@metal_complex. First I love the vids. Second I really want this but have seen some reviews saying the blade gets loose and flys away when opening or falls out. Have you experienced this?
I have one and aside from the blade change screw, I love it. I don’t *need* $40 utility blade holder. At the same time, no one *needs* a knife over $50, but here we are.
Or even anything more than flaked obsidian, arguably.
I saw someone on Facebook report that he got a replacement (on Amazon) screw that is thumb twist.
@@DavidPerez-rq1sd do you by chance know what screw this was?!
What thumbscrew? I need one for this knife
M2.5x3mm thumb screw
What it needs is a small space milled into the scale, like the tooth pick holder on a Swiss army knife to take a t8 L wrench for blade changes and pivot maintenance
Perfect solution until you lose it, so they could include an extra
You could also attach an l shaped t8 to your razor blade replacements because you won’t need it until you actually get to the box of blades
I'm getting one for sure. As always, thanks for a great review, Metal Complex!
Long time watcher, first time commentor. I pre-ordered this device, because I generally carry decent knives, but don’t like to use them on junk… I liked the elementum handle and button lock. And yes love the clicks and the clacks, and I can beat this on junk and not feel bad about it. Love it.
I like this for traveling because if you’re flying and don’t want to check a bag, you can take the blade out. Leave it in the bag and easily get a replacement blade almost anywhere when you land.
I'll be the first to warn you - doesn't always work. I've had a few utility knives (without the blade) taken from TSA. I've also had times where those same items made it through. Really depends on the agent. I always bring a cheap one now for this very reason.
I worked for TSA. Don't do this. Don't bring any knife looking thing. No utility knives without the blades, no knifeless Multi-Tools that market themselves as TSA compliant, no nothing. I got paid $17 an hour and hated my job. I wasnt dealing with it, opening it up and inspecting it, it was just getting confiscated.
@@mattc5647fair enough. Honestly I always check a bag anyway and just put my stuff in checked bags. I’ve never had issues and it’s always been easy
@@mattc5647 thankyou for this, for confirming my suspicions abut the motivations of many TSA agents that seem to already hate you before they even talk to you lol. not joking, I appreciate this. I have figured this for a while but never heard any TSA-type person be so open about it. 👍
Some company needs to partner with Milwaukee and make a premium Fast Back
Utility knives are awesome. My “Exceed Designs TIrant razor” is my most used knife, as I definitely dont want to ruin my other knives by cutting boxes and tape with them
Tirant is great!
I agree. I have a tirant and a bugout I carry daily. Almost always reach for the razor
I had a tirant and idk what happened to it (I moved and *poof*) but now it's $85 base model. I got it for like $40 or $50 a year or so ago.
Tirant Razor V3 all the way. Oracle? Civivi? BigiDesign? Not as perfect and likable!
I got a Reate EXO-U, and I'm done. It's one of the greatest fidget toys I've ever purchased, and a box cutter too.
Picked this up in blue and absolutly love it. Lot of people compain about the screw to remove the blade but dont think thats so much of an issue. Always have my leatherman/bitkit
Love it, getting my dad one for father's day.
I have pretty much started a whole separate collection... there's pocket knives and then there's the lovely onslaught of folding utility blades that have been coming out.
Love this channel 💕
I've seen some other reviewers have a complaint that the screw holding the blade will back itself out with use.
I got one and love it. Has a bit of lock stick but that’s pretty much my experience with almost every button lock knife I’ve tried.
I’ve been using mine for a couple weeks now. It’s great
Usually most of the quick releases have a lot of slop, but on this the blade is basically rock solid and no play, well the one I own at least
I blind purchased one so thanks for validating my impulsive decisions!
Got mine yesterday(along with one for a coworker) and I'm enjoying it overall.
I'll see how it integrates into my edc
I absolutely love this one and am glad that it is a fixed blade and not a quick release. Have so many quick release ones and have been wanting something more solid where the blade doesn't always come out from sideways pressure.
On top of that, it is awesome to have one that is more like a standard knife with a smooth botton lock and more deployment options.
Favourite so far!
Agreed. This is not a utility knife to me, it's my EDC pocket knife that I never have to worry about using or sharpening.
@@chrislange3462 Exactly! But I still carry a normal folding knife along with this daily.
Honestly prefer the screw, the Gerber one i use keeps it far more secure than any quick release system I've ever used.
I have a green one. The action on it is fantastic.
I love the multiple deployment options, the build quality is good, as expected from Civivi. . . The screw means I’ll probably never really carry it over my TiRant
I love mine. I got the Civivi key bit so I have a T8 on me all the time now.
Thanks MC😎
I'm liking this model too & it would go with my Auto Parts work shirts if I get the Kelly Green-ish version!
I EDC a Cobratec OTF utility knife.. I love this too
What is the best quality knife with MagnaCut between $250-$400? My first knife is a is a Demko in 3V and I’m getting the itch again😂 I love how easy it is to manipulate the lock.
