- Renting an apartment in Tokyo is expensive, even for a small place.
However, Tokyo isn't the only place in Japan that you should consider living and working in. A typical 2 bedroom apartment in Fukuoka (where we live) will cost you MUCH less.
Here's a tour of our 79m2 3LDK apartment in Fukuoka.
Did you know that Japanese room sizes are measured in "tatami mats"? Did you know that you might have to buy and install your own air conditioning? We didn't!
How much does it cost to rent in Japan? This video will answer that question for you.

Your apartment is so nice! I lived in Tokyo for a year, and an apartment this size in Tokyo (esp if it's by a station) would cost a crazy amount! Anyway I'm so glad I found your channel. My husband and I are hoping to relocate to Japan. Our plan was to go to Tokyo but I've been hearing more and more that Fukuoka is the place to be. Especially if you to stay in Japan permanently. It's nice to finally find a channel that showcases family life in japan. The idea of choosing Fukuoka is definitely growing on me.
I'm glad you've found our channel too.
I'd always recommend Fukuoka, especially to people with families. It's the perfect blend of city and country life
This is a very big apartment. Very nice. Thanks for the tour.
Thank you Mary
@jesse jams yes please
That is honestly huge for the price.
It's a UR apartment in Fukuoka, so it's pretty cheap for its size like you say
@@JesseJamesJapan Ohh ok. I hope if I ever get a chance to live there, I can keep this fact in mind. Thanks!
That is a very nice apartment!! Wow, 3LDK with a huge balcony for 89,000 yen. So good. But yeah, if you move out ... closer to the mountains you will be able to have a garden.
This is awesome!
thanks you , lovely content and apartment
So nice of you say so, Jesse does a good job of making it look homely
Yes I would like to see more apartments I lived in Fukuoka in the 60"s for 4 years I really loved it.. would like to see places with air conditioning already present not some you must buy ..apartments near grocery stores thank You
Which part of Fukuoka did you live in? I imagine it's changed quite a bit since the 60s
Really nice apartment ♡
Thank you!
Just found your channel and really enjoying your content so far. Would love to see more apartment videos but also how you've all transitioned from life in Britain to japan as a family because often life in Japan videos are mostly from the single person perspective.
Thank you for your comment.
More apartment videos are on the to-do list.
And thanks for the idea- we will certainly make a video(s) about our family's transition to life in Japan.
That is a very nice looking apartment. I’m looking forward to more content. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Lucas
I love it. Its nice
Thanks!
Beautiful
Thank you. My wife does a good job of making our apartment look good!
It looks like you have a lot of space and it's cheap
It's a lot of space, and just a 5 minute walk from both the subway, and the train station
Hello, great tour of your apartment very informative. Please can you advise which sites one can use to search apartments in Fukuoka? Thank you
Oh yes, interested in seeing tours of your friends apartments too and also what bills looks like.
Thank you.
If you're looking for an English speaking agent, then Michi at
f-apartments.com/
is great. She's really friendly and helpful.
If you don't mind searching in Japanese (or using Google Translate), then I use
www.f-takken.com/freins/rent/houses
or
www.athome.co.jp/chintai/fukuoka/city/
Both are quite easy to navigate, and have plenty of options.
Let us know if there's anything else we can help with
I've asked my friends to tidy their apartments so I can take a video... So hopefully that'll happen soon!
I will make a video about bills soon, thanks for the request.
If you're interested in moving to Japan, perhaps you'd like to know how much it costs? Here's a video we've made about it: th-cam.com/video/HW4Mkkyf2Aw/w-d-xo.html
I'd love to see more videos on apartments!
I'll get on it!
I imagine you'd also like to know more about budgeting in Japan? Well, you're in luck dear Jonathan! th-cam.com/video/HW4Mkkyf2Aw/w-d-xo.html
Beautiful home
Thank you. Jesse has done a good job of making it nice and homely.
