be documenting how to swap a 2JZ into a 350z from start to finish, covering all the steps, parts, costs, and headaches involved in the project. In this video, I go over the history of my 350z, explain why I'm 2JZ swapping it, and show the process of refreshing my new 2JZ. Also included is humor courtesy of my fine personality. The amount of overspray you blasted your z with is insane lol. kudos to you for doing this swap.
It doesn’t have any texture from overspray really so I think it was far enough away or too cold to stick, however my clearcoat started peeling on the door a couple months after this

Thanks! Trumpet noise was negated by the true-dual pipe setup of the HKS.

If I did have any it was extremely minimal because I haven’t felt any texture, in fact I probably should have just primed the car since my clear coat is peeling now 😆

Right at four months since I placed the order. They were back ordered for weeks, plus had to compensate for production time. Four months was a long wait, but maaaaan was it worth it.

If I were you, I’d find a 2JZGE VVTI, get 2JZ NON-VVTI Pistons and Rods, and get a turbo kit. I went with a GTE VVTI cylinder head (which was optional and something I desired), but if you’re trying to save money, just stick with the GE VVTI cylinder head and do a turbo kit. Ultimately it’s going to cost more than rebuilding the vq, but you will get more power per dollar, and have a platform that you can continue to upgrade down the line. eBay and marketplace will be your best friends on finding good deals. Import shops will run a higher price but tend to have higher quality parts. If you have more questions, hmu and I’ll try to help out!

Thank you! The car is registered and kept in Kansas, EPA restrictions are next to none here. The transmission will be the original CD009 that comes with the 350z, using the standard bell housing. I’ll be running a Collins Adapter to mate the 2JZ to the trans. (The motor will push the trans back so you’ll need a shorter driveshaft, and a shifter relocation kit will also be needed) Collins sells different stages of clutches with those kits, so I’ll be selecting the clutch that’s closest to my power/torque goals, likely stage 3. I plan to make the harness myself- there’s going to be sensors I need to add in for the VVTi and sensors I need to delete as well, but I do know that they make pre-built harnesses for this swap, so give it a quick search on Google.
hey did u get the extreme low bc coilovers or the normal? because ur fitment in the rear looked lower than mine and i’m maxed out
To be honest I’m not sure what they are. I bought the second hand from an ad listed as “BC racing DS series coilovers 350z”
Does the HKS exhaust have any branding on it? my 350z nismo had it already by the previous owner trying to find out if it’s real or not
I don’t recall any stamps or logos. It did come in a big “HKS” box though. I can double check next time I have it off the ground.
How much over spray landed on your car while painting the bock?
None! The perspective makes it look very close but I was about 10ft away- plus I wasn’t worried about it too much. The car needs repainted badly anyways :)

@Jacob Rosproy we in the same situation I buy my exhaust megan racing and when I ready to installed I decided to do the 2j swap so now I going to try to make this work with the 2jz
the overspray on Z must have been crazy
It was actually very minimal if there was any at all, but the cars getting repainted so it won’t matter in the end 🙂

I googled a lot of it. Plus I’ve been working with cars since I was young. There’s tons of videos, forums, pictures, and people out there that will teach you everything you need to know!

An Rb26 would have been nice, in fact I almost bought an Rb25, but it was hard to beat the price I paid for the 2J. Maybe next time, though 😉