This is sick. I wish they had come out with this when I still worked in receiving. Will probably still buy one lol.
Am I dreaming? Is this the ONLY Elementum with a left hand carry option? I didn't think Civivi knew how to make an elementum with multiple clip options!!!! Wow!! S O L D ! ! !
I prefer having a screw holding the blade in, some of the quick release setups don't hold the blade as tight and a couple can inadvertently release the blade if you are applying pressure to the blade housing.
The screw issue could be easy solved by using a flat head type screw that could be turned using the back of a spare blade.
I love it. I’m not in the market for a fancy utility knife. But if I was this would be it. Well made. I like the deployment and lock method better than a traditional utility knife. And it’s not ridiculously priced like all of the other overbuilt utility knives I’ve seen.
The best thing about it is how fidgety it is on top of its small size as well as very functional jimping and finger choil
I like how Civivi does their button locks, so if the aluminum scales are similar to their other models (like the ones on the Qubit) then this looks great for the price. The mounting mechanism is cool because it probably prevents blade rattle/shifting and allows exposure of (almost) the entire cutting edge of the blade.
I'll pass on this one because I prefer toolless retention mechanisms and more cutting path free of the mounting frame. If I'm being really picky, I also prefer when the blade is entirely housed within the handle scales. Not just for aesthetic reasons, but because the carbon steel used in disposable utility blades is particularly prone to rusting if sweat makes it through your pocket. (Ask me how I know.)
I'm going to stick with my Big Idea Design Ti Utility, especially after I finally broke in the detent track so the action is super smooth. But I'll definitely recommend this Civivi to friends who want something more interesting than a Milwaukee Fastback, but don't want to shell out for a Tirant Razor V3 or a Reate EXO-U.
T8 to change the blade was criticized on the prototype and Civivi completely ignored it. If Civivi thought a screw was the way to go then they should have used a thumb screw!
It would really funny and amazing if someone like Lightning would make a utility OTF.
I like how you dont have to baby the edge on this one
My biggest question. Can you buy this and have a Elementum II KNIFE. And um…. Swap the blades?
Most every utility knife I've ever owned the quick release jams up and stops working over time anyway. I have no problem with a single screw holding it in place
I prefer the mini Pyrite for this knife type alongside my other EDC carries. Many pockets means many knives get carried!
I've watched a couple of reviews on this. Not one person has showed if the blade sits in there tightly without rocking back and forth. Enjoyed the rest of the video though.
I just got the exo u I think ima grab one of these now😂 kinda cool
I need to get this for my best friend this upcoming Christmas in a few months, need help trying to find yellow scales for it cause his favorite color is yellow. If anyone can help pls do
Just got the reate exo-u coming in the mail also the exo-m
The screw is important because it gives us an excuse to use one of the 6 screwdriver options we carry with our EDC. I also like that its more secure.
Just a thought: Compare it to a standard Elementum.
That would help but I think because he said the body of the knives are the same he did not compare them.
@@mjc7778That's the point though. It's more like an elementum you never have to worry about using or sharpening vs an actual utility knife. It's excels at the former, sucks at the latter.
I use my Exceed Designs TIrant razor for nearly every cutting utility except for food, which is what I use whatever other pocket knife I carry for. (CJRB Crag usually) The TIrant is so perfect in feel and utility that I guess I won't buy this Civivi, though it is still tempting. I do like the large usable edge. Of course, even though the TiRant has less cutting edge usable, it actually has more plungeable blade free of the holder than the Civivi and it has a toolless blade change. The TiRant also has a very satisfying deployment, but has a frame lock and not a button lock, which is the only point where Civivi beats Exceed's TiRant.
I like it a lot but it really needs a quick change blade system.
Cool it’s Reate exo u and Tirant v3.
You said there are 7 different variants? Your link to Blade HQ shows 4.
Can you compare this with Olight Otacle U1? Its also an utility knife but uses axis lock and lots of people said good things about it
Will concur. Action on that thing is incredible. Totally didn't expect it
I bought both at the same time, received same package. For me personally, early impressions, the civivi is easier in every way to use. Flipper is easier to open, although the thumb stud on the olight is not hard by any means. I can just do the civivi with no thought, the olight takes slightly more positioning and thought. Closing is a bigger difference. For me, the olight is too short. It should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer for the axis lock to be 'easy.' The button on the civivi is significantly easier.
Love my Reate EXO-U. Unfortunately the blade change in this could have been better designed. I've seen issues with the screw not holding the blade properly.
Im almost positive the reate booth at tx Blade show told me exou was going to start at 45 dollars. What did you get yours for?
@@walterbwd oh no they are going for like $88 lol. Well worth it in my opinion for the fidget factor. Got mine from DLT before they sold out. The green speed hole one. It's like a dark green matte. Really nice. I'm in a state I can carry and use it for work. Fun package opener.