Yes can you show other Apts? Is it possible to rent a house? Thank you
Definitely possible to rent a house. If you move outside the city centre, house rentals prices are not too bad either
Maybe it's the British, but it sounds a bit condescending the way you describe what would be considered a pretty nice apartment in Tokyo (especially for a foreigner). "It's basic", "only this, only that", "had to do this, didn't come with that, had to pay".
Yeah, it's not standard - it'd be like renting a place in the US and being frustrated that it wasn't furnished; that's just not the standard.
Coming from England, it was a shock having to buy everything for a rental apartment. I was expecting the apartment to come with at least a stove and air con.
But you're right, Japanese apartments generally come completely bare, so potential renters have to be aware of that.
You have a very nice apartment! Is it usually sunny and hot in Fukuoka or just hot and cloudy?
Usually sunny and (too) hot. The winters get very cold though, and we sometimes get snow.
Around now (the start of May), and the middle of Autumn (October) are the best seasons
@@JesseJamesJapanOk, Thankyou :)
Which area in Fukuoka is this? This is great to live with a friend, half the rent for such a decent apartment
This is in East (Higashi-ku), in Fukuoka city. Basically anywhere outside of the center (Chuo-ku) is around the same price as this.
If that’s very basic, I’d hate to see luxury Apts…
I'll find a rich friend and see if they'll let me film in their apartment
@@JesseJamesJapan can’t wait!
How long does it take to get an apartment in your building or in Japan and the food there would you say it is organic? Was diagnosed with a stomach disorder and can't eat American processed foods and the fruits and the vegetables are all GMO, and pesticide and my stomach can't take it.
You can apply and move into an apartment all within the space of about 2 weeks. You need to have a visa, Japanese phone number and bank account first.
As for the food: Japan still uses a lot of pesticides on their fresh foods, but there are organic options available if you search them out
@@JesseJamesJapan Appreciate you. Love your videos. Thank you.
A tour of a house would be good? And I’m still waiting for that supermarket visit…
A house... I shall find a friend with a house! In the city, most people live in apartments, but I'm sure I can find one.
As for the supermarket, I'm waiting for my PIC (Partner-In-Crime) Isaac to come back to Japan and help me make the video
Hi,
Is it the price for jobs as a teacher or something do you know ? It's because I hope to find a spacious place like that if I found a job in Japan (I applied to 3 International schools to teach next year, hope for some good luck ! 2 in Fukuoka and 1 in Nagoya. I got a cat so I need some space hihi...)
Thanks !
And ya, you be nice to see other apartments as well with price and location hihi...
This is actually quite an expensive apartment in Fukuoka (due to the building being next to a subway station).
But it's not a special price for teachers, just the standard price.
Actually, if you get a job at an international school, they usually give you a housing subsidy so you'll be able to find a nice apartment for a really good price.
Good luck with your applications!
@@JesseJamesJapan thanks, and just like you I don't care being so close to the center, but being close to places with green like trees and mountain and stuff hihi... And yes, I hope I got really good luck hihi... Thanks for you quick reply by the way !
No matter where you live in Fukuoka, you're never far from the mountains or the sea.
When you hear back about the job, let us know!
@@JesseJamesJapan wow, that's good to know ! And thanks, I'll keep you update if I hear back from them.
If you're interested in moving to Japan, then you'd probably like to know about monthly budgets etc? Here's our latest video about it: th-cam.com/video/HW4Mkkyf2Aw/w-d-xo.html
Can u tell how much it is in Japanese money
It's ¥89,000
@@JesseJamesJapan is it expensive in Japan ??
🥺🥺
"expensive" can mean different things to different people, but here's a video I made about our monthly budget that should give you an idea of the prices in Japan:
th-cam.com/video/HW4Mkkyf2Aw/w-d-xo.html
@@JesseJamesJapan ok
That's such nice "government housing" lol
I agree! And it's open to all who wish to live in it, foreigners are just as welcome as natives.
