This game is phenomenal. I'm near the end of it now. One of my favorites of the genre and I've played a lot. Afterimage is also one of my favorite games. The music on that game is so good. I'd recommend it also. Good video as usual
Thanks for the recommendation, never heard of Afterimage Edit: ah yes i do have that game on my wishlist on the Nintendo eshop. Still waiting for a deep sale around 5$ or so then i may pick it up
The Prince of Persia trilogy starting with "Sands of Time" are some of THE best games of all time. Its also what started Assassins Creed 1. That was initially supposed to be another Prince of Persia game but Ubisoft changed their minds halfway into development and decided to turn it into something new which became Assassins Creed.
Excellent review, as usual!! What a time to be an MV enthusiast! It's a top-tier game for me; it goes directly into the Olympus of MVs. The game executes almost every single aspect of a great MV to an excellent level or near it. What a comeback for the saga! it's here to stay, and I am sure it will motivate other AAA studios into the MV scene! We are fortunate, what a breath of fresh air! PS the Rap song at the end of the credits is fire though
Fun fact, the NPC at 17:33 was actually a text-to-speech voice that was meant to get replaced by actual voicelines, they just forgot to switch. I played the game a few days ago and it was fixed
For the record, Capcom did make 1 good metroidvania: 2014's Strider. Fun little game if you need a few hours to kill and want something with simple mechanics and fast action.
For 2d Prince of Persia games, PoP 2 the shadow and the flame was my favorite game as a kid. It’s super creepy and violent (for the time) with lots of horror elements. The prince of Persia self titled reboot for 360 was awesome too
Man, this game is simply fantastic. Whoever says this game sucks because it's not 3d or because you don't play as the prince, is talking out of their ass. Some platforming gets ridiculous, but everything is doable... you'll get it 5 or 10 minutes after your first attempt. As for the 2.5D... come on, it's lovely. I like pixel art as much as the next guy. Everyone's doing that now and, I think, it's a bit overdone by now. Besides, having grown up with the NES, I'm a bit tired of it. Also, the pixelart can be confusing... all those pixels that blend in can make you think your jumping onto a platform when it's just part of the background. The music was good, the story was meh. This is as fun as it gets. Ubisoft sucks, yes, but they nailed it with this one!
Ok, two things. 1) yeah, Prince of Persia rules, and is an awesome metroidvania. 2) calling Dread a dud absolutely hurt my soul, as that game also rules.
Calling Dread a dud was a bit harsh, apologizes to you and your soul. It’s tough to do, but I try to articulate that Dread is an AMAZING game, but not a great Metroidvania.
@@MetroidvaniaGuru so in your opinion, what aspects of it make it a middling metroidvania? I loved it to death when I played it. Haven’t played it since I beat it twice right at launch though, so maybe I’m looking at it through nostalgia-tinted glasses though.
@@marshallrankin168 It really comes down to the game's exploration. It's pretty boring, mostly because it's not very rewarding. Getting another energy tank or your 5000th missle upgrade just doesn't excite. Its combat and presentation are top tier, though.
Just finished it yesterday and it's honestly one of my favorite Metroidvanias of the past couple of years. From visuals to music, combat and platforming, exploration and abilities to bosses ... everything was top tier quality. The story was kind of lackluster but that's almost never the focus in the genre anyway so it's not a big deal for me. Every once in a while Ubisoft actually creates a great game, i hope it sold well enough for them to warrant a sequel. I'd definitely be down for that, especially if it's in the same artstyle.
I had the same thought with the guiding light Wak Wak tree, the girl's voice, that it was the one voice out of place. This game is so great, hopefully it means some great MV titles to come when other devs take notice
Loved the video. I thought you would touch more on the difficulty. Even though options are fantastic for accessibility, i kinda feel like they make the experience a little bit less polished and uneven for hardcore players. Still, a banger uncontroversial game.
The last thing I was expecting was a contemporary Ubisoft game blowing me away, less still a metroidvania, these devs did make some great Rayman games though. Just finished it 100% and loved every minute. Gameplay wise it is just top tier, movement is in the upper echelons, and the world was intriguing if not as evocative as the likes of Blasphemous or HK. The story could have been a lot more interesting but it seems they had to cut some corners there. I know the NPC you mean, and yeah, it felt like they were setting up some kind of pay-off there from an early scene (and a hidden letter) and then they just...vanish from the story, apart from one character claiming they are hunting you at one point and then *SPOILER* Sargon inexplicably proclaiming her dead at the end! :D
I’m of two minds about the [ability you chose not to mention for spoiler reasons]. On the one hand, it’s such a unique and brilliant upgrade that, at its best, is a combination of Villager’s Pocket ability from Smash and the fully upgraded Gravity Gun from Half-Life 2. On the other hand, Lost Crown rarely made the best use of it. It’s a perfect puzzle-platformer MV ability trapped inside a combat-oriented MV, and 95% of its uses were less Pocket Gravity Gun and more like Samus’ missiles if she had to hunt for ammo every time she ran into a red door.
I really liked Shinsekai. The setting, atmosphere, exploration, weapon upgrades, bossfights(especially the later ones) were great imo. Kalux was the only voice I really liked, and now I hear they changed it. . .
@@MetroidvaniaGuru The game is very heavy on exploration in isolation without any npc's. I love it, but if I remember correctly, not a favorite setting for you.
The Lost Crown has the best movement, combat, and bosses of any metroidvania I've played. Hopefully, the game gets some DLCs That one character is voiced by AI.
I put 70 hours into this game since launch (2 weeks). I got to the end once but didn't beat it. On another file I 100% it and on the last file I beat it on immortal, which was way more fun than I imagined!
I'm persian, and i was so happy to play a game about my country and with farsi dub, guys this game is pretty accurate to persian culture, and as a metroidvania fan, it was one the best games in this genre
Man I normally agree with you like 95%. This game was buggy AF and being restricted to the analog stick without being able to use the dpad sucked. Everything else about this game is amazing and I love that it’s not terrible on the switch but getting stuck in walls and having bosses stuck in a loop walking into walls really killed my enjoyment completely.
I agree with you about abilities and overall feel of Sargon and that’s the only thing that really had me wanting to continue. The biomes were cool looking and side quests were decent but way too forgettable.
That’s interesting. I legit didn’t come across any bugs my entire playthrough, and I played on Switch 😆 Sorry it was buggy for you. And being restricted to the analogue stick does suck. I’ve just gotten so used to it. The side quests were okay. There’s just want a lot of them. The general wanting you to mercy kill his men, the parrot one, the dude looking for his friend, the architect with the puzzles, the hermit with the bells, the prophecy sands, and that might be it. A few are game spamming, but for a 20-hour game, that’s pretty slim.
For the record, a Prince of Persia where this one time you dont play as the prince...is that harder to swallow than the entire Legend of Zelda series where you dont play as Zelda?

Played it for the first time this evening, very excited after all the great things I'd heard about it. First impressions after a couple of hours of play unfortunately are extremely disappointing. Graphics are technically impressive but the art style is bland and ugly. Characters are one dimensional and stink of safe modern triple A stereotypes. Ditto the dialogue. Story so far is an absolute nothing burger. Combat I found to be repetitive and frustrating. And at one point the game froze up on the map screen so I had to reset. Overall just a really mediocre experience given my expectations going in. Hope it'll grow on me if I keep going a bit longer. At least I got it on a big sale.