The T8 screw is a deal breaker for me for that very reason. Civivi really needs to consider making a revision to their design to address this shortcoming - even at the expense of the full blade edge.
I really like how they designed this so we can utilize the entirety of the razor blade.
Almost*
The whole purpose of a utility knife is to flip the blade over 2 in 1 but no one is talking about this has anyone ever ripped up carpet 😮😊
Try the Oknife Otacle U1 if you really want to be impressed!
Looks cool, but no thanks! At 20$ maybe...
I also saw another review where the screw gets loose just by opening and closing and the blade flies out.
I sure civivi released this, knowing there will be a Mk2 with either a tool to change the blade or a quick release.
How did you miss the critical flaw that is the ejecting blade? I would be surprised if this wasn't a safety recall. You can't make a fidget friendly, quick deploying blade that flies across the room when the screw untightens itself.
Tighten that thing up then
Put a larger blade in that fits snug. Civivi blade has a gap down bottom edge. Fixed mine and is solid. No safety issue
for me it beats everything else hands down and ive bought / maker'd almost a dozen
That's the best version of the Elementum I've seen. 😂
What happened to the card slap??
I only do that on unboxing videos
Yo the side of the box says plain 6cr blade
No compartment for an extra blade
I see one major use case for this and it's also my main reason for disliking the screw. This is a great knife for people who fly a lot and like to have a knife, but if you're flying your also less likely to have a bit set.
Sorry, but you can't carry a utility knife even without a blade in it. The youtubers who say this did no research.
The reason is obvious and they have been infamously used in the past.
It's a fancy light duty package opening fidget toy and I'm ok with this 😮😅😊
The problem is I think people see utility blade and see or expect or can't fathom any use other than an abused utility knife. I see this as an edc pocket knife alternative for people that can't or don't want to sharpen a knife. I work in an office, I like modern razor sharp knives, but I can't sharpen a knife that sharp to save my life. I'll admit it. I'm going to use this for pocket knife things and change the blade every few months or once a year. The only thing I might like better is a flathead screw like a Gerber EAB actually.
cant get this in canada so i bought the olight for half the price
Would be cool if the mechanism to change the blade actually worked.
Does it not? I’m confused. (I’ve only seen MC’s video on this so far, so please forgive me for my ignorance.)
@@Digspig Many people had the experience of the screw backing itself out during flipping, causing the blade to fly out at very high speeds. Loctiting the screw fixes the issue but having to loctite everytime you replace the blade is just not something you should have to do at this price
@@kevidoplz7342 Eww, that sounds terrible! Thanks for the explanation!
I'm upset because my wife really wants this, but it won't ship to Canada!
Perfect for cutting wrapping paper
If only it came with a quick blade changer. Needing a separate tool to change the blade makes this knife a big pass. My Milwaukee utility knife has a button lock just like this , but with a quick blade change button , and sold for $10 at Ace Hardware.
Different purposes. I too would rather have a fastback for serious use, but it's cartoonish for EDC office work for example. Similarly, I would not take the civivi to a work site. It's not the intention.
If you work in a blue collar job, you already know why utility knives are so much more useful than regular knives. If I need to cut a new piece of conveyor belt to replace on a machine and my knife is too dull, I don't have time to sit there and sharpen it. Just slap a fresh blade on and get to work
This isn't to replace a utility knife. It's for light duty EDC where you don't want to worry about messing up or sharpening a nice pocket knife, or to use instead of a traditional pocket knife altogether.
Gideons tactical did a review of this…..honestly it did really bad in his testing. The blade came loose multiple times and basically wen’t flying. It’s not a quick exchange either. I think the EXO-U is probably going to be a much better option where legal
I mentioned the lack of a quick exchange feature but mine held up fine. No issues during use
@@metal_complexyessir. I sometimes get ahead of myself and comment during the video 😂. As always i appreciate the review and enjoy the content. YOU got me into knives and I’m very thankful for that……though my wife isin’t!
I've had my elemental utility for a couple weeks now, the t8 screw holding the blade on does come loose after a while. I guarantee you if you open and close the knife like a hundred times it'll come flying out eventually, probably my only negative
They actually changed the clip on this knife. Massivley reduced the bill. Pretty much a non-issue now imo
These are great if you happen to go to the airport and forget you have a knife on you. Just ditch the blade and buy a new one when you land.
so they really didn't change the design to be tool-less
Look! They made a knife 94% of knife owners will ever need or use it for. Me included!
You sound like you got some clam last night bro 😂
I just cant see the utility/use/purpose. That said, second kind of cool is there. It’s just not for me. lol 😢
So, let's get this straight: A knife that requires you to carry a bit and driver - an overblown problem that you won't really ever encounter. An extra 2mm of clip that's a bill - OMGTHEWORSTTHINGEVER YAAA YAAA OOOGA BOOGA HATEHATEHATE! /coniption fit Do I have that right?
Screw to remove the blade = nope
If you work and use your knife, f that screw. Real deal breaker
Meh
